Strategy for better Highscores (30k+)!
By Catatafish
Hello together,

I want to share my personal strategy for success in this game.

First of all, the following points are just general rules. And sometimes rules have to be broken. But following these rules, you will be fine most of the time. There is no "perfect round" in this game, since you rely on RNG, respectively getting the right tiles at the right moment. So don't be afraid to use your own mind and follow a different strategy.

The Start
Your decisions in early game will have a big impact on the overall score and the geometry of your map. So don't be afraid to restart the game if the first few tiles don't match well. Especially trains and rivers can be very annoying in early game.

I personally aim for empty borders since the starting tile is always empty on all edges. I try to build wood in one direction, cropfields in the other and the first city in another direction as well. This will lead you to have plenty of choices for matching up perfect tiles.
Perfect Tiles
You should ALWAYS aim for perfect tiles, espacially in the beginning of the game. Placing Tiles perfect grants huge bonusses in terms of extra tiles on your stack and points for highscores.
In the early game I use to delay quest fullfillments, just to not break the perfect-chain. Trust me, it will reward you later on.

Over time you will have a few open tiles surrounded by 6 other tiles. So there is just ONE fitting. Sometimes they just won't appear. In this case, you can go for 4-5 matching borders to complete a quest or get some extra cards. As I said, rules have to be broken sometimes.

Addition: Try the "Tower V" achievement. You have to coninously place matching tiles without a single non-perfect. Adds much more fun to the game.
Cities and Cropfields
I recommend to build several cities and cropfields (2-4) during your game, depending on the Quests you get. I usually build one big city/cropfield and a few smaller ones nearby to connect them later on if necessary. I highly recommend to NOT close groups before you gather at least 2-3 flags. But this really depends on the size of the group. It's hard to find a general rule for this.

Addition: Have in mind to not let too much borders open. So you can close them, if needed, without wasting much tiles.
Trees
Just build ONE SINGLE WOOD. Very Important! Woods are different to other tiles. They always have "X+"-Quests and never an exact amount of trees to plant. So just build a single, big wood. Of course, there are flags appearing over time, but it's just not worth until late game to close your wood.

Addition: Have in mind to not let too much borders open. So you can close them, if needed, without wasting much tiles.
Trains & Rivers
I use to build trains and rivers as far apart from the rest of the tiles as possible. This helps to avoid difficult situations. Over time I build up 2-3 rivers/trains, depending on the Quests i get. Of course, don't place them too far apart to connect later for big-number-Quests.
Late Game
With the strategy above, you will usually score 15-20k without any problems. But if you are running out of tiles focus on the following:

Close up open borders as perfect as possible. Cities and Cropfields first. Every group should have 2-3+ flags until then and the rewards will help you to survive a little longer. Don't accept Quests you will not be able to complete anymore. For example 100+ city if you already closed your big ones. Wait for better Quests.

Also: Close as many perfect tiles as possible. You don't have to be that precise anymore. The outer Regions of you Map most likely won't get much bigger. So it's okay to get just a few good borders for reward. The outer tiles can be non-perfect, it's a worthy sacrify.
Finishing
If you just have <10 tiles and no other options for more: CLOSE YOUR WOOD. It will have 4-6+ flags until then and will grant you a big bonus stack. Use these tiles to (again) close remaining perfect tiles and do maybe a few last missions. Usually you will still have train and river Quests open. Most of your cities, crops and of course the wood will be closed, so go for those Quests if possible.
Leave Feedback!
That's basically it. I really underestimated the effect of perfect placing, until i tried the Tower achievements. I recommend you to try it by yourself.

Let me know if you have any additions or questions!

Thanks for reading!

Regarding the train tracks, I found it helpful to build small sections and aim to connect them. That way the game will still throw you those quests with low completion thresholds, giving you a steady stream of easy early game tiles. With the right placements, it's possible to weave a track back and forth across a smaller area rather than having it divide your map.

A big one for me was planning for mixed terrain types on tiles. As the game progresses, you will find tiles that just don't match up perfectly because of their mixed terrain. Leaving areas where you can join different types of terrain with a single placement will be really helpful in going for those high scores!

Try not to box yourself in with too many different terrain types centering on a single spot or two spots - it's really hard to draw a tile that will fit a spot that has four different terrain types that surround it, for example. And there are some types of mixed terrain that the game just doesn't generate!

I can definitetly attest to this sound advice. I'm a new player and on my second game got a 30k score basically using the same methods (before I read the guide). I think I could have gotten more easily if I hadn't closed my big forest and field, I soon had big quests for those types which I could no longer complete. My advice would be if you have a really big forest or field, hang onto it unless you are getting really low on tiles, chances are that a big quest or two will pop up and you'll not have to do much more to complete them!

@M0butu Thanks for detailed review! I have to admit a few things should be refactored in this guide, but I probably won't find the time to do so.

I wrote this thread a few weeks after launch. Nearly no one had 100k+ at this point. There are better strategies out there, surely.

But this one helped me to get at least more than 10-15k. A solid 30k+ is almost guarenteed here, but it's not a good strat to go towards 100k

Sadly I must disagree on one point:
I do NOT enlarge a big group further unless there is an open quest. Instead I build several smaller sets or fill in gaps, just in case a quest drops in with a small target number. I absolutely DO NOT build them to connect them later. On the contrary, it's on the other side of the map!

If you have a quest, concentrate on them if your tile fits. Nothing is more detrimental than tugging open quests along.

Avoid octopus tentacle rivers or railroad, rather build multiple short lines and keep it compact.
Don't close rails or rivers if it's not a perfect match. Simply place it somewhere else.

If you build clusters, have always a one-, two-, three-, and maybe even foursided gap of your clusteritem open. This way you can manage all kinds of tiles the game throws at you.

P.S.: I have 37k highscore and only Puzzler VII achievement missing. My current problem is perfecting rivers and trains.

I have a tip for perfects: focus on field placement. Most tiles have 2-3 fields so you can make a gap with 3-5 tiles' fields encircling an empty space (emphasis on 3). Whenever you get a tile with 3 fields look for a gap to fit into. Secondly, the mission "PUZZLER" in the corner is good to have since you can get definitive confirmation that all sides are matching each time you lay a piece.

@Sweet Blue I usually go for one big river/ocean. But that sometimes this seems to not be the best solution in late game...

I had my own strategy in mind. Then I checked yours to see if it matched! Spot on! and I learned a few things too. Thanks. What's your advice for rivers? Start a few different ones or try to make an ocean?

oh ok so just what makes "sense"? got it, wonderful game glad i got it.
Catatafish  [author] 1 Dec, 2021 @ 6:38am
@Thanatos... Since it's all rng, it's hard to find general statements. I alwayss look what i got and where it fits best without breaking the perfect streak. But feel free to find more rules that work :)
