Just for the record, there is no official modding support for this game and this is all unofficial.

For the purposes of the guide I will be using a Girls und Panzer overhaul as an example.

To start you will need to access the game's files, which you can do by right clicking on Panzer Knights in your Steam library, then go to the "Manage" tab and then left click on "Browse Local Files" as shown here:

What you can do (Art/Pictures) 你能够做什么(人物立绘、图片)
For now there are 3 things that I have found out that we can do and those are -

Editing the character portraits, which are found in the "art" folder of which you can view the contents of here:

The folders "character_I", "character_s" and "wingman" all contain character pictures as you can see in this example picture:

In this folder specifically, as in "character_I", are all of the full portraits of the characters which have the dimensions of 400x720, meaning a width of 400 pixels and height of 720 pixels and are in the format of "png" with a transparent or alpha channel background.

Note: Simply renaming a picture from .jpg for example to .png will NOT work. You need to properly convert a picture from another picture type if it's not already png in order for the game to read it, otherwise you will just get a blank and empty picture.

In the "character_s" folder are present all versions of the regular portraits but in a square 128x128 pixel format meant for the character selection screen and others, all of the above what was said for the pictures in the "character_I" folder section apply here as well about the picture type and so forth.

The same as the above also applies for the pictures in the "wingman" folder, these are the character pictures of your friendly tanks in the platoon.

There is one last folder called "character eyes" that seems to contain an open and closed versions of the eyes of the character portrait. These are I'm assuming used for the bubble texts to create the illusion of the characters opening and closing their eyes so they don't look like robots staring into your soul all of the time, or something.

As mentioned at the start of the guide some Girls und Panzer modifications will be used as examples of what can be done, at least with the picture files.

What you can do (Audio/Voices) 你能做什么(音频/语音)
This is the part where we talk about the sounds or character voices of the game that just got recently added in the 1.0 full release of the game so this is an entirely new feature not present in the earlier "Early Access" versions of the game.

The Audio is, obviously, contained in the "audio" folder of the game as seen here:

What you see is 14 folders of character voice lines saved in .ogg format.

They are in Japanese and I am unsure if there will be English, German or any other voice lines in the future

Each folder corresponds to the character name in the game files, for example "FA" means Female A, as in the first female character which had a portrait name of "f001l" in the above art/pictures section and the name "Stefanie Winter" in the actual game, how to change the names of characters will be presented in the next section.

Moving on with the audio/voices of the characters, there's other "F" character voice folders going all the way up to the letter "H", as in "FB", "FC", "FD" and so forth which stand for the other female characters in the game.

The letter "M" stands for male, as in "MA", "MB" and so on which are obviously the male characters. Again the folders go all the way to the letter "H" which means there are 7 female and 7 male character audio folders, so 14 in total as specified before.

Each folder contains around 90 something voice lines but some characters have a bit less than others, especially the males or at least that's what I've noticed.

They are saying things like "Tank", "Reloaded" and other stuff like that.

So once again, the file format or type is .ogg, meaning that in order for you to replace these with your own custom files, let's say with a voice file from the Girls und Panzer or Company of Heroes voice packs from War Thunder, if they are mp3 or wav you will need to properly convert them to .ogg as with the picture files and not just rename the file extensions because that will simply not work.

For this section we will need to go back a couple of folders to here -

These files are in the .scv format which seem to be Microsoft Excel type files which I guess you can also open with Openoffice and other such free table reading alternatives if you don't own or have the Microsoft Office suite.

Inside the Localization.scv file you will find the character names:

As you can see there's Stefanie Winter, the first female character's name which I mentioned in the previous audio section.

Note: There are 2 references here, the first one is "Panzer Vor" from Girls und Panzer made by the developers and the other is the last name of Stefanie is also the family name of the 2 main characters from the German WW2 series "Generation War", or "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" in German.

Anyway, moving on.

More or I would say most text featured in the game is included here which also includes the character backgrounds:

Plus other things such as the character bonuses and so on and so forth, you get the idea. I am assuming that all of these are editable so an (almost) complete overhaul of the game is, at least in theory, possible by replacing all of the pictures, audio and text.

