ATU have multiple subtypes, here are the currently available options.

EDN - Features domestic androids
FAUX - Features military and goverment units
HARP - Features industrial mechanoids
Off-brand - Features a wide assortment of sometimes strange combinations.

What makes ATU different from other robots?
Well, you have access to cybernetics, sucks to be a robot without access to them right?
You are immune to diseases and poison damage.
You bleed oil!
I believe you should be immune to some psychic stuff but that requires more testing.
Based on manufacturer and subtype, you start with different cybernetics.
