[Intro]
Welcome to the guide! The second one to boot! I've seen some questions start popping up recently on how to change portraits and how to edit them. Here is a Quick Guide on how to do so.
[Known Bugs & Solutions]
  • Portraits Appearing Blank
  • Portraits Appearing misaligned
  • Potraits having characters partially in the frame

For the above issues, you may find that if you do not care about editing exactly how the portrait looks that you can simply use one of the below solutions to fix the issue and move on.

  • Unequip and Re-equip different armor pieces like hats, masks, and chest armor.
  • Visit a plastic surgeon in-game and change your character's stance, height, muscle mass etc.
  • Double-check any modded armor and see if removing anything resets the character portrait. An issue can arise where a modder updates the mesh and the character portrait gets pushed into an odd position because of this.
  • Save/Exit/Reload the game. Some changes may not apply until this happens.
[Editing Your Character Portrait Position]
Below you can find steps as listed by Vagrant in this discussion: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/233860/discussions/0/1692662484259291779/

  • Move the character you want to change into a squad by themselves.
  • Move the character you want to copy the portrait angle/direction into another squad by themselves.
  • Save the game and quit.

  • Open the FCS, click 'open any' at the top and head to your save folder
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kenshi\save
and then your save's platoon folder and open the "Nameless_[#].platoon" - # representing whatever number squad the character you wanted to copy the angle from (the one from step 2).

  • You'll notice there are a bunch of entries with just "0" and the last one will be the character's name.

  • Open the last "0" entry.
  • Scrolls down the list for Portrait Serial and then copy this value.
  • Open the "Nameless_[#].platoon" that has the character you want to change and then just open that last "0" entry and paste the new value into Portrait Serial.
  • Save and exit FCS.

I looked up the relationship between portrait orientation and portrait_serial and found that it seems to be determined by the following equation.

horizontal rotation = (uint32)portrait_serial % 500
vertical rotation = (uint32)portrait_serial * 125 % 31500

It is a bit tedious to calculate portrait_serial from the amount of horizontal and vertical rotation, so I made a web page to calculate portrait_serial, although it is very simple.

I'll release the source code so someone can make a more useful calculation page.

For those that can't seem to make it work, after you find your "save" folder in the kenshi directory in AppData/Local, you want to open whichever save you want to edit, then go to the "platoon" folder and look for the name of your squad. Note that for some reason if you've changed the name of the squad only once, the "save" folder will have the default name for your squad, aka "Nameless_0", so look for the "Nameless_0.platoon" file.
After locating it, in order to make things a bit simpler and less trial and error, after opening the file you want to edit, you want to click on "Changes" in the Forgotten Construct Set (FCS). This will open a new window that should show a bit more information instead of a bunch of zeroes.
You'll want to look for the "GAMESTATE_CHARACTER" bit, the amount will vary depending on how many characters you have in this squad, making it easier to locate which character you want to edit with less people.

Managed to make a decent Gorillo portrait serial, only tried it on the Great White Gorillo so far though.

@RediCon. the saves are in your user file path. User/user name/appdata/local/kenshi/save. Make a shortcut.

Has anyone played around with portraits for animals, I have some Gorillos because of UWE but some of them are literally blank because of bad alignment, was wondering if anyone had good portrait coordinates for oversized critters?
