If you're opening 2.9x files in say 2.8x I think you'll be ok, but you're trying to take a model from 2.80 or above back to 2.79, you can't open that blend file in the older version. The newer files aren't compatible with pre 2.80 versions.
To get a model from 2.8x and above into 2.7x, you have to append the model objects from the blend file into 2.7x and earlier versions. You'll may also have to fix materials and textures from nodes.
