Preface
Just wanna start out with a quick disclaimer: I haven't updated this thing in about a year. The date is currently November 24th 2021, and I've long since abandoned this. As far as I know, most of the information in this guide is still up to date. Take what you read here with a grain of salt, but likely things haven't changed since writing this.
Introduction
War Dust is basically battlefield in VR. Just the really scuffed version. It's advertised as 32 v 32 but uh, there are always 24 bots on each side and there's a max of 39 players or bots on each side. So really 24 - 39 v 24 - 39. So y'know just think of it as scuffed battlefield in VR. The objective of the only game mode, is to drain the enemies tickets. Each side starts with 300 by default and capturing "points" will drain the enemies' tickets slowly and killing an enemy will drain 1 ticket.

I made this guide because War Dust is not the most new player friendly game. There are many tricks that you kind of have to know to survive in War Dust. For example: most people cant even figure out how to parachute and parachuting is undoubtedly the most important method of movement in War Dust!

But fear not! Your friendly neighborhood Loukylor is here to save the day. I have compiled all the tips, tricks and facts I could think of (and also found in the code) in this very guide! I plan to update and edit this guide whenever something new is found or if I make a mistake. Also, many of the things in this guide don't have any official name or term (because most of them are glitches). So I'm just going to use the terms that I hear often or just make one up.

Also this thing is unfinished asf and i dont plan on finishing. if u have any questions regarding the game check out the discord or comment on my profile.
Basic Movement
This section, is the MOST important section in this guide. If you don't wanna read this whole guide, then just read this section. Also make sure you use the sitting movement style, unless you want to your squats in for the day.

1. Diagonal Running
In many VR games, War Dust included, simply running diagonally maybe 10 or 20 degrees will make you move slightly faster. About 10% in War Dust. Simple but useful!

2. Climbing/Grabbing
In War Dust you can climb by simply holding the button that pro movement uses (B or Y on Oculus *need to list other platforms here!*) on anything flat. You can do window sills, roofs, it is even how to climb into helicopters, and yes, you can even grab the ground. But we'll get to that later. Then you simply lift yourself up onto whatever you're holding on to.
*insert gif of climbing on various things here*
If you wanna get a little jump at the top then simply lift yourself up with a little gusto to gain some momentum. Then just let go of whatever button pro movement uses on your headset once you've extended your arm all the way.
*insert gif of jumping from climbing*
You may also notice that if crouch you can fit into openings way smaller than your body. A good rule of thumb to check if you can fit is if your head can fit through the opening.
*insert gif of opening you can and cant fit through*
3. Parachuting
Parachuting is by far the fastest way to outside of a vehicle and is integral to know if you wanna play War Dust. To parachute, find a ledge about 6ft (2ish meters) off the ground then simply walk off. Once you're off, if you've jumped off a ledge that's tall enough, then you should see a little gif telling you that you can parachute. If you don't then find a taller ledge.

Then put both your hands behind your shoulders (as if to scratch your back), pull both triggers (not the grab buttons) and pull down. Then your parachute should pop out! Keep in mind the further you pull down the slower you'll fall.
*insert gif of just parachuting*
Now if you simply climb onto a ledge 8 or 9 ft off the ground and walk off then the game will give you a little boost that allows you to parachute further.
*insert gif of parachuting with a jump at the beginnig*
Now you may realize. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I'm super easy to shoot down while I'm parachuting. Worry not fair reader, for you can shoot as you parachute. Simply let go of one trigger while keeping the other pressed, grab your gun (which you should have put away before you parachuted) and shoot! Now you can either shoot one or two handed.
*gif of shooting one handed with your parachute*
But keep in mind, if you shoot two handed then you'll fall much quicker because you'll have to raise your hands (remember the lower you pull the slower you fall).
*gif of shooting two handed*
Also parachuting for any amount of time will reset fall damage. Say you're falling from the top of the map, you don't need to parachute the entire way down. Just wait till you're almost at the ground, pull your chute for just a blink of an eye and bam! You'll be alive!
*gif of fall damage cancelling with a parachute*
4. Riding on Vehicles
This isn't really basic movement, but more of an essential thing to know. All vehicles only have one seat. The drivers seat. If you want to ride on a vehicle, simply stand on top of them or grab onto them. This can be done with any vehicle, from the quad bike to the jet. Just keep in mind you may need to grab onto whatever you're riding to make sure it doesn't kick you off.
*Insert gif of riding on quad bike and one on jet*
Vehicles won't give you their momentum if you fall off. This means that as soon as you walk off, you'll stop moving. Also, you don't take damage from getting hit from a vehicle. You'll only take damage from a vehicle if you get hit with one of their weapons, or are driving it when it explodes.
Glitches
As you may know, War Dust has tons of glitches that kind of hinder gameplay. This section is just dedicated to the more prominent glitches and ways to work around them.

1. Random Deaths from Fall Damage
You may notice sometimes that when you're climbing ladders or trying to get through a window and stopping half-way that the icon telling you you can parachute pops up. Then, seemingly randomly, once you hit the ground, you die randomly!
*insert gif of it happening here*
Now, this is just the game thinking you're falling. But in reality, you're just stuck on some random clipping. Then once you get unstuck on the clipping, the games give you tons of fall damage, which is why you die.

