Damage dependence on distance

From this guide, you will learn the hidden in the game, but at the same time the most important characteristic of weapons in CS:GO, the dependence of damage on distance.

Basic idea
The power of a bullet depends on many factors, including how far it flew before hitting the target. The damage of one bullet can be calculated using the following formula:

Damage = Starting_Damage * Range_Modifier ^ (Distance / 500 units)

Let's figure it out in order:

Damage - the amount of health that the player will lose after being hit by a bullet (if he was in armor, then he will receive only a certain part of this damage).

Starting_Damage - the damage that would be inflicted on the player if we shot at him point-blank.

Range_Modifier - a number from 0 to 1 that is unique to each weapon. It determines how quickly the damage will fall as the distance to the target increases.

Distance - the distance the bullet flew before hitting the player. In the formula, the distance is measured in units and is divided by 500.

Unit in the game is a very small value, so it will be convenient for us to convert it to meters according to the following ratio (accuracy to thousandths):
1 unit = 0.019 meters = 19 millimeters 1 meter = 52 493 units

Next, I'll show you graphs of damage versus distance for different types of weapons, comparing them by category.
Pistols
The horizontal axis shows the distance traveled by a bullet in meters, and the vertical axis shows the damage caused by that bullet.

Note that the graph is cut off at a distance of 78 meters. This is due to the fact that the bullets of all pistols fly only for 4096 units, after which they disappear.

To make it easier to see small details, I present the same graph, but on a larger scale, without Revolver and Deagle, only on the first 50 meters:

The situation changes slightly if the player is wearing armor:

All of these graphs showed the damage when hitting the body. Now let's see what happens when a bullet hits the head. Such hits take a lot of health and are often fatal, so we will only study the distance from which the enemy can be eliminated with a single headshot.

All distances are indicated in meters to the nearest thousandths. If there is a dash, then in this case it is impossible to kill with one hit to the head from any distance at all.

Shotguns
Now let's compare the shotguns. Weapons of this type don't shoot with bullets, but with pellets, absolutely identical to each other. The behavior of each pellet is similar to that of a bullet, so the following graphs show the damage of each of them separately.
Shotguns


Different shotguns fire a different number of pellets in one shot, and their flight range also differs (for this reason, the Sawed-off and MAG-7 graph is pressed to zero at 27 meters). Details in the following table:

Despite the rather high flight range of the Nova and XM1014 pellets, it is almost impossible to hit the target at medium or long range due to the very strong spread.
Light machine guns
Machine guns have always been a very specific type of weapon, however, this guide is dedicated to all CS:GO weapons, so this section will also be touched upon.

Both Negev and M249 (like rifles, but more on them later) have a maximum bullet range in the game - 8192 units (about 156 meters). There isn't a space on any official map that would exceed one and a half hundred meters in length. However, there are custom maps where even this may not be enough to shoot through some positions.

As you can see, the graph line is almost perfect straight and is declining rather slowly. This is due to the fact that the range modifier of machine guns is 0.97 (very close to 1).
Submachine guns
Now let's look at the submachine guns, whose maximum bullet range is 3600 units, or 67 meters (except for the P90 and UMP-45, which are about 3 meters longer).

With armor, the effectiveness drops significantly:

As with pistols, it makes sense to consider the distances at which these weapons can kill in one headshot.

No submachine gun can kill with a single headshot while wearing a helmet. But at the same time, many of them, taking into account the good rate of fire, can cause great damage at close and medium distances.
Assault rifles
Rifles are the main and most powerful weapon in the game, bought whenever players have enough money to do so. They can be divided into 2 main categories within which the comparison is made: assault and sniper.

Let's start with assault. Like machine guns, the range of a rifle bullet is 8192 units, which is equivalent to more than one and a half hundreds meters. At the same time, the damage decreases relatively slowly as the distance increases:

If the enemy has armor, SG 553 comes out on top in terms of damage. This is the only weapon in the game that has exactly 100% armor penetration:

Sniper rifles
The final weapon category in this guide will be sniper rifles. In total, there are 4 types of sniper rifles in the game, however, due to the fact that SCAR-20 and G3SG1 are absolutely identical in all basic characteristics, we will consider them together.

All sniper rifles kill with one headshot from any distance (up to 156 meters).