A note from the developer -





As you can see the 2 pictures pertain to what I said about certain features of opening the files in excel and something like notepad++, in my case I can only edit the files in notepad++ because if I do so in excel they become jumbled.

The other thing is that in order to get the full name of a character, again for example Stefanie Winter, it needs to be written like this - "Stefanie Winter" so it will all show up and not just Stefanie Winter because only Winter will show.
How to actually make a mod 那么如何制作一个mod呢
We will be using our Girls und Panzer mod as an example, which you can get in the Mod downloads section.

What was done here was basically all of the above mentioned things, as in replacing the art (character portraits), audio (character voices) and text (character names and descriptions).

Of course the art and text parts were the easiest, you just have to find the pictures that you want to use, make sure they are in .png format with a transparent background and adjust them according to the vanilla pictures and also rename them, for the text you just write in the table files.

The audio files are however where things become a bit tricky because as mentioned in it's dedicated section, the game uses around 90 something sound files for each character so as you might imagine converting them all to .ogg and then renaming all of them individually might take some time and demotivate you from doing anything.

Here is where my batch conversation and batch renaming methods come into play.

I like many people don't really like downloading random software from unknown sites on the internet but sadly I couldn't find any online services that allow me to batch convert around a hundred sound files from one format to another so we will have to make do with this free software, but on the bright side you at least don't need to install anything. Just extract the program's zip file and it will work.

After you've extracted the program open it up, then go to File, Add, Audio Files(s) and then select all of the sound files you wish to convert which you can by either left click and pressing ctrl to select them individually or just pressing ctrl and A to select all of them at once in the folder.

The files should then be loaded and you can go to the Select encoder which is at the bottom right side of the program and then scroll in the list until you see Ogg Vorbis Encoder.

And then you should press the little green circle at the top with the triangle pointing to the right that says Start Encoding Process and the files are then going to be converted over to the .ogg file format which the game engine reads in your Music folder.

I would provide pictures, gifs or even a video but for some reason I cannot record or screen capture anything in the program sadly so you will need to just follow my instructions here without much visual guidance unfortunately.

So after you've converted the audio files over to .ogg, if of course they weren't already in that format, you will need to also rename them.

This is a bit more complex than with the conversation because it will also involve using 2 other programs, Microsoft Excel (or alternatively other table making and editing software like Openoffice) and Notepad++ (or again some other text editing program but this is the best one when it comes to modding in my opinion).

The program which we will be using here is called Batch Rename Utility, it's again some free software provided over at this link: https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Download.php

Again if you don't want to install anything I suggest getting the Portable Version which is just a simple zip called BRU_NoInstall.zip that you simply need to extract again as with freac earlier.

After extracting it you will need to open up the version according to your system, so if you have a 32 bit Operating System, open the 32 bit version of the program, if you have a 64 bit one, open the corresponding one and so forth.

And this is how I did it -

I opened the files that I wanted in the program, again I just pressed ctrl and A to select all of them in a folder, then right clicked and did Clipbord Copy - Filename + Ext.

Then I pasted them in a blank excel table, and did the same thing with the files that I want to rename them to.

So as it says in that topic that I've linked above, you want the Old File names to be on the left side, as in the files that you want to rename, and the New file names to be on the right side, as in the files that you want to rename them to.

What your excel table should look like is this, again by following the instructions from that topic:

Now this is what I did different in that as you can see I would need to change the code for each of the lines individually in the H row since it didn't group them all up automatically so I just copied the rest of the columns and rows into a Notepad++ file and then used the Search and Replace function to remove all of the empty spaces between the lines to get this:

Once again, all of these need to not have spaces between them as it says in the article or else BDU will not read the list.

And then we just need to feed the list to BDU by going to Actions, Import Rename-Pairs, Import Rename Pairs and then simply select the .txt file you've created with the renaming text.

Select all of the files that you want renamed and then click on the button that says Rename on the bottom right.

Again I'm sorry that I cannot provide anymore pictures, gifs or videos of what I do in the program but my record software just refuses to cooperate.

