Reach Part 2: Chapter 3
Image above shows where the Hunter and Killer Main Mission is located when talking to Okudera.
  • After escaping with Baba you will find yourself waking up in a snowy village, this is where you will be introduced to the hunting side story for Saejima where you will be able to hunt wild animals for cash and food, alongside helping out the villagers and all their needs! This guidebook will lead you to becoming a successful hunter.

Menu
Image above shows The Mountain Menu.
  • The menu tells you what Main Mission you will be heading into next, what weapon & snow gear you'll be using, how many hunting huts you have repaired, how many trap locations you have interacted with, how many of every Jizo statues you have prayed at, what hunter skills you have unlocked and what contract missions you have available if you decide to go on a hunt. The equipment confirmation option will open up a menu where you can remove or add items to your hunting inventory with the help of your item box, not all kinds of items can be taken with you and it's mostly limited to what you can acquire from your hunts or the village itself, it's best to keep the amount of items you bring to a minimum to make as much space as possible for any loot you gather along the way.

The play area
Image above shows a map of The Mountain
  • The mountain is the main hunting ground and mission area, this is where you will get your hunting done so your attention should be on learning the map to make your moves much more efficient. The first obstacle of the mountain comes as soon as you enter and that is the temperature, for every second you stay on the mountain you will lose health so its important you keep enough health supplies for extended hunts, don't worry about getting too lost or going too far out as the mountain itself isn't very large and you will quickly get a grasp of the area itself without any issues.

Hunting
  • The gameplay loop is hunting so you best get good at it! Landing headshots is the main way to racking up harvest and money. Crouching reduces noise and can make shots a little easier to land, always shoot the deer with antlers on it's head first as they are the only one who can attack you apart from bears. You will hear music when you are physically close to animals you can hunt so it can help you set yourself up. Laying traps is not worth it unless it's for catching Martens and that's where you best get a couple of cage traps. When hunting you always have two shots before the reload so always make the first one count as the second shot is most of the time a miss unless it's a bear getting ready to attack or a smaller animal like fox or rabbit who takes one body shot to defeat and often runs in circles before escaping. The longer you hold down your aim the closer will you get to your rifle's crosshair if you have a hard time seeing the head of the animal. Your companions will not help you hunt, instead it's always like an escort mission. Make sure to use the evasion move if a deer with antlers on it's head is very close to attack you (melee range) and patiently wait for bears to charge at you before shooting at it's head (Most consistent method).

Traps
  • Traps are mostly not worth it unless you're hunting Martens where you'll use the cage trap. Traps does make life easier for catching smaller animals but it's not where you will get the most value when compared to hunting deer or bear. The good thing is that you will recover your traps after you pick them up with or without a catch, so you can always 'reload' your traps or put them elsewhere without having to obtain new traps over and over again. To purchase traps, go to the trader located at the road leading towards the village, you can also obtain traps by praying at Jizo statues.

Result screen
Image above shows the Result Screen that appears when leaving The Mountain.
  • The result screen tells you how long you were up on the mountain, how many animals you harvested from and how many plants you gathered.
( Skills & Cold Wear

What Is This?
  • Skills and Cold Wear is essentially a boost to help you in your hunting journey, but unlike abilities you'd unlock from the menu, these skills are unlocked *only* from finishing up the Main Missions which isn't too exciting but atleast you'll always become a better hunter the more you progress. This section will tell you what they do and when you unlock them.

Hunting The Animals
  • Hunting each animal is sometimes involving special strategies or awareness in order to avoid danger or for a more clean hunt, knowing what you're up against is always a good thing!

    - HeadShots is the amount of shots they can take to the head before dying.
    - BodyShots is the amount of shots they can sustain if you're not landing a clean HeadShot.
    - Rewards is the rewards you get for looting their corpse.
    - Traps is the traps that can catch these animals.
    - Attacks is the Yes/No if they can attack you when you're spotted during a hunt.
    - Strategy is specifically for animals that enter attack mode.

