Warcraft 3: Source, more commonly known as Warcraft 3 mod or War3Mod is a Team Fortress 2 server plugin. This mod has a long and complicated history behind its origin. Starting at the beginning, Blizzard Entertainment released a game called Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in July 2002 and then it’s explanation Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne in July 2003. In short the game was a class-based real-time strategy game. In January 2005 a plugin called War3ft or Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne came out for Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and Day of Defeat. Roughly December 2009 2 mods based off of War3ft were released. Warcraft 3: Source and Warcraft: Source. These 2 mods are basically the same thing; however Warcraft: Source doesn’t really have a presence in Team Fortress 2.

Warcraft 3: Source can be played on any map as a stand-alone mod or coupled with many other mods. Unlike most mods presented in this series, Warcraft 3: Source isn’t a full blown mod-gamemode. It’s a significantly game-changing mod that heavily impact gameplay but doesn’t change standard rules and objectives on maps.

Warcraft 3: Source is plugins for Team Fortress 2 but also for other source games. To name a few example: Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Garry’s mod.

In Team Fortress 2 alone, currently roughly 25 servers run Warcraft 3: Source.

So, now that all the back-story is taken care of what is Warcraft 3: Source?

Warcraft 3: Source is a plugin that adds Warcraft themed leveling, races and abilities to Team Fortress 2 gameplay.

In a Warcraft 3: Source server as a player plays they build up gold and experience. Experience is granted on kills and assists wile gold is drops by slain player and has to be manually picked up. Depending on the server text on the screen will indicate the gold and experience values the player has. Mouseing over other players may also reveal useful information.

What’s also always displayed on screen is the chat command war3menu. Most things in Warcraft 3: Source require the use of chat commands and navigating menus. For ease of use some sub menus can also be reached directly with chat commands.

The main focus of Warcraft 3: Source is the races system. Also referred to as classes or jobs the basic idea is to pick a race and then start levelling up their skills. Every race has a unique set few skills (also referred to as talents). Skills range from passives bonuses to things that have to activated manually. As a player levels their skills they gain the use of them in battle.

Every time the player gains a level and then dies a menu will display on their screen. From this menu the player can level up their skills. Levelling up skills will increase their potency or effectiveness in some way. There’s normally a maximum to how high a skill can be levelled.

Passive skills simply activate passively. Wile active skills have to be activated. There are 2 possible active skills: the ability and the ultimate. To use the ability players must put +ability in their console. To use the ultimate player must put +ultimate in their console. Since this is a tedious and time-consuming process that’s especially dangerous to perform in the middle of battle it’s recommended to bind a key to +ability and another for +ultimate. Not every race has an +ability skill but every race has an +ultimate skill.

In Warcraft 3: Source available races can vary from server to server. Some servers lock the use of races until the player reaches a certain level. Races (and skills) are themed after races from the Warcraft universe. …In case that wasn’t obvious.

Warcraft 3: Source also has a shop system. The point of gold is to buy items in the stop. Items are passives that grant small buffs such as movement speed and damage. Only 3 items can be held at once. When a player dies they must re-purchase their items. The entire system works in an interesting way as it’s a gamble on the players skill that they might live long and benefits for a much as possible off of their bough items.

And that’s basically Warcraft 3: Source in a nutshell. A thematic addition to gameplay that adds complexity. A sort of disjointed relic of the past that probably worked better with simpler gameplay then Team Fortress 2.

Thanks for reading. Don't forget to like/fav if you did.
Other Notes
  • So much backstory to this mod. Hopefully I didn't condense it too much.
  • The special effects are skills and passive skills. I believe the red lightning is reflected damage, the green lightning vortex thing is a healing skill and the blue nova is a frost nova. (just to name a few things)
  • At one point I say "hope" in chat. This is because I was cursed to taunt by a ward. (a debuff)
  • If you play war3mod and come back to life right after death at the same location with big yellow text on screen... It's due to the Phoenix talent. "Chance to revive your teammates that die."
  • All gold and experience, levels etcetera is server specific. So they remain on map change but don't remain if you change to a different server.
Find a Server
The best way to find a server running Warcraft 3: Source is to use a third-party online server browser and search by "server variable" with the keyword "a_war3_version." For ease of use simply click this link[www.gametracker.com] where I already typed out what's needed in this online server browser.
