This guide is over 5 years old, and was purely based off of an anime that is over 5 times as old. Please do not actually use this as a reference. I can't exactly drift, these tips were from Initial D!

You go at a speed that will get you into a sideways move. But NOT TOO FAST (see next section). You slow down by a little bit (depends on the driver you are idk), pull the handbrake and you jerk your car to the direction your drifting. Keep your concentration as you turn the wheel to the opposite direction of the way you are drifting the second you go to oversteer. DO NOT TURN THE WHEEL SUDDENLY!!! While drifting, accelerate enough to keep the car from losing control of the drift. DO NOT ACCELERATE TOO MUCH OR YOU WILL CRASH!!! Whenever you need to stop drifting, turn the wheel to the opposite of the way your facing, only have it sharper turn this time. Regain control of your car and GO!!!

If you have watched Initial D, you might have known why.

At the corner where the AE86 took the lead, it's right tires took the grip from the gutter, therefore giving Takumi an advantage of being able to turn without having to drift much. This gave the car more speed.