( Traps

Traps
"Gray map icon is an available Trap Site, Red is Broken Traps, Green is Functional Traps."
  • Traps are in general not worth your time unless it's for catching Marten but if you do decide to set traps then there are many trap sites throughout the mountain, one in every part of the mountain except the bridge and the entry point of the mountain. Every trap is set like every other, there is no difference in any of the traps apart from what they can catch. You can always recover the trap after it's used so it's wise to reset it on the same area you caught an animal. Traps can break but this is fortunately not a common occurance, if it does happen however, don't bother with a repair kit since you should always be able to set a completely fresh and healthy trap with how much money you make from hunting the bigger animals anyway. There is no trap for medium or large sized animal so these traps are simply not worth the trouble.

( Hunting Huts

Hunting Hut Benefits
Image above shows the Hunting Hut menu screen.
  • Hunting Huts will not only give you max ammo but it will also allow you to get inside your item box and regenerate health at a abnormal rate, much faster than a regular hideout would. It even skips ahead and quickly jumps your health to full when it's close to the end of your healthbar. Hunting Huts are one of the most useful things for your journey, always go inside one of them when you are low on anything to quickly get back in the game. It's perfect for saving up on health supplies that you can sell or use elsewhere later. It's wise to have all hunting huts up and going so you have less distance to travel to one.

Repairing Hunting Huts
  • To repair a Hunting Hut you will need a Hut Repair Kit which can only be obtained from the Trader at the village. It's 10,000¥ per Hunting Hut which is a really cheap price considering what you'll get out of it. In total you only need 40,000¥ to afford repairing every broken down Hunting Hut on the mountain which is a steal. Once you have a Hunting Hut repair kit simply walk up to a discovered Hunting Hut wreckage and interact with it, just make sure to have a Hunting Hut repair kit in your Snow Gear inventory first, you can do this from the menu before the mountain.

( Tips & Tricks

Stand & Shoot
  • The hunting isn't very deep in the sense that you can actually run around without servere consequences, you can in fact stand and shoot very accurately even if you have the earliest of rifles so don't bother losing your momentum by crouching and shooting, just follow the middle rifle hair. Run into any area and shoot as they rarely manage to escape in time anyway.

Look Sensitivity
  • Go to Menu > Options > Gameplay > then go down in the Gameplay option to find the mouse and controller sensitivity, increase this to be able to hit running targets without working yourself to the bone trying to catch up to them.

Reload Canceling
  • You can use your evade button while in reloading animation if you decided to reload at a bad time. You can also cancel the reload animation as soon as the shells are in to save up some time.

Ammo Saving Through Melee
  • Use your rifle melee button at an elevating ground level on any smaller animals passing by to save up ammo to use on larger creatures instead, depends on circumstances of course.

Exploring The Mountain
  • The mountain has a variety of different animals and plants, even some good spots for traps, hunting huts and Jizo statues. In this section we take a deeper look at the map itself and what it has to offer to anyone who decides to explore the mountain.

The Mountain on the Map
  • This is what the entirety of The Mountain looks like on our map.
( The Bridge
The Other Side
The image above shows the Before & After of the bridge being repaired.
  • In order to cross the bridge you will need to complete Main Mission "Principles", that's when the bridge will get patched up and you'll be able to cross it to the other side. You need to cross the bridge for the last two Trap Sites, to hunt Yama-oroshi and to find more Gold Stags.
( Hunting Hut Locations

Hunting Hut Locations
The image above shows all four Hunting Hut locations on the map.
  • There is 4 hunting huts on the mountain in set locations that you can discover, however you are required to repair these in order to make it count towards the Hunting Hut Achievement.

1/4 (Hunting Hut #1)
  • You will find this one on Main Mission 2.

2/4 (Hunting Hut #2)
  • You will walk past this one on Main Mission 2.