To prevent this just pull your chute as soon as this happens and try to get unstuck on whatever you're stuck on. Remember, parachuting resets fall damage.

2. Being Unable to Grab Things While on Vehicles
You may notice when you're riding on a vehicles, especially one that's moving fast, you cant grab anything or use your gun. Now, the reason of this glitch is somewhat technical and I'm far too lazy explain. But to get around it, simply slowly move your hand away from whatever you're trying to grab in the direction that you're moving (or opposite to the direction I cant remember), then once you get the right distance away you should be able to grab on to whatever you're trying to grab onto.
Gif of working around it here

3. Flying Tanks
Sometimes vehicles just fly into the air. Especially tanks and jeeps. Why does it happen? Who knows! Is it entertaining. Yes!
flying tank here

4. Being Unable to Grab Things at All
This is a very rare glitch that Seems to happen when you try to drive a vehicles, but for some reason cant. So for example: pressing the button to drive a vehicle at the same time as someone else. This will cause the game to think you're driving, but in reality you're not. Also, this is just me speculating. It has only happened to me once so I'll need to consult more people to confirm. The only way to fix this is for you to get killed somehow.
If anyone has a clip of this it would be greatly appreciated

5. Avenging/Saving a Squad Mate
According to the code, you should get 50 XP when you kill someone who had just killed one of your squad mates or when you kill someone who had shot your squad mate in the last 4 seconds but didn't kill them, but this seems bugged.
Driving and Using Vehicles
Guns
1. Damage Calculation
Before we start though, I'd like to go over how damage is calculated. In the code the function works like this First the code checks if whatever hit you was a gun or not. If not then it will do a given amount of damage to you. How much depends on what hit you. If it is true, then it will take the highest number between 10 and the damage of the weapon minus the product between the weapon's air penetration and distance between you and the gunman; max(10, weapon_damage - (weapon_air_penetration distance_between_you_and_gunman)). Then all of that is multiplied by something referred to as the damageFactor, but if its bigger than 2, it becomes 2, or smaller than 0.5, it becomes 0.5.

2. The M4
The M4 is the first rifle you get in the assault class. To many players, veteran or not, (not me tho I'm too cool) it is the best gun for them. It is well rounded: low recoil, decent ranged damage, decent close range damage and is the easiest to unlock attachments for. Most guns in this game are based off preference so if you don't like this gun, whatever! Just use the one that you want.

3. The AK47
The AK47 is the second rifle you get in the assault class. It is unlocked at level 5 and should take around 3-10 games to unlock (yes I know that is a big range but it is accurate). It has the highest DPS of any rifle in assault class being able to do 50 damage per shot max. This is my favorite as it is geared towards close combat because of it's high recoil and bad ranged damage. But, I am quite the shot myself and can hit targets at a fair distance with it.

4. The M16
This gun is the opposite of the AK47. It has a relatively low base damage doing 40 (?) maybe 35 damage max. But, it does tons of damage at range and has virtually no recoil. Couple that with the huge mag and you have a ranged machine. Although, it does take quite some time to unlock. It is unlocked at level 30 which will take around 50-200 games (again big range but it is accurate).
Weapon Attachments Equippables
This section will contain info about all the weapon attachments.

1. Barrel Attachments
There are 2 barrel attachments in War Dust. The silencer and flash suppressor. Now the silencer will reduce the sound from the gun to only be heard from 20 units (its 1000 units by default) or closer and the flash suppressor will... reduce the flash. But they will both also reduce damage, by 3% with the flash suppressor and 10% with the silencer.

2. Ammunition Types
There are 3 ammunition types used in each gun. The first is hollow point, which deals 10% more damage. That's it from what I can tell. The high accuracy will force your gun to be semi-auto and deal more damage. As for the last type, armor penetrating, I have no clue. I think it increases rate of fire and maybe damage? I have to do more tests.
The Classes
This section is has all the level up information and general uses for each of the classes. Also the reason I'm using github to store the table is because of steam's character limit.

1. The Assault Class
A table of level up rewards can be found here[github.com].

This class is most useful when you need to take enemies out from a distance or to do a lot of damage. But it isn't the best at surviving, especially in close quarters, because of its lack of healing. Despite that, it is the class that most people use because of its very high damage and accuracy weapons. To best use this class, either get a good vantage point of the capture point you want to take or hole yourself up in a secure place in the point if you're defending.

2. The Engineer Class
A table of level up rewards can be found here[github.com].

3. The Support Class
A table of level up rewards can be found here[github.com].

4. The Scout Class
A table of level up rewards can be found here[github.com].
EXP Dealing and Leveling Classes
This section is dedicated to how XP works in this game. If you don't know, XP is required to level up your classes. The higher leveled up they are the more stuff you unlock for them.

1. Level Progression
The XP required to pass a specific level is the same across all classes and the algorithm used to calculate XP for each level works like this:

Is the level level 0?
If so then the XP is 4000.
If not then we raise 1.08 to the power of the level. Then we round it to the nearest whole number. Then we multiply that by 8000 and add 1000 times the level.

