Getting the Workshop Files
The first thing you have to do is subscribe to the skin or model you want to use.
For me, I picked this one, but you can pick any.

Note down the numbers after ?id= in the URL of the workshop item.
This is the ID of the workshop item.
In my case, this was 675102547.

Locating the files on your drive
Go to where you installed Steam, then navigate to
steamapps\workshop\content\250820
This is the folder for SteamVR workshop addons.

Find the subfolder with the same number as the ID you noted down from earlier.
If there is no folder with the ID make sure you downloaded the item correctly.

That folder should have another folder inside it that varies depending on which controller or device you are using a model for.

Because I'm editing a Vive controller, it's vr_controller_vive_1_5, but yours might be a bit different.
Backing Up the Old Files
Open a new explorer window, and navigate to your Steam directory again.
Once you do that, navigate to steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\rendermodels.

Backup the folder that has the same name as the one in the folder from earlier.

steamapps\workshop\content\250820\workshop ID here.

In my case it's vr_controller_vive_1_5.
Replacing the Skin or Model
Take the folder

steamapps\workshop\content\250820\workshop ID here\folder name
and paste it into

steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\rendermodels

Make sure to press Replace files.
Open SteamVR and you should now have the new skin or model.
Restore the backup
To restore the backup, just take the files from the backup folder and do the same thing, putting it in the steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\rendermodels folder.

If you have any problems, feel free to ask for help in the comments.

i would say that doesnt even make sense since it would be so easy to impliment options, but at the same time, good god people in every workshop are so shitty at tagging things properly.

Probably because of the many types of controllers that exist now, there would have to be a lot of different options in the workshop. I still think it would be better with the option, but at least it works somehow.

Base stations work the same way, just with either lh_basestation_vive or lh_basestation_valve_gen2 instead of vr_controller_vive_1_5 depending on if the basestation is gen 1 or gen 2

would there be a similar method to do base stations too? or would i be stuck with just controllers being skinned?

Well making your own controller skins is a lot harder than this, you have to take the model files and then put them into some sort of texture program, such as substance painter, and then you export the textures in a format steamvr can read and follow the steps to replace the skin/model. I'm not the best at explaining it but that should help a bit.
