Gary the Bastiladon (obsolete)

Description
A version of this mod is now available for Total War: Warhammer 3. This means that this mod will no longer be maintained.




This mod will no longer be maintained and will not be updated for Total War: Warhammer 3. I'm only leaving it in the Steam Workshop so you can finish your campaigns. If you're going to start a new campaign, please use the new Gary the Bastiladon 2 mod.




If you are playing as any of the High Elf factions (*sigh*, yes, even Tyrion) and if you have an Archmage with a unit slot open, then a very curious bastiladon might come find you.

Big change: if you don't see Gary, please make sure your archmage has less than 20 units and you've waited 3 full turns. (The random chance of him joining means that he won't always go to the first elf if you're in a multiplayer campaign with 2 high elf factions.)

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE CARE OF GARY. That means:

  1. Keep Gary alive. If Gary dies, he will come back after a random cooldown (3 to 13 turns on average), assuming you have at least one archmage who has a unit slot open. If you think that cooldown is too long, then don't let him die!
  2. Keep Gary away from the Sword of Khaine. You have been warned.


COMPATIBILITY

This mod is NOT compatible with the new mod. You must deactivate this mod before activating the other one.

This is partially save-game compatible: you can activate the mod anytime, but do not de-activate it afterwards unless you're starting a new campaign!

This is a script mod. It should be compatible with everything, however if you ask "Is it compatible with X?" the answer is "I have not tested it with X, therefore I do not know."

@Chapter Serf - There are a total of 4 Lizardmen missions in Mortal Empires. Which missions did you complete?

@Gricken - No, because High Elves do not get any technology or skills related to buffing Lizardmen. The quest items (Book of Gary, Tail Club of Khaine) are the only ways to buff him.

I completed the quest chain (got it from Tehenouin) and I wasn't given the option to upgrade Gary.

Awesome, thank you for confirming how that mechanic works! Now that my empire has grown considerably, I'll recruit an Archmage of Life just to take extra good care of him.

@GnomeGnuts - Alarielle isn't his archmage friend, so they don't get the Garydian ability.

The unique ability only shows up for B) if Gary is in any Archmage's army at the start of your turn.

This mod is amazing, I just unlocked the bonus quest! Thank you for your time creating this, it's cute, polished, and charming.

Something I noticed, I transferred Gary to Alarielle's army, and doing so made him lose his Garydian bonus ability. I didn't mind as I couldn't really afford the Archmage's upkeep (got her as part of a confederation, then Gary spawned in her army right away), so I didn't see if transferring him back restored the ability or not. So maybe he only gets the unique ability if he either:

A) Stays in the original Archmage's army
or
B) Remains in any Archmage's army
or
C) He loses the ability if transferred to any other army

... or it's one of my other mods messing up poor Gary because I did not test any of this in a control setting. As such, not expecting any troubleshooting or a fix, just passing along an observation with some speculation :D

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I'm praying the March of Chaos campaign in Total War: Warhammer 3 has at least one Asur faction, otherwise Gary won't make an appearance until the Immortal Empires campaign is ready.
