Introduction

Mosby's Confederacy is a real-time strategy game that was published on November 19, 2008. It is one of only four titles created by developer Tilted Mill Entertainment, Inc that has achievements on the Steam gaming platform. (Unfortunately, Sim City: Societies does not have achievements... nor was it ever made available on Steam.) Tilted Mill seems to be defunct as of 2013 which is when updates ceased on their website. Mosby's Confederacy is one of the earliest games to have Steam achievements and yet only about a dozen completions are recorded to exist:

Mosby's Stat Page[astats.astats.nl]

from Tilted Mill's website:
"We also appreciate Don Quixote's spirit. When you spend all your time making games, you can't take yourself too seriously. Laughing at yourself is the only way to maintain your sanity. We make our fair share of mistakes, though we try hard to avoid them. But, at least we give it our heart and soul and when we are right, the experience is better for everyone."

In the spirit of that mission statement, Mosby's Confederacy is a buggy mess that crashes frequently and under mostly unknown circumstances. It is also a surprisingly endearing title worthy of the critical evaluation that apparently no one gave it.
Before You Start...
While Mosby's gameplay is enjoyable, and the overall campaign length is fairly short; the sheer volume of repetition in completing missions can make the experience incredibly tedious. For this reason, players will likely want to be efficient and complete the game in as few playthroughs as possible. (Ideally, one or two)

Through the course of the game, the player must perform the following actions on the global map to unlock achievements:
  • Upgrade 2 Armories to max level: 500 reputation and 1120 munitions.
  • Upgrade 2 Hospitals to max level: 340 reputation.
  • Upgrade Stables to have a limit of at least 35 horses: 200 reputation.
  • Increase Caches to have a limit of at least 500 munitions: 316 reputation.
  • Increase Support to 100% in all towns: 450+ reputation.
As you may have noticed, some achievements will take a heavy toll on your munitions and reputation. Coupled with a hard deadline of January 1865, these tasks may prove difficult to complete.
So, here is a small list of resource management tips compiled by the authors!
  • Start building armories and caches as soon as humanly possible!
  • Be sure to always have free space in your caches for future munition objectives.
  • Only accept missions to capture officers, munition wagons, or both. Horse missions can be very painful.
  • Reroll your missions: If you don't like the mission you were dealt, do the following:
Save the game -> Reload -> Check the new objectives.
An example of the same mission before loading:

    And after:

  • One particularly effective strategy to ration munitions is utilizing the Militiaman attribute (top branch on the attributes page). Unlocking this attribute also requires unlocking the entire related skill tree. When unlocked, the production of recruits will no longer require the use of munitions. Used in conjunction with other squad upgrades, these soldiers are incredibly deadly and completely free.

  • After obtaining enough munitions and reputation to satisfy any number of these achievements' requirements, a clever player might simply reload an autosave and reallocate their munitions and rep to complete a different objective.
*April or May 1864 are good dates to make such a savepoint.
  • The achievement for having 100% support in all towns, Lookout, is granted after the campaign's end, therefore it can be prioritized after completing most everything else in the game.

Historical Context

John S. Mosby earned the nickname "Grey Ghost" for his impressive hit-and-hide guerrilla tactics. Grey, because confederate uniforms are grey. Ghost because he was said to "appear and disappear at will." In 1863, Mosby was authorized by General Robert E. Lee to raise a guerrilla army in Northern Virginia — the region which would become known as the titular “Mosby’s Confederacy.”

Modeled after General Francis Marion's operations, Mosby’s band of motley irregulars became highly effective instruments of death — detested by The Union troops. General Robert E. Lee was once said to have remarked of his soldier, "I wish I had 100 men like Mosby."

Paradoxically, Mosby himself was despised by rank-and-file Confederates. He was educated. He never owned slaves. He was personally opposed to secession. He personally supported many aspects of reconstruction, and in his own writings he rejected The Lost Cause mythology that began appearing near-immediately at the close of the war.

After the South definitively, and quite pathetically, lost The American Civil War, Mosby spent some years as a fugitive. He was later given a pardon from his former enemy, who now happened to be a sitting US president — Ulysses S. Grant. This perception of an ill-gotten pardon granted by a despicable Northern aggressor, as well as Mosby's voiced support for "The Amnesty Act of 1872" unsurprisingly led to an escalating stream of targeted harassment. Ultimately the swarm of death threats from butt-hurt Southerners forced John S. Mosby to give up his law practice in Virginia and move his family to Washington, DC. Mosby reestablished himself in DC, becoming something of a bro to President Grant and an appointed diplomatic consul to Hong Kong.

Much of the real "Mosby's Confederacy" looks exactly as it did in 1860 and has been preserved as a heritage site by The Commonwealth of Virginia.
