Description
Was this a good idea, probably not... but here it is anyway!

Adaptation of the Death's Door mechanic from Darkest Dungeon.

In Darkest Dungeon, heroes will not die once their health reaches 0. Instead they enter Death's Door where any damage has a a chance to kill them. The heroes can be healed to get them out of Death's Door but they will gain a debuff which lasts for the remainder of the mission.

Adapted to XCOM terms, all units are given a new ability (Death's Door) that allow them to survive a fatal blow if they have more than 1 health remaining. Whenever this ability triggers, the unit also gains a stacking debuff to hinder their combat effectiveness. Units may be healed back above 1 health to survive another fatal blow any number of times. The ability will not trigger for units that sustain the killing blow and subsequently they won't gain the associated debuff. If the sustaining unit is healed afterwards, they can trigger Death's Door as usual.

Configuration

By default the ability is given to all units except a select few I felt were illogical. The exclusions can be configured in XComGame.ini. It is also possible to change the configuration around where you only list the units you want to give the ability to.
The stat debuffs given can be adjusted in the same file.

I personally believe both sides should play by the same rules, but if you want the ability only for XCOM soldiers, see the pinned discussion.

Skulljack fix

The story related Skulljack ability does not ignore sustain-like abilities, but the Skullmine ability does, so I changed Skulljack to also do so. Otherwise both sustain and death's door would break when given on Captains and Codices.

Hi there! Death's Door from DD is one of my favourite aspects of it so I'm glad to see it imported to one of my other favourite games. Wanted to ask if installing it in the middle of a playthrough would at all corrupt my run? Apologies if it's an obvious question, I'm wary of how much XCOM 2 likes to break over nothing.

i toss grenade on enemy in first mission and instead of dying "death's door" appears above his head and he stays alive with 1hp

DD2 just remade the system for it, it could be a neat bit of inspiration for this mod.

I just had this funny question: Can I use a mod like Advent Research to assign the Death's Door ability randomly to enemies not covered under the blanket rule defined in this mod's XcomGame.ini?

I suppose it is not possible to have a condfig option to allow crits to bypass the effect at this time. Seems like an underrated mod in general.