3/4 (Hunting Hut #3)

( Trap Sites Locations

Image above showing every Trap Site on the map (Gray, Red, Green icons)

Trap Sites
  • There are 36 trap sites all across the mountain that you can spring traps on with no limitation on what type of trap you're allowed to set. You can only progress your Trap Site achievement if you interact with a Trap Site even if you don't have a Trap to put there; it will still count towards your progression and the Trap Site will be marked on your map.

"Empty Trap Site (White), Active Trap (Orange), Trap Activated (Blue)"

Trap Site Indicators
  • There are different indicators that inform you about what Trap is set at which Trap Site and if the Trap was activated or is still waiting for action. When walking up to a Trap Site you can see which color it emits. If the color is red-orange then the Trap is still active but if the color is white-blue then the Trap has been activated with or without a catch. If you set different traps at different sites you'll also be able to see icons on the map for these traps. The circle being snare trap, the teeth being leglock trap and the cage being just that, a cage trap.

(Trap Sites #35-36)

( Jizo Statues Locations

Image above shows what a Jizo Statue looks like.

Jizo Statues
  • The Jizo stone statues are hard to miss and you must have seen atleast one or two by accident. Either way, there are 12 of these statues and you can only interact with them once the Trader at the village tells you about them. Interacting with these statues will give you good luck and a free hunting trap depending on which of the statues you're interacting with.

Statue resting by the right-side wall.

11/12 (Jizo Statue #11)
  • From the Tenth Jizo Statue you turn left and continue the path ahead out the cave and follow it upwards while hugging the wall on the right and you should stumble upon the eleventh Jizo Statue.

Main Missions
  • Main Missions is the 'Main Story' of the Hunter and Killer Side Story and is the most valuable missions to do as you'll gain access to stuff you'd be unable to get anywhere else in the Village or the game in general. This is where you get rifles, access across the bridge, free-entry and so much more.

Practice Setting Traps With Okudera
  • Simply follow the river until you find a marked glowing spot called a "Trap Site", simply follow Okudera's instructions and set traps in every Trap Site within the small area. Then wait around for an animal to get trapped (Will change the trap's color to blue) then harvest what you caught.

Image above shows Yama-oroshi trying to charge at Okudera.

Fighting Yama-Oroshi
  • After the trap practice you will encounter Yama-Oroshi the demon bear, simply keep shooting at it until it pounces Okudera in order to progress the story, if you're a good shot then it might take longer for it to attack Okudera since Yama-Oroshi gets stunned for a short amount of time when landing headshots at the right time. You can even practice your bear skills here by not shooting at Yama-Oroshi when it's walking left and right, instead wait for it to prepare a charge attack then land a headshot there for a guaranteed hit without the bear being able to dodge it. Eventually it will be too aggressive to shoot so it will attack Okudera regardless which will then finish this mission.

Reward
1x Simple Cold Wear
Snowman Skill
2,000 Experience Points
( White Darkness

Find Footprints
  • Follow the river until you find the next clearing where you'll find footprints in the snow, follow them all the way until you find Kikachi.

Kikachi's Location
  • This is where Kikachi is on the map. Make sure to have one healing item with you, anything works even mushrooms & Japanese Parsley so make sure to pick them up on your way there. After talking with Kikachi, Saejima will wait out the blizzard to keep Kikachi safe, then you'll finish the mission when you wake back up at the village.

Reward

  • This is where Narumi is on the map.

Reward

x1 Bear Bait

Image above shows the first sightings of Bear Tracks.

Find Bear Tracks
  • Simply go along the river as usual until you reach the first clearing to, again, find tracks. This time it's bear tracks because you're out hunting for Bear Bile, so this will serve as your test to see if you can take on a bear or not.

Image above shows a bear walking on two feet.

