Play Syberia with any audio / subtitle configuration available
By markoh00
If you like to hear one language in a game but want to read another in the subtitles - this guide is made for you. Often the performance of the voice actors in one language is better than in another or you may want to hear the original audio but still like to understand every word and therefore need subs in your own language. Here is how you can play Syberia in any available combinations of audio/subtitles.

Step One: Get the audio
You first have to download the game in the language you want to have the audio for. So in Steam select your desired language and download the game as you would usually. After that browse to you "steamapps\common\syberia\sounds" folder and rename it to whatever you like.

Since there are three cutscenes in the game with (subtitled) dialogue in it you have to rename these files too. The files are "c2_hansannab.syb", "c5_hansanna.syb" and "c10_hansanna.syb". If you chose englisch or spanisch as your audio language you will find those files under "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video\AN" if you chose german or french you will find them under "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video". Rename those three files to whatever you like.

You have to rename the folder/files to prevent that Steam would overwirite them when doing step 2.
Step two: Get the subtitles
After step one we'll have to download the subtitles and graphics (letters, diaries, dialogue options ect.) in your desired subtitle language. To do so select your desired language in steam and allow it to update. Steam will now download about 200-300MB which are the sound files and the subtitles/graphics. After downloading those files browse again to the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds" and delete or rename it. Then rename the folder which we have renamed in step one back to "Sounds". For the three cutscene files from step 1 you need to do the same.

Attention: In case you use english or spanish as your prefered subtitle language the three cutscene files have to be in the folder "D:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video\AN" if you use german or french language as your subtitle language they have to be in "D:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video".

When you did everything right, all text in the game should be in one language and all audio in another. You can do this with every combination of audio/subtitles the game supports.
Example
To make it a bit easier to understand here is an example:

I want german as subtitle language and english as audio language.

1) I enter "english" as language in steam and download the game.

2) I browse through the gamefiles and rename the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds" to "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds_Eng".

3) I rename the files "c2_hansannab.syb", "c5_hansanna.syb" and "c10_hansanna.syb" to "c2_hansannab.syb_eng", "c5_hansanna.syb_eng" and "c10.hansanna.syb_eng". Because the audio language should be english, I find the files in the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video\AN".

4) I enter "german" as language in steam and let it update the files.

5) I delete the new folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds" and rename the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds_Eng" back to "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Sounds".

6) I delete the three files "c2_hansannab.syb", "c5_hansanna.syb" and "c10_hansanna.syb" found in the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video", move the three files "c2_hansannab.syb_eng", "c5_hansanna.syb_eng" and "c10.hansanna.syb_eng" to the folder "SteamApps\common\Syberia\Video" and rename them back to their original names "c2_hansannab.syb", "c5_hansanna.syb" and "c10_hansanna.syb".

Disclaimer
I just tested this for a short while and everything seem to be all right. There might however be side-effects later in the game like crashes or not correct subtitles so try at own risk (although I cannot think of something really bad that could happen).

I hope everybody understands this guide since english is not my native tongue. If something is unclear just ask.

@Min -- I had the same problem. I tried launching the game yesterday and I got "Error initializing sound card," which was weird because Syberia II ran just fine. It turns out the first music file to play upon launching the game (music0.mp3) was corrupted -- by sheer luck I noticed it was 0kb (it's supposed to be 2,909kb). After I replaced that file from the original installation DVD, the game worked fine.

Side note -- I have my DPI set to 150% in Windows 11. To keep the game from repeatedly dumping me back to the desktop, I had to right-click on Syberia.exe, select Compatibility, make sure the first box was unchecked, check the second above "High DPI scaling override" and make sure "performed by Application" was selected. For some reason the change didn't take at first, but eventually it started working properly.

@markoh00: Thank you so much for trying around until you got that error, too :) I really appreciate the effort. I will try again later.

@Min: I experienced a bit around and suddenly I got your error message. In this case it seems as if Steam deleted soe of the audio files (which is the reasn why even renaming the folder did not help). Unfortunately right now I was unable to reproduce this problem again. Right now, try it again and make sure that the first sound file in the sounds folder is "a_arbre01.wav". If this (and additional sound files) is missing, Steam deleted some files and you will get this error. It does not always happen though so please, try again. To be on the safe side (and prevent redownloading) better copy the sound folder (after checkig that it contains the file I mentioned above) somewhere else so that you can fix it easily should Steam again delete files - normally this should not happen.

@Min: Just tested it with the combination English subs and French audio and it works without problems. Are you sure that Steam actually did redownload after switching the language? Maybe it would help me to figure out the problem if you describe exactly how you tried it. Since we both use Win7 the only possible explanation why it did not work for you must be that you did something differnt from what I intended (again - English is not my native langaue so my wording might have been confusing).

@Min: It is more than strange that you still get an error after you changed the renaming of the folder back to the original one so that you have to reinstall - but I will test this as well. Like I said, maybe something has changed. Won't be able to do this today though but I should find the time tomorrow or this weekend.

@markoh00: I tested along the way and it works until I delete the soundfiles (or change the name of their folder) that I don't want to use. After that it would not work anymore even if I changed it back again, so I had to re-install the whole game. I did it on Win 7, 64-bit version. I tried to have French sound and English subtitles.

@Min: That does not really sound like a problem that could come from my fix (since I just exchange the audio tracks inside the files). Did it work fine for you without the fix? What audio/subtitle combination did you try? I could try this as well to see if something changed.
