The explanation
This is a reformat of my topic that I made around 8 years ago in which I was poorly trying to explain why there was a New Steam Version before after which there was a renaming the happened.

In 2013 THQ, the original publisher of Company of Heroes, sadly went bankrupt and had to sell off all of it's child companies, including Relic Entertainment which got bought by SEGA, a well known Japanese mega corporation that also owns Creative Assembly, the Total War game makers.

With the closing of THQ back then that also meant that the servers that their games used, most notably Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, had to be moved over to some new ones, namely Valve's own Steamworks servers, hence why the "new" CoH was called New Steam Version before being renamed to just Company of Heroes and this became the Legacy Version.
How to get the new version
So if you bought the physical CD/DVD edition of the game which you could get from retail shops you can just simply put in the CD key you were provided with the box of the game through the "Add a game" button on the bottom left of the Steam window and then by clicking "Activate a product on Steam".

If however you lost your original box or CD/DVD and only had your old legacy server account you used to be able to use this tool provided by SEGA/Relic to be able to get a code to use on here: http://cohtool.sega.co.uk

I am not sure if it works anymore but from what I remember from doing it at least it worked on the 3rd time for me at least.
Which version of the game to play
If you want to play the most up to date and latest version of the game you will need to download this one: https://steamhost.cn/app/228200/Company_of_Heroes/

The Legacy Edition version of the game does NOT have any multiplayer support because as I said earlier, the old THQ servers that the game was based on with it's own account system and so forth are sadly dead.

However, as far as I am aware you can still play the campaign and in offline mode against the AI as well as play with mods or modify the game yourself, but don't quote me on that because it's what I've read from other people so I'm not 100% sure about it.
Final words
Welp, that's really about it.

I just wanted to remake my topic here because it was really cringe worthy and I saw a lot of people were still asking questions so I hope this little guide answers some of them and helps people out.

Cheers.

Ever since the new driver had to be installed for the new Indiana Jones, the game cant go full screen, now I cant get past the validation screen. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I don't believe it's possible to play the legacy edition in anything else but single player because it required a Relic account which was located on their servers which explained here are long gone by now unfortunately.

I have an issue, i cant activate the Legacy edition, as it is asking for a key, which i also found under manage CD keys, but it keeps saying that is incorrect. The only reason i want to play Legacy is for a LAN party we are planning on having. Any ideas?

In the old version you had to register the expansions to your account.

Since the game moved to the new Steamworks servers back in 2013 that's no longer needed since they're registered as proper DLCs in Steam itself.

@Haziq, the regular version should work fine, no need for the legacy version.

If i want to play mods, does that mean i need to install the legacy version or the regular CoH1?
