WHO AM I

Hello there bypasser!

Allow me to introduce myself:
* Im Splinks.
* Legally I go by Alex Hayes,
but BFFs and family call me
Zander.
* I live in Oklahoma
* Born in 1990
FUN FACT: My birthday (NOV 23)
unfortunately lands on the
Thanksgiving and Black Friday
(depending on the year.)

* I am a graduate in the exciting
world of multimedia art with the
specialty of 3D modeling as my
main skill.

WHY DO I MOD

Well like many others, modding started out as a hobby that quickly became my happy addiction. I tend to create mods to make something i love have variety. At other times I do mods to test limitations within a game's engine. Then there are times I simply make mods to get the bloody idea out of my head and have a good laugh in the process. OOO and i guess there would be those mods I make to practice new methods and skills i have recently learned. Example of this is The Velociraptors mod, that was made for the sole purpose to test $jigglebones. :) Another reason I enjoy to mod is just collabing with fellow modders and sharing ideas and seeing what can be made with crazy minds working together.

HOW DID I START

Well before I leaped into L4D modding I mostly spent my days making custom skins for Smash Brothers and creating themes and plug-ins for apps that went on my modded consoles; but before all that I would do Hex and script hacking to Tony Hawk Underground 2 and American Wasteland. I also did a series of animated Gifs on my deviantart channel as a side hobby and even received a Daily deviation. http://splinks.deviantart.com/ As for source engine modding I taught myself mostly through studying the methods of gmodders and some forum posts involving Half-Life modding. After piecing a few things together I had a fair idea of the majority of the process down, but was still stuck or just issues that would freeze the game. Around this time I met a good friend by the name of MrLanky. He was kind enough to take a look at my Frankenstein of a mod and suggested some pro tips to fix issues. We later down the road would trade info of new findings back and forth till we had a pretty solid formula down. So in other words I owe that man my left nut.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO BEGINNERS

Well from my history I have learned to simply just be silly and have a good laugh during it all. Sure you can make some nice realism high-res mods, but after awhile I have found it's best to take breaks and make mods that make you happy in the long run and feel rewarding to you. The most rewarded I have felt is collaborating with fellow modders. You would surprised to to see what ideas emerge when you ask someone for a suggestion. Another thing I heavily suggest to jump into is just experiment with ideas in unusual ways people wouldn't expect to see a method applied in.

Examples of me experimenting with ideas are the following.

WHAT'S WITH THE POPTART

Well I wish there was an exciting story behind this, but honestly when i was starting out and at the point of making a profile I needed an image. This drawing of an angry poptart was the first thing I saw in my icon folder that i found nifty......and it stuck
THE END
Funny story tho. I did find the origin of the poptart character. He's actually the mascot for Evil Pastry Studios https://www.facebook.com/evil.pastry On an interesting twist of faith the members of the studio have done cosplays for L4D. We eventually got to talk on their facebook page which lead to them seeing my 3d poptart character. They ended up being a great set of folks and let me continue to rock on with the poptart by my side. So feel free to share some love to them.

WHAT IS A "SPLINKS"

The name Splinks was given to me by my highschool friends all because of a sound I made when a friend of mine came up from behind me and poked my sides. I tried to reverse the situation and roll with it hoping all would pass.....Spoiler Alert...It didn't. :)

I truely thank everyone that has supported me over my modding times. I have met great friends and had amazing stories during it all and by god i love it, so I shall say again thanks for being awesome mates.

Q - How long have you been modding and how did you get started?
A - i started when l4d1 came out (in late 2008) i was disappointed with the poor quality of the mods that were available...that motivated me learn how to create my own. textures might be my primary output, but i've also made sounds and worked on a few maps.

Q - Who taught you how to mod?
A - me...i had no mentor, teacher or guide when i first started. valve wiki, art program videos on youtube and alot of trial and error were my only learning resources. it wasnt until after i joined omgot.org, Urik Kane (a very gifted modder) took the time to teach me a few things that helped improve my craft.
Thanx Urik!

Q - What tools do you use?
A - all use all free-to-use software. i refuse to use programs i can not afford to purchase. (no cracked/stolen software on my rig..its unethical). i use GCFScape to extract default .vtf (texture image) and .vmt (texture instructor) i need to modify. i use Gimp, Paint.net and Vtfedit to re-edit .vtf files. i recommend you seek out plug-ins to expand paint.net and gimp abilities...i have tons of them installed.
i use audacity for my sound mods.

Q - Any advice for newer modders?
A - be original!...whenever possible, make your own overlays and textures. this will give your skins a unique fingerprint (make it easier to identify as your work). passion and art need to be as one....projects assembled without faith/passion/skill are doomed to fail. you have to believe in what you are making in order for it to be successful. always work in layers and learn about normal map, alpha channel and vmt editing a.s.a.p. (valve wiki)
think outside the box when making stuff. for example - i needed to add more detail to a hair mod i was working on. instead of using a brush, i used part of a woodgrain texture using an overlay effect to add the needed detail and color to finish my mod.

