Yavuz Sultan Selim

Here is the Yavuz Sultan Selim/Yavuz Sultan/Yavuz, a former German battlecruiser of the Ottoman Navy and later the Turkish Navy.


Yavuz started life as the SMS Goeben of the Imperial German Navy. She was the second and last member of the Moltke-class battlecruisers. In 1912, Goeben and the light cruiser Breslau formed the "Mittelmeerdivision" in response to the first Balkan War. Just before WW1 broke out, Goeben and Breslau encountered the 2 British battlecruisers Indefatigable and Indomitable, which chased after them when World War 1 was declared. The 2 German ships made it up the Dardanelles before British ships in the area could reach them. Once they made it to Constantinople, the Goeben and Breslau ships were bought by the Ottoman Empire and renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim and Midilli respectively. As Yavuz, she bombarded Russian facilities in the Black Sea, which brought the Ottoman Empire into WW1. The rest of her career was engaging Russian ships in the Black Sea, and sank British monitors during the Battle of Imbros, but was badly damaged by mines. She survived WW1, and after the Turkish War of Independence, was used in the newly formed Turkish Navy. Her damaged she received during WW1 was repaired, and she got a refit soon after. When was recommissioned into the Turkish fleet in the 1930s, the Soviet Navy sent the battleship Parizhskaya Kommuna and light cruiser Profintern from the Baltic, and Greece responded with 2 destroyers. She was still active when WW2 broke out, her and Parizhskaya Kommuna were the last capital ships in the Black Sea, but Yavuz did not engage any ships due to Turkey remaining neutral. After WW2, she greeted the USS Missouri, USS Providence, and USS Power in 1946 with the remains of Turkish ambassador to the US on board Missouri, and Yavuz and Missouri exchanged 19-gun salutes. Yavuz was decommissioned in the 1950s, and offered her to West Germany as a museum ship, but the offer was sadly declined, and she was scrapped in the 1970s. Yavuz was the last dreadnought era capital ship outside of the US, and was the last dreadnought era battlecruiser anywhere in the world.
