Brick Rigs 1.0 Editor Guide
By snerso
The Brick Rigs editor was never an easy tool to use, and 1.0 has increased it's complexity and has changed its format. This complete
guide will help you adjust to or learn the new editor.

Introduction
The Brick rigs editor at first can look intimidating and confusing

This guide will discuss how to navigate and use the Brick Rigs 1.0 editor.
Files
Opening Files

Pressing the File button in the red box will open this menu

Pressing the Open button will show something like this

  • You can search for Local creations, Workshop creations, Subscribed creations, Favorite creations, or Published Creations in the area highlighted in yellow.

  • You can search for your own creations by searching by name in the search box highlighted in green.

  • You can (if the file has them) search by selecting certain tags in the area highlighted in blue.

  • You can access your legacy vehicles (before 1.0) by enabling Legacy Vehicles.

  • You can create new vehicles by pressing Create New Vehicle as highlighted in black. (bottom right)

  • You can sort items by Newest, Oldest, Most Recently Updated, and by alphabetical order in the area highlighted in magenta.

  • Once you have selected a creation you can open it in the editor, spawn it, duplicate the file, delete the file, or open the file in File Explorer.

Saving Files

Pressing the Save as button will open a similar menu from which you can:

  • Search for creations to save over using the search bar and selecting a file, then pressing the overwrite button.

  • Save the current creation in a new file by pressing the save new button.

From there a menu will pop up from which you can:

  • Change the name of a creation.

  • Change the visibility of the creation to public, friends only or private on the workshop.

  • Change the description of the creation.

  • Change the tags of the creation

    Importing Files
Pressing the Import button will show something like this
  • You can search for Local creations, Workshop creations, Subscribed creations, Favorite creations, or Published Creations in the area highlighted in yellow.

  • You can search for your own creations by searching by name in the search box highlighted in green.
  • You can (if the file has them) search by selecting certain tags in the area highlighted in blue.

  • You can access your legacy vehicles (before 1.0) by enabling Legacy Vehicles.

  • You can create new vehicles by pressing Create New Vehicle as highlighted in black (bottom right)

  • You can sort items by Newest, Oldest, Most Recently Updated, and by alphabetical order in the area highlighted in magenta.

  • Once you have selected a creation, you can import it into the editor, and move it with G, and use the mouse to move it horizontally, and holding shift while using the mouse will raise and lower it.

Uploading Files
Pressing the Upload button will open a window similar to the save window. This is for creating a new workshop item, or updating one.
Pressing the Upload As button will open a window similar to the file select window. This is for overwriting a workshop item, or uploading a new item.

NOTE: in previous versions, the editor would automatically remove a driver's seat from the imported creation. In 1.0, the seat of an imported creation is instead set to be a passenger seat.
Editing
The Brick selection menu is mostly self explanatory.
Each section contains bricks of it's type.

Here we have these three sections, which are used for selecting, and modifying parts of a creation.

Select
First, we start with Select. This can be used to select certain bricks by different values.
  • You can select a brick.

  • You can select multiple bricks by holding shift and clicking.

  • You can invert your selection. (which selects all of the
bricks that weren't selected and deselects the bricks that
    were selected.)

  • You can select by Class. (brick type, eg axle, wheel, etc.)

  • You can select by Color.

  • You can select by Material.

  • You can select by Pattern.

  • You can select by Type. (specific bricks, eg 1x1x1, Wheel 2x4x4, etc.)

  • You can select by Recursively Selected. (everything connected
directly and indirectly to the selection.)

  • You can toggle your selection. (deselect/select everything.)

Modify
Now we move on to Modify. Pressing a button with selected brick(s) will modify those bricks respectively.
  • You can delete selected bricks.

  • You can duplicate selected bricks.

  • You can duplicate and mirror selected bricks along the Y
    axis. (left and right.)

  • You can hide a selection of bricks. (makes them invisible.)

  • You can mirror selected bricks along the Y.
axis (left and right) without duplicating them.

  • You can move the selected bricks.

  • You can unhide all hidden bricks.

Tools
The Tool section contains actions that affect the entire creation
  • You can capture a thumbnail.

  • You can edit information on a vehicle. (eg name, tags, etc.)

  • You can redo an undone edit.

  • You can toggle mirror mode to y axis mirror. (left and right.)

  • You can undo an edit.

  • You can change the view mode between default, wireframe,
    and aerodynamic mode.

Mirror Modes
These icons can be found in the bottom right corner.

These are for mirroring across different axis. The four options here are for mirroring across the X axis, (top and bottom) Y axis, (left and right), and Z axis, (front and back). These will spawn two bricks when enabled, and will move the second one according to where you move the first one.
NOTE: Mirroring is still a bit buggy, so don't be surprised when a brick mirrors incorrectly.
The Config Menu
The Config Menu is a panel that shows information about a selected brick. It can be seen on the right side of the screen highlighted in red:
NOTE: "Config Menu" is a term that I came up with for convenience in this guide.

Config Menu in Brick mode
In the Config Menu while in Brick mode, you can change a brick's color, pattern, and material. Any brick with changeable settings (eg actuators, sensors, engines, axles, etc.) will also use this menu for their constraints.

You can also use this window for selection purposes.

The areas highlighted in Red will open a menu similar to this when clicked:

  • You can copy the quality.

  • You can paste a quality from a copied brick.

  • You can pick a quality from another brick.

  • You can select multiple bricks with the same quality.

Scaleables also use this menu for sizing and node spacing.

Config Menu in Movement Mode
While in Movement Mode (after pressing G to move a selection), the Config Menu is a panel that shows location and rotation information for a selected brick. The values shown can only be edited directly after pressing G twice, which unlocks the mouse.
  • You can change between using the world or
using the brick selected as a movement
    reference point.

  • You can change the grid snapping angle and
distance. (distance between steps on grid, and
angles between steps in rotation) *

  • You can change the brick snapping angle and
distance (range in which bricks will snap to
    other bricks within a certain distance/angle) *

* The values shown in these fields are not ideal, but are at least usable. I suggest tinkering with these values until they feel right to you. (NOTE: the brick snapping distance should probably be equal to or higher than the grid snapping distance.)

The areas highlighted in Red will open a menu
where you can copy and paste grid and angle
values.

Config Menu in Observation Mode
When not selecting or moving bricks, the Config menu looks like this:

Here you can modify the view mode, mirror mode, time of day, sun rotation, and atmosphere to your liking.
Keybinds & Movement
Many of these tools have keybinds that make the use of the editor much less tedious. Crucial movement keybinds are as follows:
  • Mouse - Horizontal movement (side to side, forward and back)
  • Shift + Mouse - Vertical movement (up and down)
  • W S A D - Rotate (brick is 0,0 on world axis and rotates off of grid).
The keybinds that I use most are as follows:
  • G - Move selection
  • Ctrl + S - Save
  • Ctrl + C - Copy selection
  • Ctrl + Z - Undo
It can be beneficial to memorize and use more editor keybinds, but I find myself using these most often.
NOTE: These binds are shown as their default values and can be changed under Input Mappings in Settings.

Snapping must be toggled on to make a connection in the editor, the brick you are connecting will highlight green when a connection is active. Legacy bricks only connect the way they can connect just like lego, avoid using legacy bricks ( look like lego ) as they are very limiting.

Axis is keybinds or custom, custom in combination with index are channels, match output channel from source with input channel destination part. Axis action key 1 is left mouse button or numpad 1, 1 - 8 numpad are action keys.
