Creating liveries for QuickMods
By Franks
This guide explains how to convert an old legacy QuickMod livery into a "legacy livery" using the new modding system, which can then be uploaded to the Steam Workshop, included in groups and packaged inside save files!

Understanding what a legacy QuickMod livery is
Rolling Line has grown a lot over the last 2+ years, and so has the modding system.
"QuickMods" were originally a hasty solution to the communities request for modding trains with custom models.
This system was never actually meant to be a full modding system, just a quick solution (hence the name "QuickMods").

The term "QuickMod liveries" refers to the idea of making duplicate copies of QuickMods and replacing the textures to create different liveries.
Since there was no official livery system for QuickMods, this was the only way to create liveries.

Recently Rolling Line got an update which allows you to "convert" old QuickMods to a new system (which can be uploaded to the Steam Workshop, included in groups, packaged in save files, etc).

You can read more about this new system here:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2245149260

Along with this new system, you can also now create "legacy liveries".

A Legacy Livery is essentially a QuickMod which only contains textures (no 3D models) and instead relies on another mod for its models (the "base model" which the livery is being made for). This means you can upload a "legacy livery" to the workshop without needing to upload a duplicate copy of the whole mod.

This means that players need to download the "base mod" which your livery uses in order to view your livery.
Creating a Legacy Livery
In order to create a "legacy livery" you need two things:
- a mod (already converted to the new system) which you want to make a livery for
- a legacy QuickMod which contains the textures you want to replace

If you already have a livery ready to go (e.g. if you made one as a QuickMod before this update) then you are already set up! Just make sure it is in the "QuickMod" folder and move on to the next section of this guide.

Alternatively, if you want to make a new livery based on an existing mod you downloaded off the Steam Workshop, then follow these steps:

Firstly, open the modding manager and set the category to "Legacy QuickMods"
The click on the mod you want to make a livery of:

Next, choose the "Create livery" option:

Then give your livery a name:

Then click "Done"
This will automatically create a new sub-folder in the "QuickMods" folder and copy over the necessary data to make a livery.
The new folder will open automatically:

Before the livery is ready you need to change one quick thing.
Open the mod.txt and change the "Name" value to something new, preferably the same as the folder you just created:

Save the edited text file, then you are free to start editing the image files as you please.
In this example, I simply changed the colors from orange to yellow:

And you're done!
You can now move on to the next section of the guide and start setting up your livery in-game as a new mod.

Setting up the livery as a mod
Reminder, before you create a "legacy livery" you need two things:
- a mod (already converted to the new system) which you want to make a livery for
- a legacy QuickMod which contains the textures you want to replace

For this example, I am going to use the "Chesapeake and Ohio L1 Hudsons" by Dennis the Can

Firstly, we need the base mod (which in this case is the orange Hudson)
and the livery to replace (the Yellow Hudson)

Here is how these files should be organized:

Notice how the Orange Hudson is already a converted mod (in the "mods" folder) meanwhile the Yellow Hudson is still a classic QuickMod (in the "QuickMods" folder)

If you go in-game you should be able to see the Orange Hudson in the "Legacy QuickMods" list:

and the Yellow Hudson in the old "QuickMdods" drawer:

The next step is to go into the modding manager and set the category to "Legacy Livery" and the click "add new" to create a new mod:

From here you need to set two main important things:
- The "Base mod" (the mod you are creating the livery for)
- The QuickMod which contains the livery

First we are going to set the "Mod to replace":

Choose the Orange Hudson from the list, the click "done":

Next we will set the QuickMod which contains the livery. Simply select the Yellow Hudson from the list. Remember you can click on the mods name to spawn it in for taking thumbnails!

At this stage you can set things like tags and a thumbnail too.
Once you are ready, simply click "Save" and your new livery will show up in the list:

And you're done!

This livery will now also show up alongside other QuickMods inside the "mod" drawers too:

The new "legacy livery" you have created can be treated just like any other mod, so it can be uploaded to the Steam Workshop, packaged inside save files, included in groups, etc.

This was helpful, but however when I wanted to do it again I spawned in the livery I made to take pictures, and it was a base with simple blocks and text on what was supposed to be the body that says "MISSING QUICKMOD". Idk how this happened.

I realized that something like this after actually paying attention to the texture file upon trying it again. Upon seeing this: 1) I feel stupid for not seeing it earlier. 2)I was relieved that it was something simple. Thanks for the help!:steamhappy:

That depends on the model used for the QuickMod
The 3D model importer used for QuickMods has some mesh inverting going on so some models may have inverted textures (this is up to the mod creator)
