Introduction
Medieval mode is personally one of my most favorite things to do in Team Fortress 2. You have a gravelpit-style CP map, everyone with limited projectiles, leaving everyone madly whacking everyone else upside the head with melee weapons. The sheer chaos of it...is what makes it so fun. I have played SO MUCH of it that I sometimes forget that there are still guns in TF2.
What is Medieval Mode?
Medieval mode is where both RED and BLU teams are restricted from using modern-day weapons, such as guns or sentries or rockets. Instead, players are limited to melee weapons and anything that may have been usable circa 10th century A.D. Also, any player killed will drop a small health pack which, if you’re not using Pyrovision, will look like a ham shank. Right now, there is only one map in Team Fortress 2 that has these restrictions, cp_degrootkeep.
What is DeGroot Keep?
DeGroot Keep is a gravelpit style CP map (capture point A and B to gain access to point C) That is set in medieval times. It consists of a large castle in the middle (which is where RED spawns), a small town to the left of it, and a large gorge to it’s right. In the town is control point A, while control point B is in between the castle and the large gorge. When control point A and B are captured by BLU, the front gate of the castle opens up to reveal control point C. Point C will remain available for a minimum of 60 seconds. The gate will remain open until RED has claimed back point C. when that happens, BLU must re-capture point A and B to start the process all over again.
What weapons can I use in Medieval Mode?
Medieval Mode doesn’t want to leave you without any weapons, so you can use ANY melee weapon in the game, even if it has a futuristic theme to it like the Gunslinger or Third Degree. Primary and secondary weapons, however, are an entirely different story.

Most primary weapons (except four) have been removed from Medieval mode because nobody way back then would have ever thought of such kinds of weaponry. For example, do you think they would have pistols or rocket launchers or sniper rifles or miniguns back in the Dark Ages? That being said, most classes are rather limited on what items they can or cannot use. The only four primary weapons that are allowed are:

The Huntsman (of course, they had bows and arrows!)
Ali Baba’s Wee Booties (not too hard to invent)
and The Bootlegger (same case as the booties)
The Crusader’s Crossbow (for some odd reason)

Most secondary weapons have been removed, too. any sort of pistol, shotgun, or anything that looks like a gun has been taken out (with one tiny exception).

The Flying Guillotine
Bonk! Atomic Punch
Crit-a-Cola
Mad Milk
Buff Banner
Gunboats (but really, why would you need them if there’s no rocket launcher to use?)
Batallion’s Backup
Concherer
Mantreads
Chargin’ Targe
Splendid Screen
Sandvich/Robo-Sandvich
Dalokohs Bar/Fishcake
Buffalo Steak Sandvich
Razorback
Darwin’s Danger Shield
Cozy Camper
Any and all cloaking devices for the Spy

What was that one tiny exception, you might ask? Notice that Jarate fails to make it on the list above. The only reason it was removed, I believe, is to keep Medieval sniper from being too overpowered, considering a Jarate-Bushwaka combo can be pretty deadly even in NORMAL Team Fortress 2 matches. No pee-in-a-jar for you, Mr. Mundy.
What are some Item combinations I should use in Medieval Mode?
Ohhh, boy. There are quite a few, so bear with me here. Keep in mind that these are my personal favorite combinations, and you don’t HAVE to use one of these. These are just good ideas.

Scout

Sandman and Flying Guillotine
A little overlooked thing about the Flying Guillotine is that it critically hits enemies who are stunned (Bonked). That being said, a good idea would be to hit someone with the Sandman’s baseball, switch to the Guillotine, and throw that at them. It will instantly kill most classes, not including a heavy (duhhh). Only downside is that you’ll be left with 110 health in all.

Mad Milk and Candy Cane
This one I like to call “The MediScout.” The Mad Milk heals you as you or anyone on your team hit someone covered in it, and the Candy Cane makes anyone you kill drop an extra health pack. This is probably my most favorite loadout in Medieval mode.

Sun-on-a-Stick and Sharpened Volcano Fragment
Equip the Sun-on-a-Stick and team up with a pyro equipped with the Sharpened Volcano Fragment to deal insane damage to other players that the pyro has set on fire.

Soldier

Backpack Item and Half-Zatouichi
This combo can be pretty helpful, considering it’s not like you’re going to build up rage without getting a kill, right? Once you’ve built up enough rage, you’ll probably be able to sheath your Zatoichi and blow your backpack item’s horn to help your team out.

Mantreads
It’s not a very good idea, but if you jump from the top of the front wall (where the gate is) and land on somebody, you’ll deal some nice amounts of damage to them.

Pain Train
The only things in Medieval mode that qualify as bullets are the Huntsman arrows and Crusader's Crossbow bolts. The Double capture rate is worth it, though.

Concherer and Disciplinary Action
If speed is what you want, whip the crap out of your friends and, if that gets too boring, blow into your Concherer.

Pyro

Pyro doesn’t have ANY secondary weapons that he can use in Medieval mode, so be careful when playing as this class.

Powerjack
The extra health upon kill and the speed boost are pretty useful, but the extra damage downside can be a pain.

Backscratcher
Since there are no dispensers, Medi Guns, or Payload carts in Medieval Mode, this weapon really doesn’t have a downside.

Sun-on-a-Stick and Sharpened Volcano Fragment
Equip the Sharpened Volcano Fragment and team up with a scout equipped with the Sun-on-a-stick to set people on fire and leave the scout to decimate them.

Demoman

If nobody has told you already, Medieval Mode practically REVOLVES around Demoman. Equipping the Wee Booties/Bootlegger, a shield, and a sword will make you the internet-famous Demoknight, perfect for Medieval Mode.