Q - You have made several hundred mods...what keeps you going?
A - its hard to say...as long as passion/inspiration is there, i will keep making stuff.
as of late, ive been spending more time helping/teaching and making stuff for/with other modders.
  • I'M A SURVIVOR........INFECTED WITH THE MODDING VIRUS
  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!
A HELLSING PRAYER - In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead shall be banished into eternal damnation, Amen.

Q – Can you tell us about yourself?

A – Well I live INDY work a 8-5 job where i'm on a PC 8 hours a day. I'm a true OG original gangsta FPS gamer, broke my cherry on Duke Nukem 3D. Always build my own PC’s. My Husband is a bigger PC Geek than me. He has inspired many of my mods so you know that’s got to be true love!

Q – How did you come up with your Steam Name?

A – Tricky is the name I used back in my Solider of Fortune 2 days. I got the name idea from the rap group, Run DMC the song - It’s Tricky. You know the hook part of that song that goes …Tricky (Tricky) Tricky (Tricky) huh![/url] I created a 1000+ sound mod for my Clan servers. That hook was my own personal sound file. I’ve used the name ever since.

Q – How long have you been Modding?

A – My SOF2 Days 2006-2009 I did female retexture skins mostly. I was known for my server sound mods. I think we had more fun insulting each other with sound files than killing one another. Also the extensive work I did on the BOT system. It was a fun time on my servers during that 4 year period. SOF2 Mods by Tricky[soldieroffortune2.filefront.com] I’ve only been back into modding again for a little over a year now.

Q – What type of Modder are you?
A – I would call myself a Retexture Artist. I do not know how to import or replace items. I have from time to time done mods that came to me as requests or from a suggestion. I’m still learning and sometimes I get tips from the other modders out there. Once I learn a new skill I have gone back and redone my mods to improve them. I have in the past and still willing to partner with other modders. I know my limitations and still humbled by others that are vastly ahead of me in areas of mod skills.

Q – What type of Programs do you use to make your Mods?[/b]
A – Beside the standard tools required for Workshop. Depends on the mod I’m doing. My primary paint tool is Photoshop. I use Paint.net for all my bump/normals. I only use Gimp for flag mods cause Splinks made us all a nice easy template. For animation mods I use Sony Vegas HD and Jasc Animation Shop.

Q – What do you like most about Modding L4D2?[/b]
A – I’m really addicted to the process It’s hard to put into words. But to go from idea to publish is the biggest rush. I love that people out there like what I’m producing and understand my level of humor.

Q – What do you like least about Modding L4D2?[/b]
A - Some ideas I just can’t pull off. Mostly it’s how it was made by Valve that limits what myself as a retexture artists can do to it. Then there’s the 2GB limitation per Steam Workshop account. If you max out then you can't go back and update anything with no room to reload a newer version. So you have to leave some unused space free for that. Then go buy another copy of L4D2, create another Steam Account to be able to keep publishing more mods. That's why you see some of us have repeat names and everything ties back to our original Workshop account names.

Jules

Q- Who are you?

The Quincy Jones of Valve modding, all up in the background.

Q - What tools do you use?

1. Valve Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools - The particle editor is my favorite way to turn this game upside down.

2. Photoshop CS3 for texture work, the old and trusty CS3 is the most intuitive and wonderful graphic design tool I've ever used. While I love texture mods I don't really enjoy working with modelling much because, dear reader, you might be surprised to learn that 99% of modellers don't make their own models. These folks download or rip them and then port them. Porting is an art form in itself and it's very awesome- yet it doesn't modify the game but instead replaces elements of the game.

3. Crowbar (Zeqmacaw) is great for decompiling or compiling model files.

3. Notepad++ is the ideal tool to modify .qc or .vmt files. It can be used to add custom particle effects to survivors or other model files, or more importantly to perfect the shader settings for your new fancy retex :)

4. The basics: VTFEdit (for processing Valve Texture and Material Files), GCFScape (For unpacking the game file directories)
Prophet
WHO AM I?

I'm known as Prophet/Yogensia. "Yogensha" is japanese for Prophet (or at least I think so) but as a username it was used on most sites, so I ended up changing it to Yogensia.

WHY DO I MOD?

Because I enjoy modelling simple objects in 3D, like the melee weapons I do for Left 4 Dead 2.

WHAT KIND OF MODS DO I MAKE?

I don't care too much about real life firearms so I usually model melee weapons and other slightly more extravagant items[gamebanana.com].

You can find all my mods on the Steam Workshop (note that some of the mods here are collaborations).

You can also find my mods on GameBanana[gamebanana.com], as well as other unused 3D models, Works in Progress, and tutorials stuff.

