Freeze Tag is a Team fortress 2 plugin. It can be played on any map as a stand-alone mod or coupled with many other mods. Unlike most mods presented in this series, Freeze Tag isn’t a full blown mod-gamemode. It’s a significantly game-changing mod but doesn’t affect standard rules and objectives.

The original Freeze Tag plugin was released October 2009.

So what is Freeze Tag?

Freeze Tag is a modification to the game rules where as rather then dyeing when a player’s health reaches 0 they are instead instead frozen in place.

When a player dies in a Freeze Tag server, rather then respawning they remain frozen-stuck at their death location and can not move. They may still be able to turn and taunt on some server. These frozen players have to be rescued by teammates. To save a frozen player, 1 or more players must stand within a radius of the player for a varying amount of time. Once the timer finishes the frozen player can continue playering form the same spot with full health.

If a frozen player is not rescued, eventually they will respawn normally. It is possible to unfreeze 2 or more players at the same time if they are close enough to have overlapping radiuses. Some servers illustrate the radius with a circle on the ground underneath frozen players. On these servers as a player is being unfrozen a second circle on the ground increases to show how much time remains before they thaw.

There are a few variants and oddities to Freeze Tag. Some servers display how much time is left before a frozen player is respawned on the hud. Some server require players shoot the frozen players to unfreeze them. And some servers have a weird mini round-humiliation event that’s triggered when everyone on one team is frozen.

Freeze Tag adds an interesting dynamic to Team Fortress 2 gameplay. Freeze Tag sort of acts as a surrogate for an injured teammate rescuing mechanic. Similar to mechanics that can be found on other shooter.

And that’s basically Freeze Tag in a nutshell. A fun modification to regular Team Fortress 2 gameplay. Just don’t attempt to lick the frozen players.