Fighting A Bear
  • After following the tracks and your map marker you will reach the bear. Simply land a clean headshot on it, if the bear survives or you miss the head then phase two is not very difficult at all. Simply aim at the bear and wait for it to stop moving left and right (defensive state) and wait for it to prepare a charge attack (offensive state), that's when you're guaranteed to hit the bear with your shot because it's no longer focused on evading any shots and will simply be going head-first into a bullet. Simply defeat the bear, harvest it and head back to the village.

Reward
2,000 Experience Points
( Hubris

Image above shows what Narumi's bear bait looks like.

Take Back All The Bait
  • Simply follow your mini-map to locate every single bear bait and take it back (luckily won't fill up your inventory), you will have to be observant of bears roaming around now so be ready on your gun as not only is it a present threat but it's also very valuable to harvest a bear and hunting them's not difficult at all. Refer to the "Hunting Animals (Large)" section if you don't know how to deal with bears.

Image above shows Narumi's footprints in the snow.

Finding Narumi
  • After you clear all the bear bait, simply follow the path to the top-most hunting hut located North-West of the map to find Narumi who will then be attacked by Yama-oroshi. If you don't know where this is then keep heading north until you find footsteps that Saejima will point out.

Image above shows Saejima running from Yama-oroshi.

Escaping Yama-oroshi
  • After Narumi gets attacked by Yama-oroshi, it's your turn. Simply run all the way back to the mountain entrance path to finish this mission. Yama-oroshi won't be able to stop you if you just keep your momentum straight-and-steady. You shouldn't have to worry about any bears either but if you have enough distance between you and Yama-oroshi then you can snatch a few bears along the way as you try to escape as you will encounter a couple of other bears on your way back. Simply head down the mountain and leave to finish this mission.

Reward
Stealth Skill
2,000 Experience Points
( Pride's Toll

Image above shows Narumi's footprints in the snow and drops of blood.

Finding Narumi
  • Simply follow the blood trail leading towards the ice cave to find Narumi

Image above shows the injured Narumi waiting for Saejima to escort him to the village.

Escorting Narumi
  • Narumi is heavily injured at 1 HP so make sure to be extremely careful, be observant of deer and bears to get back safely. You will need to escort him all the way down the mountain where you first entered the map. You can lose track of each other if you stray off too far from each other so make sure to keep close pace with Narumi's. The best advice for this is why simply holding down your walk button as you will always walk slow enough for Narumi to always be able to catch up so you can simply walk all the way to the exit if you really want to. And don't forget to use your follower options to tell Narumi to stay put or follow you when you fail to defeat a bear or want to check on ahead without risking the life of Narumi since he will stay very very close to you if you let him catch up. Simply head down the mountain safely and you will then finish this mission.

Reward
x1 Vertical Double Special
2,000 Experience Points
( Tag the Beast

Image above sees Saejima aiming at Yama-oroshi

Locate Yama-oroshi
  • Simply follow your map marker to find Yama-oroshi

Image above shows Yama-oroshi walking on two feet.

Shooting The Belly
  • In order to land your transmitter shot on Yama-oroshi's belly you will need to first set him in attack mode, to do this you only need to shoot it with one or more bullets or get it's attention, then simply evade their attacks with the evasion move or wiggle around and wait for Yama-oroshi to stand on two feet, when Yama-oroshi stands on two feet you'll be able to shoot it's belly and don't worry about missing as it will not only happen again but it will take a while before it goes down on all fours again.

Image above shows Saejima running from Yama-oroshi, again.

Escape!
  • Once you manage to shoot the belly with a transmitter shot you simply head back from where you came and escape back to the village to finish this mission.

Reward
Deadeye Skill
2,000 Experience Points
( Okudera's Escort

Follow The Markers
  • Simply follow every marker on your map to try and trace Yama-oroshi's whereabouts.
After having gone to every marker on the map you'll finish the mission.

Reward
2,000 Experience Points
( Ride the Snowmobile

There are no obstacles here apart from straight trees and boulder walls.