WHAT WAS MY FIRST MOD?

Hadhafang (Arwen's Sword) for TES:Skyrim.

HOW DID I GET INTO L4D MODDING?

Some months after releasing the Hadhafang mod I decided to make some melee weapons for Left 4 Dead 2. I wasn't finding much information on how to compile melee weapons and almost gave up but I came across Doktor haus' Damascus Blade, and I thought I would give it another try by asking him for some help. He was kind enough to reply and even send me the compiling files for that mod. Taking a look at those files I finally managed to figure out compiling melee weapons for L4D2.

FAVORITE MODS I HAVE WORKED ON?

Probably the Shredder Pipe Wrench which was a made in collaboration with Doktor haus and the ZombieTools Bone Machete. I also liked how the Tomb Raider inspired Ice Axe turned out...

PEOPLE I'D LIKE TO THANK

- Doktor haus for his help that got me into L4D2 modding, support and collaborations.
- Splinks for his hard work providing example material and documentation for L4D2 modders.
- ZeqMacaw for his work on Crowbar.
- Rafael De Jong, Kosai106, Corvalho, MrFunreal, TOG|K1CHWA and many others for their feedback, support and tutorials.
- The GameBanana community and the Left 4 Mods steam group for getting me in touch with such talented people.
- And of course everyone that has downloaded my mods. :)

Lt. Rocky
Q: Who Are you?
A: CRYPTIC METAPHOR.

Q: Who Are you in a more Straight-Forward sense?
A: An Auti with an overburdening desire to express himself, which is not something common in an Auti, to my knowledge. I could be one of those double-negative dysfunctionals that's flipped even in the context of my own realm, so that I'm willing to approach people, yet double an antisocial, cynical, language-impaired nutcase. If you happen to live in Edmonton and have managed to strike up a conversation with a random person who started randomly yelling, claiming how much he hates everything (especially Activision) and then starts studdering and saying stuff like "Which way is go", there's a rare chance that could have been me.

I'm also someone who would be cursing like a sailor if Steam would allow it, which spares the community having to see me sound like Francis on the day he forgets to take his Prozac.

Q: What sort of mod work do you do?
A: I'd like to answer that as "Wherever my wild and wacky imagination takes me", but that'd be a lie to anyone who follows my work. My Workshop page may suggest a person who possibly enjoys working on weapon mods.

We're still awaiting the final confirmation on such a bold claim, however.

When I'm not being cheeky however, I'm normally doing mod work with other members of the community. Such tag-teams have brought the world works such as the Tar-21 by myself and Krycek; the Dragunov by Jimmakos and yours truly; the MP1911 by Skaveria and moi; the Mysterious Nick by myself and People Like Grapes, as well as a few unnanounced projects I have going on with K1chwa, Paysus and Skaveria. I've managed to accumulate several connections with many skilled high-tier modders in the Source community, such as Teh_Snake and Mr. Brightside. Anything could be possible in the future with me.

You could say I'm the volcano of the modding community: crazy, unpredictable, incredibly hot, probably going to kill someone, and somewhat of a phallus.

Q: How did you get into your mod work?
A: Lord knows how long I've been toying with the workings of a game. I can at least say I've been doing it before all the cool kids were. Being a programmer at heart my modding days go far back as the days of the second Half-Life 2 and Painkiller, but it was not until Christmas of last year where I finally got into doing projects for a public audience. Most of my knowledge is self-trained: I learned the workings of Blender, Crowbar, VMT editing and texturing editing on my own. I got a bit of help in learning the final steps of compiling view models thanks to Crowbait and Funreal, but overall I can at least say most of it was my own learning. My first public mod was the Duke Nukem Voice Pack mod I released in June 2013 on l4dmaps, and later 2014 for the workshop, a mod I really need to work on some more and finish in the future. Precious Magnum Opus and whatnot.

Q: Your tag says you're a NMRiH Dev. What is that?
A: Before I start, NMRiH (No More Room in Hell) is a Half-Life 2 mod/conversion that pits players in a zombie-infested world much like Left 4 Dead, alibet more inspired by the works of George Romero (♥♥♥♥ me, I almost wrote that as John Romero) and with a more slower paced, sinister and challenging set up. Not too long ago the game was put up on Steam and is available for no charge. You should check it out if you've never heard of it before. I work with the dev team as a C++ programmer.

Q: How did you become part of the team?
A: Its certainly not in the way you're thinking, if that means anything. I first tried out NMRiH when it first hit Steam, and found it a fun alternative to Left 4 Dead, be it one that needed some more work to stand out. When I got into modding for Left 4 Dead, it had always been in my intentions to port some of the weapon models (as well as other things) from NMRiH to L4D2. If you follow my work you should know that I've managed to port three weapons from the game to L4D2.

