How to import VMD motion file into DesktopMMD

OVREVIEW
.VMD file is MMD motion file,it can be easily imported into DesktopMMD, you just need import MMD .VMD motion file into Unity and make some small adjustments then you can export the motion file and import into DesktopMMD as Dance.



STEP
1. Download and Install Unity:https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive


2. Download the Unity Template Project "DMMD_Model_Convert_UnityProject" and unzip :

3. Run Unity and open the template project "DMMD_Model_Convert_UnityProject"


4. Drag and drop any MMD model file folder for excample "MMD - Kizuna Ai by Justdesuchan" into Unity project view


And the same, Drag and drop your .VMD motion file into the any folder of unity project view


5. Select the MMD model PMX file, and check the three checkbox at right-bottom,and click button "Agree"

Click the Left side folder to change to the .VMD file folder, and Drag and Drop .VMD file for excample "dance+lip(TDA)" into the right side "VMD" editor,click "Process" button
PS: you can drag and drop to add more than one .VMD file into here to batch convert more .VMD files one time.


6. wait for 1 minute ,unity will generate FBX file (Blue square icon),select this FBX file and drop down the AnimationType to select "Humanroid" at right side "Rig" tab. Click Apply button.


7.Click the "Configure" Button

Click the "Pose" button to drop down and select "Enfore T-Pos" at right-bottom , and click "Done" Button, wait for complete.


8. select this FBX file and expand it then you can see the AnimationClip file with the same name of .VMD file "dance+lip(TDA)",select it and press key "Ctrl + D" to clone a new AnimationClip with the same name:


9. Select the new file "dance+lip(TDA)" and check the boxes at right side of "RootTransformRotation" and "RootTransformsPostion" ,and set to "Orignal"
This step is very important, otherwise the dance will floating on air.


10. Click the main menu "Windows" >> "AssetBundle Browser" at the top of the window to open the "AssetBundle" window, switch to its "Configure" page, drag and drop the "dance+lip(TDA)" AnimationClip into "Configure" page:



11. switch to the "Build" page and click the "Build" button. See the generated model file in the "E:\ AB\" folder





12. Find the generated motion file in the path "E: \ AB",
Run DesktopMMD , open the "Manage Dance" in it's tray menu, then click "New Dance" at the top of the opened window, enter the dance name "BanHuSha" and then click "OK" button
Then select the AnimationClip file just exported in the dance editing window, and copy the contents of the readme.txt file in the VMD model folder to the "description", select a preview jpg image file, click OK, Done!





13. Now you can play this dance with model,You can also click "Submit to Steam Workshop" in the right-click menu to share it :)

Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial ! I had successfully transcode a couple of VMDs into motion files. There are some problems here and there, but the results are encouraging, I believe I will figure them out.
If you need to download the template, google it.
Also you need the exact same version of Unity Editor to work: 2018 3.8f1

It doesn't generate a motion file when I do this but it lets's me open it as a model. Anyone know how to fix this?

I try to convert it, In inspector was good, but when try to build the animation gone haywire....

which version of unity and model did you use? I used the Tda Summer Haku and Unity 2018 3.8f1, but still can't get it to work

ok i fixed it the model i was uisng was bad the version or unity was bad the fact i had to do it all in admin mode lots of issues but yea wow lol to much work

i followed your steps to the letter even previewed the motion data in unity but when i select the export in DesktopMMD it shows a stock animation instead of the file i pointed it to any ideas?