Reward
2,000 Experience Points
( Principles

Find Yamo-oroshi
  • Simply follow the path straight ahead to find Yama-oroshi.

Image above shows Yama-oroshi in his defensive state.

Fighting Yama-oroshi
  • Shoot Yama-oroshi multiple times with your rifle and wait for him to prepare a charge attack for more guaranteed headshots. Shoot him and evade attacks until you enter phase three, it takes 5 headshots to enter phase three.

Image above shows unarmed Saejima getting ready to brawl.

Brawling Yama-oroshi
  • After you have shot Yama-oroshi enough times you'll trigger the next phase where you enter physical combat. You have already fought Yama-oroshi in a physical fight so you probably already know what to do here but if you don't then good enough to do a full rush combo then the third charged finisher and repeat this combo until you beat it since the charged finisher attacks can stun him for a very short time which gives you enough window to either do another full combo or give yourself some space. Another method is to simply wait his attacks out and then do very short attacks or singular heavy attacks to simply poke him to death. Once you defeat Yama-oroshi you'll grant an achievement and be done with every Main Mission!

Reward
Mastery Skill
5,000 Experience Points

What Is This?
  • Contract Missions is the Hunter and Killer's variant of Substories, these do not count as Substories and only count for your Hunter and Killer completion. You can access these Contract Missions by simply interacting with the people of the village. This part of the guide will tell you exactly what is requested by the village beforehand and will also tell you how to fullfill their wishes.
( Get Marten Pelts

To Start The Contract Mission
  • You will need to talk with the moustache guy by the fishing spot to start this contract.

What They Request
x3 Marten Pelts

Harvest from Marten, image above shows Marten locations.

How To:
  • Purchase Cage Traps from the trader and set them out on trap sites on the mountain then wait for them to catch (hopefully) a marten. If you're not one for traps then martens can be found out in the wild too but note that they are the smallest animal so they can be tricky to spot which is why it's good to have the mini-map Spotter skill first so you'll know where to look within the area. Catch three martens and harvest them to obtain three marten pelts then head back to the village and back to the moustache man by the fishing spot to grab your reward after handing him the three marten pelts.

Reward

( Hunter's Test

To Start The Contract Mission
  • Ask to "Demonstrate Rifle Skills" at Okudera after finishing all Main Missions.

Request:
Demonstrate your rifle skills to Okudera.

A Game Of Speed
  • You're given 4 shots at 3 Deer passing by, if you think you have to drop them all you're right, but if you think of dropping them when they all have spawned, you're mistaken. The way you win is incredibly simple, you drop each Deer before the next Deer can spawn. The way you do this is by checking your mini-map to know when they spawn then aim in that direction and shoot at their head *as soon* as you see it pop out even a tiny bit, shoot it through the trees, the bushes, just make sure to drop them by headshot as soon as their head stick out. You will quickly learn that the Deer spawn on a timer one by one so if you drop the first Deer really quickly then the next Deer won't even know of your presence and will walk equally as slow and 'laxed like any other un-alerted Deer. Reload your rifle after the second deer but you shouldn't be in any rush to reload at all if you pulled it off clean.

Quick repetition; Spot Deer on mini-map, aim in Deer direction, headshot first deer as soon as they show their head without hesitation or a particularly clear sight so that the next Deer spawns un-alerted, repeat.

This can be done with any rifle that drops a Deer in one headshot, therefore; all of them

The Shot (In Picture)
  • This is where the deer can be shot without alerting the next deer that spawns, it is difficult to make it out in the picture and is easier to see it in motion; but this is where the deer's head was peeking out and is pretty much where you shoot each of them for a perfect outcome. Check the mini-map in the image for positional reference. You have to drop them as soon as you can.

Reward

You can fairly easy do the hunting challenge where you have to kill 3 deer in 4 shots by shooting while standing and headshot them right after they have spawned in. the second deer dosen't spawn right away when the first does so you have a little time to aim for the first without startling the second deer.