Anyway, that's about it for the audio conversion and renaming process, it might look like it's very long and complex but in reality it's not, my big blocks of text just make it look like it is but it's just around 5 minutes of your time after you get the hang of things and do it once.

How to upload a mod to the workshop 如何把mod上传到创意工坊
Even though there is already a manual section inside the Panzer Knights workshop tool I still decided to write this part because I struggled quite a bit until I could figure out everything and why it gave me certain errors and so forth before I could upload the mods so I'll try to save you the same gripe here.

So first off, getting the workshop tool itself.

This is how you can find it, if you're having trouble with it in the first place that is.

If you still cannot see it make sure to restart your Steam as it just recently released and it's possible that your Steam didn't update to include it yet.

Next, install and open the workshop tool and you will be presented with this window:

Now, you will want to create your own mod with your own folder addresses in the top 2 fields.

But for the purposes of showing you how I did it I will use the Girls und Panzer mod as an example once again.

After you've created the mod project you will find this in your folder:

Note: The description file is made by me because the tool didn't save my original description for some reason so I had to re-write it, this is why I made a backup so I don't lose it again.

Moving on, you will need to create another folder with a similar name to your first folder, like this:

And finally a third folder, again with a similar name where you will actually put your files and other stuff.

So basically you will have your core folder which will contain your project (.proj) file, then a secondary folder which is mostly empty, and then a third folder which actually has your things in it.

Why you need to have that secondary additional folder that's mostly just empty? I have no idea, it's what the system wants and if you don't make it it will give you this error message when you try to check it:

We will come back to the check section a bit later.

Anyway, moving on again.

This is what your mod .ini file will need to look like inside -

Note: As mentioned before I am using Notepad++ for this.

The first two lines are self-explanatory I think, so I'll just go to the others directly.

The "pic=" parts you see are the character portraits, meaning that you will need to provide all 3 parts.

Meaning the 400x720 resolution character_l, the 128x128 character_s and the 2 eyes pictures because the system counts them as one single package for a character that you want to replace, and not as separate entities.

Other than that the wingman pictures are counted as single entities and same with the voice files (=audio), so it's only just the character portraits/pictures which are counted as a single package like I said.

Now, the check section again.

If you're having trouble with uploading the mod for some reason this will be very helpful as it gives you a clue as to what exactly is wrong.

For example, I had a 1024x1024 resolution .png image that I wanted to use as a preview picture for the mod but the workshop didn't accept it and gave me this error message which is very vague:

That means you have the all clear from the system and can finally upload your mod to the workshop.

As you may have noticed I skipped over the manual and reference parts of the workshop tool because as I already mentioned the manual is well written but leaves out some things like the preview picture resolution for example and might be hard for other people to also understand.

While the reference section I did not use because the mod was already made, all that was needed was for me to adapt it for the workshop tool to upload it but it might be useful if you want to see which character uses what files that you can replace and so on and so forth -

Note: The M4A2 Sherman is not fully functional, you have been warned.

The mod is intended for people that would like to just test out the tanks and skip on the grinding.

To install it simply put the folder contained in the zip file inside the main Panzer Knights directory, to get to there follow the instructions in the very beginning of this guide.

Between the 3 sections, as in art, audio and tables, the pictures, voice and text files can all be edited to create an overhaul mod for the game as mentioned previously.

I want to once again thank my friend AGENTS OF G.E.N.S.E.C. for helping me mod the game and providing the picture examples of modding in the game and what's possible.

And BinaryTimeLord for the heads up on the art link mentioned in the previous section.

Lastly, nothing here is final and everything is up to be changed up, from the pictures to the text and in the future I also hope to provide some videos as well as a showcase of the modding potential of the game with audio and everything.

Can't really help you with that unfortunately, I only know about the names thing that I mentioned previously.

You can perhaps ask AGENTS OF G.E.N.S.E.C. because I believe he modified some Chinese parts of the game but I'm not sure.

If you're trying to modify the excel files in the tables folder make sure you have " " between each name.

So for example if you write Nishizumi Maho, only Nishizumi will show so you need to write it as "Nishizumi Maho" in order for the entire name to show up.
