The base gather rates of food and wood, as you know, are .84 and .5 respectively. So 1.68 food is gathered as quickly as 1 wood. arguments can be made about walking time, but good herding can alleviate this, especially for the first 8 or so minutes of the game, which are the most crucial. I'd argue that any age 1 or age 2 shipment should use 1.68 food per 1 wood.
Wood might be even more valuable, since this huge difference in collection rate usually drives people to get good upgrades quickly, and wood upgrades very late. Once steel traps are in, 1 wood is worth about 2 food.