I've made a small little calculator that can be found here[github.com]. Just simply download it and open the HTML file.

2. Capturing a Point
Once you start capturing a point, that is when it isn't contested, you'll immediately get 20 XP. Then you'll get 20 more XP every 20% you capture. Then once the point is captured, you'll get 500 + 100 multiplied by the number of times you got 20 XP. That means you'll get 600 XP minimum and 1500 maximum.

3. Healing Friends
If you didn't know, while using the support class, you can shove health packs into the faces of friendlies to heal them. In doing so, you'll get the same amount XP as health they recovered.

4. Hitting Enemies
Whenever you hit an enemy, you'll get however much damage you did to them XP. That is, unless you killed them with that hit. In that case you'll get 200 XP. That means you can get 299 XP max from an enemy.

5. Respawning on your squad
When you respawn on a squad mate or a squad mate respawns on you, you and our squad mate get 10 XP.

6. Avenging/Saving Squad Mates
In the code, there is code that checks if the last player you killed had killed one of your squad mates as their last kill; if you avenge your squad mate. If this is true then you should get 50 XP and the message "Squad revenge 50", but, I have never seen this message a single time. I'm just going to assume it's a bug, so don't expect to get this XP or message in-game. There is also a similar check that checks if the person you just killed had shot, but not killed, one of your squad mates in the last 4 seconds. If the check is true, then you should 50 XP and the message, "Squad save 50", but I've never seen this one either.

Capture Points
This section is dedicated to how capture points work. But, that doesn't include how XP is dealt with when capturing a point. Go see "XP Dealing and Leveling Classes" point number 2 if that's what you're looking for.

1. Capture Speed
The percent per second with which a point is captured is defined by a value in the code called captureSpeed and its value depends on the value of a variable simply named num which is calculated by the number of attackers on a point - defenders.
  • num equals 0: 0% per second
  • num equals 1: 10% per second
  • num equals 2: 16.3% per second
  • num equals 3: 20% per second
  • num equals 4: 22.6% per second
  • num equals 5: 24.6% per second
  • num equals 6: 26.3% per second
  • num equals 7: 27.7% per second
  • num equals 8: 28.9% per second
  • num equals 9 or more: 30% per second
That means, for example, if there were 2 attackers and 1 defender, the capture speed would be 10% per second and if there were 2 attackers and 2 defenders the capture speed would be 0. Note that the numbers listed are not rounded and are the ones listed in the code.

2. Capture State
The state of a capture point is defined by a value called captureState. It is a number between -1 and 1. -1 meaning that the enemy holds the point and 1 meaning your team holds the point. If the number is between 0.5 and -0.5 (0.5 > captureState > -0.5) then the point is neutral and neither team can spawn or drain the enemy teams tickets.

3. Respawning
There are 2 values that define where you can respawn in a point: spawnRadius and disputedSpawnRadius. The game calculates where you spawn by first finding a random point in a unit circle. Then we set the x of that point as the x of the spawn location, and take the y of the point and set it as the z of the spawn location. Then we multiply and x and z of the spawn location by spawnRadius, except when there is an enemy at the point you're trying to spawn at. In that case, disputedSpawnRadius is used. Then the game will determine your y position by drawing a line from the top of the point (defined by maxSpawnHeight in the code), and spawning you at the point it hits. If the line never hits anything though, it will just spawn you 100 units in the air.
Squads
I'm going to be honest, I cant figure out specifically who joins the squad, why squads change during the round, and also how to get into a specific squad even with the code.

From my experience though, who gets into a squad seems mostly random and it seems that whenever a new player joins the squads are redone which is what results in the random change of squad during the round. Take this with a grain of salt though, because I really don't know for sure.
Bots
1. List of Bot Names
Just a list of bot names which can be found here[github.com].
Advanced Movement
1. Ground Jumping
This is a fairly advanced technique that allows you to sort of jump without walking off a ledge beforehand. This is useful for when you cant quite reach something and need to get on it. To perform it, simply crouch and grab onto the ground. Then you can just push off the ground while still crouching, or you can stand up and then push off. Just keep in mind if you're too far away from the ground you'll let go of the ground.

Footnotes
There is a War Dust discord, you can join here[discord.gg]. There you can find many people who know even more than I do and also events that we host. Please come join, were all here to have a great time and I promise were not mean. Mostly.

Also, almost all the info in the guide can be found in the actual code of the game, or was from my own experience. If there is any inaccuracies then it is likely from me misinterpreting the code.

ive practiced with smokes for about day now............ loukylor you right you can only pretty much under arm throw grenades to catch them in frame. you see im right handed and you know how people like me would throw.....by peggin tha damn thing but i realised its easier to just underarm with left hand cause i use a gun stock with my right arm LOL
loukylor  [author] 9 Jun, 2021 @ 12:25pm
So grenades are basically underhand = far, overhand = less far and then just practice. At least that was the consensus back when I played

Doh! I came here for the grenades! ;) thanks for the write-up though.