Demoknight
Shoes, Shield, and a sword melee for starters. The best shield to use in Medieval mode would probably be the Splendid Screen, since there’s only one usable explosive and very few things that can set you ablaze in Medieval mode. The charge impact damage can also act as a second weapon.

Persian Persuader
Quite possibly one of the best swords to use in Medieval mode, since ammo crates are now health crates to you. It’s not like you’re gonna need ammo if you don’t have anything that requires it, am I right?

Eyelander/Horseless Headless Horsemann’s Headtaker/Nessie’s Nine Iron
You can ONLY use melee weapons in Medieval mode anyway, so why not? Besides, with the Boots equipped, the health reduction equals out on the Demoknight.

Pain Train
see above, under Soldier

Ullapool Caber
Suicide Bomber Mode: Activate.
The Ullapool Caber can and will deal 165 damage to your target upon detonation. That will instantly kill 70% of the classes in the game! Besides, what could be more fun than blowing up someone’s face?

Half-Zatoichi
It’s not like you actually have any other weapons to switch to…

Claidheamh Mòr
I wouldn’t advise it, but if you truly want the extra charge duration, go right ahead.

Heavy

Buffalo Steak Sandvich and K.G.B
This one is fairly popular. Before running into battle, eat your Buffalo Steak Sandvich. this will grant you temporary minicrits and speed, so you can get in your first kill rather quickly. After that, you just mow down everyone with your crit boost.

Dalokohs Bar
Health can sometimes be difficult to find in Medieval Mode, so the extra 50 health may make that less of an issue for you.

Eviction Notice
With all the chaos and madness going on with melee fights, you’re not gonna know if you’re actually hitting anyone on the opposing team 50% of the time. The eviction notice will help you with this, if getting in a one-two punch is your concern.

Holiday punch
Land ONE critical hit on anyone, and they’re screwed. Period.

Engineer

As you might guess, sentries, dispensers, and teleporters are nowhere to be found in Medieval Mode. That being said, going as an engineer really isn’t a good idea. At all. But if you insist on going as the intelligent little hard-hat, here’s a few weapons you could use.

Gunslinger
Extra health, predictable critical hits, and a badass looking hand. Enough said.

Southern Hospitality
Like I said before, very few times will you actually be lit on fire, so the extra 20% fire damage shouldn’t be much of a problem. The bleeding on hit, however, can help you quite a bit in tracking down spies.

Eureka Effect
If you’re running low on health, just make a quick teleport back to spawn. And, since there are no buildings TO haul, there really isn’t a downside to this wrench.

Medic

Crusader’s Crossbow
Since this is the ONLY usable primary weapon for Medic, You should ALWAYS make sure you have this item with you in Medieval Mode. No matter what melee you choose, ALWAYS have this on you.

The Amputator
If you’re looking to heal a large group of people in a short amount of time, this is going to be your best option. The -20% damage shouldn’t be a huge issue, unless you plan on going Battle Medic in Medieval Mode.

The Solemn Vow
...But if you DO plan on going battle medic and damage IS on your priority list, then break out good ol’ Hippocrates for a fight.

Sniper

Huntsman
Like I mentioned with the Medic’s Crusader’s Crossbow, you’ll ALWAYS want to have this.

Razorback and Tribalman’s Shiv
If Spies in TF2 have made you paranoid in the past, then this loadout would be a good idea. If a spy backstabs you, whack him with the shiv so everyone can then know that he’s a spy, even after disguising.

Darwin’s Danger Shield
There’s only one explosive in Medieval mode, and very few people actually use it. Go right ahead and give yourself 25 extra health!

Shahanshah
Like I mentioned before, Health can be scarce in Medieval Mode, so you might find yourself spamming your E key pretty often. If you happen to get to so low of health, This will help you out a lot.

Spy

You can basically equip any knife-and-cloak combination and it end up being good. Some are slightly better, however. My personal favorites:

Dead Ringer and Your Eternal Reward
The Y.E.R is made for eliminating large groups of players in mere seconds. Fortunately, people usually tend to be IN large groups in Medieval Mode. Also, if someone happens to find out you’re a spy, you can just dead ringer them and take them out over and over again.

Dead Ringer and Conniver’s Kunai
You’ll be relying on backstabs a lot to kill off your enemies, so why not get some extra health off of it? Besides, the Dead Ringer will seriously help you in conserving what little health you have.
What are some good tactics I could use on DeGroot Keep?
  • As a sniper, make sure to note where the three torches are on the map. If you walk up to one with your Huntsman active, it will light the tip of the arrow on fire so that if you hit someone with the arrow, it will set them ablaze.
  • On defense, make note that you can get a good look at all three control points from the roof. this allows quick access to defend any and all three control points.
  • As a Demoknight on offense, you can charge at the large rock outside of BLU’s spawn to propel yourself to the top of the Keep. Be careful, however, as you’re bound to be seen and attacked by RED.
Closing Statement
Thank you for reading this guide. please make sure to rate it and give it a thumbs up (or a thumbs down if you didn't like it, nobody is making you vote up). Now if you'll excuse me, I have some people I need to go decapitate.

I would suggest tide turner for shield as the full turn control is OP as heck.

Nice guide! I'm pretty sure that charge impact is also counted as bullet damage, though. So if the Demomen on the other team use screens instead of targes...

Also pretty sure that a Neon Annihalator Pyro paired with a Mad Milk Scout can score critical hits. Mad Milk Scouts can also use their milk to extinguish themselves or their teammates if on fire.

What about the Warrior's Spirit? If you equip it with the sandwich, you can quickly kill your enemy with lots of damage and heal up before capping the main point, or use the steak to quickly wipe out lone defenders.

In addition to what I've said above, the explosion vulnerability the Candy Cane gives you is more negligible than previously thought, as a caber blast instantly kills the Scout anyway.

Hope my info and opinions helped!
