My actual preference out of all of the science weapons is the Mind-Control Ray. You concentrate on the baddest thing on the field, and it happily ties up some of the goons while your companions pick things off. It actually makes one companion quest ending too easy - the one thing you have to fight to complete it simply sits there while everyone pummels it.

Thanks for sharing, just finished my first playthrough and focusing more on the science weapons was definitely what I was wanting to do for the next go around. Good guide since you find so many of them at low level as you mentioned.
