Enable Development mode
Rimworld Main Menu > Options and then click on "Development mode" to enable it.
Console text colors
White: Probably not important.

Yellow: You should probably check this out and/or contact the mod authors. It could be bad.

Red: Something very likely 'crashed internally' and this can cause problems for other mods as well. Please find out what mod is causing it and resolve this.
Basic debugging
  1. Disable ALL mods and only enable the Rimworld Core mod (and DLC if you have) and the mod you are troubleshooting.
  2. Try deleting your mod settings:
    1. Close Rimworld.
    2. On Windows goto C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld by Ludeon Studios\Config\
    3. Delete the xml files here (maybe make a backup first).
    4. Start Rimworld again.
  3. Contact the mod author and be post your error log on pastebin:
    1. On Windows goto: <Steam dir>\steamapps\common\RimWorld\RimWorldWin64_Data (note that the "RimWorldWin64_Data" folder might be slightly different named depending on your platform).
    2. Open "output_log.txt" (or whatever mod you are trying to 'reset'), and copy-paste it all.
    3. Goto https://pastebin.com/ and create a new paste.
    4. Copy the pastebin url and post it in the comments section of the Rimworld Workshop item.
    5. Wait for help.

I am just completely lost. I feel like an idiot whenever I reread the three easy steps. Is there someone I can jump on Discord to get help? (I apologize again for my incompetence)

Around 20-30 minutes after loading my save, I get a "message" sound blip and my UI disappears. Everything except the toggles at the bottom right and the colonist portraits disappear. The game still runs and I can move the camera with the mouse but not the keyboard, and I can't click on anything. How should I start troubleshooting this when I can't get to the debug log when it happens?

If you are done huffing your own farts and don't want to be even remotely useful then you could always just bugger off.
Anyways, nice little write up OP, always helps to have things like this pop up and makes the modding community larger / less daunting for new comers who want to mod their games.

Yeah... I'm not the "saintly patience" type.
When/if faced with someone who can't understand binary search I'd sooner end up giving up on teaching them then finding a way to do it.
(I also see it as uncourteous to assume that the person I'm trying to teach doesn't have the mental facilities required to learn. While I know that society as a whole can, sadly, be quite “comprehension challenged”, I still consider it insulting to automatically assume that of any given individual.)

So I don't have the patience it takes to teach what you define as newbies.
But I also don't have the experience it takes to teach what I'd call veterans. (not 100% sure that I myself even fit into that category)

Feel free to make a good guide for both newbies and veterans that covers everything. You can even copy stuff from this guide where needed, I don't care.

I made this guide primarily for players who can't even open the console, who don't understand the difference between red and white text in the console and they don't understand new versions/releases.

As a (now ex-)modder I sometimes got drowned with 'bug reports' slash 'complaints' about the mod not working while in most of those cases some configuration or another mod is causing it and they don't give me any info. So I put a link in my mods to this guide and the amount of false reports went down.

Experienced players will never need this guide for sure. I should maybe rename this guide's title though.
