Instagib is a Team Fortress 2 mod-gamemode. It’s usually played on specifically designed maps or capture-the-flag maps and requires a server-plugin to play.

The idea behind Instagib comes from the Quake videogame series. This custom-gamemode attempt to recapture the gameplay aspects of Quake servers within Team Fortress 2. The Instagib plugin originally released December 2008. Today roughly 3 servers run this mod.

So what is Instagib in Team Fortress 2?

Instagib is a custom-gamemode where everyone plays as a scout with a sniper rifle that always instantly kills.

In Instagib everyone only has a sniper rifle. The sniper rile fires a lightning sort of tracker and instantly kills opponents. The idea of this weapon is that it mimics the railgun from Quake. The main difference being you can’t scope-in and the railgun doesn’t always instantly kill opponents in Quake.

A lot of the more nuance details of the Instagib mod differ between servers. Usually the sniper rifle player wield has unlimited-ammo. Some servers allow players to also wield a melee weapons. The player can choose whichever melee weapon they want. These melee weapons instantly kill opponents and cause explosions and splash-damage on impact. Both the sniper riles and the melee weapons can be used by the player to fling themselves up into the air, similarly to a rocketjump.

The goal of Instagib can vary greatly. Sometimes the goal is to complete map objectives. Sometimes the goal is to do this with the added twist that a certain number of team kills automatically wins a round. When there are no map objectives the goal is to be the team that reaches a certain number of combined kills first. This is called team deathmatch. There’s also a variant of this where there are not teams and players individually need a certain number of kills to win. This is called free-for-all.

Instagib is normally played on servers alongside the Quake sound effects mod.

And that’s basically Instagib in a nutshell. A translation of gameplay from the past into Team Fortress 2. A really fun twitch-shooter mod-gamemode.

81.19.218.130:27062 (this server runs a custom instagib-like mod so some mechanics are different)

  • The name Instagib comes from the words instantly and gib. Gib means to explode an opponent into little chunks of meat and bodyparts. Instantly suggests the one-hit nature of the mode.

In TF2 in the console put 'connect' and then the ip. Example:

connect 00.000.00.000:12345
