Smash Fortress is a popular Team fortress 2 mod-gamemode. It uses custom-made maps and requires a plugin to play.

Smash Fortress is a private mod. The plugin isn’t available to the public. Because of this there are only roughly 4 servers in total running the mod. Smash Fortress was crated November, 2012.

So what is Smash Fortress?

Smash Fortress is a gamemode where players fight each other on floating-platform maps and attempt to knock each other off.

The goal of Smash Fortress is to be the team with the most knockouts in a round. To gain knockouts a player must knock an opponent off of the map and into the void.

Every round players are granted 3 lives. Once a player is push out of the map they die and lose a life. When their remaining lives total reaches 0, they no longer repspawn for the round.

Depending on the map, and number of players on the server rounds can end in 2 ways. 1 the most common way a round ends is that everyone on one team runs out of extra lives before the timer runs out and the other team is declared the winner or 2: the timer runs out before everyone on a team is defeated. If this situation arises the team with more remaining players and lives wins.

The main mechanic of Smash Fortress is the health system used. In Smash Fortress rather then health being depleted by receiving damage, player’s have an on-screen heath percentage number that will increase. This number acts as a multiplier of how much knockback a player will take. Basically players become easier and easier to push back the more damage they take. So players who have a high percentage will be more likely to be pushed off the map. This mechanic mimics the health system used in the videogame: Super Smash Brother and its sequels.

Smash Fortress maps are generally big and flat floating platforms in a void. Depending on the map, players can be considered in the out-of-bounds area and killed if they fall off the platforms. Some maps also kill players who are too high in the air and too far off the side of the map.

Many weapon and weapons stats are changed or outright removed in Smash Fortress. Some changes include the reduction to damage of explosive weapons and weapons that already have a knokback mechanic. Many weapons have smaller clips and less reserve ammunition as well. Ammunition and metal is regenerated over time in Smash Fortress.

Lastly Smash Fortress has a small powerup system. Pumpkin candy rains from the sky, (this is another node Super Smash Brothers.) When touched, the powerups grant short temporary buffs and debuffs such as uber, critical hits, being covered with jarate, etc.

And that’s basically Smash Fortress in a nutshell. A weird mish-mash of games and mechanics. A new and interesting spin on deathmatching opponents that yields some amazing entertaining results.

Private as in a new server owner can't run the mod. Anyone can join an existing server running it however.