However, shortly after porting the last one (the CZ-858) I got a notification from a friend in the community that one of the executives in the NMRi was requesting an audience with me to stop my porting of their assets. Let me make it very clear that I take my work very seriously - to a professional level. I put a great amount of stress and effort in following the laws and rules of copyright and Fair Use, and that I always make an attempt in ensuring that every author that has touched a piece I work with is credited properly. I however made an oversight in the rules of NMRiH's work; I had assumed that because NMRiH was a game available on Steam that it was a liscened product and therefore one that fell under the laws of Fair Use. It never occured to me that because it was only a mod, it therefore was not liscened, and thus one needed written permission from the authors to use their work. Such a statement is even written on their forums, of which I didn't know existed. A very embarrassing mistake on my part.

I got in touch with the executive and we managed to work out things without having to take down the work I did from the workshop or then-known-as l4dmaps. It was because I had properly credited the dev team and the authors that had made the models, that I was able to be overlooked in my error, apart from others that have tried to take their work and claim it as their own. It was after being shown the statement on their forums that I had discovered the thread that they were accepting applications. Everything else is history from that point, and one portfolio submission later I'm now working from the No More Room in Hell Dev Team as a programmer.

I'm not 100% sure if its occured to the entire team that the guy that got discovered for supposedly stealing their models and putting them in Left 4 Dead 2 is now working with them, but because the same excecutive from before was part of the group that interviewed me, I'm sure there's no hard feelings. Regardless, I am dreading the day for when I am virtually tackled by a 3d modeling co-worker and starts yelling at me in a language I may not even know ;~;

Q: Do you plan to do anything else or anything new in the future?
A: As I said, I'm a programmer at heart, and therefore modeling and compiling is a new world for me. I'm always trying to branch out with new things and recently finished up my first survivor replacement, with some more planned and on the way. With help from Rayman I've managed to get into L4d2's vscripting, and if all can go well I may try to get into making coded scripts for the community to download. My NMRiH dev work is bringing me to new knowledge with the workings of Source.

I'm also hoping to get into professional indie work. In the best case scenerio I could be a future dev for the company CodeHatch, who are developing the game StarForge on Steam. Should all else fail, I may even just start a personal project that could appear on Kickstarter. I've managed to finish filling out the design document for a game I've had on my mind for a few years.

CRYPTIC FORESHADOWING.

Q - What was your inspiration and how did you get started?
A - I started playing Left 4 Dead 2 back in 2012. Later in the years I was interested in creating my own personal mods to make my game more enjoyable. So I started to search tutorials on how to re-texture weapons, items, etc. This is the guide I used to begin with. It was really helpful, thank you LucK_NoT_SkiLL for the great guide.

Q - What programs do you use?
A - I use GFCScape, VTFEdit, Paint.NET, and Photoshop.

A short list of all the retextures I have done.
Thank you to everyone who supports my mods, you're pretty swell!

What I mod
I have modded the survivor models[sites.google.com] by porting and tweaking characters from other games. I am not as prolific as many of the other L4D2 modders, but because of my discoveries, I am happy to have influenced almost every survivor mod out there. Almost everything I have learned and discovered I have placed in my Modding a Left 4 Dead 2 Survivor[sites.google.com] tutorial. I also develop a tool, called Crowbar, for decompiling and compiling source-engine models.

Why I mod
L4D2 is currently my favorite game to play -- co-op or campaign mode my favorite game mode to play. Because of playing it often, I like to change the 8 survivors every so often to keep it interesting. I also enjoy modding because it's like solving puzzles.

Tips
For L4D2 modding, start at the Valve Developer Community wiki (VDC). Check out my tidbits of L4D2 info[sites.google.com]. Also, when totally stumped, use Google to search. When all else fails, ask questions in the Dead 4 Mods discord chat[discord.gg].

History of my modding
I started modding long ago modding Doom 2 when it was the latest popular first-person shooter. About 2003, I started playing Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (JK for short) and discovered its convenient Cog scripting language. Until about 2010, I was so far entrenched in modding JK, I patched JK's exe file to provide more Cog features and fix issues so the game could be played on newer systems. I even created and ran a modding site[jkhub.net] dedicated to the game and its successor, Mysteries of the Sith, that ran on a slightly modified version of the same engine as JK. When I started modding L4D2 back in 2010, I had no experience with modding source engine games and no experience modding models. I learned slowly by finding reference documents and tutorials via Google. Upon finding da1barker's Custom L4D2 Character[l4d2.gamebanana.com] tutorial, I had enough info to start modding survivor models in L4D2.

About my name and avatar
Longer ago, back in my more youthful days, I had some creative ideas for some sci-fi and fantasy stories that involved a man who had been transformed into a macaw. His name was Zeq (pronounced "zeck" and rhymes with "deck"), which was made from using the two most infrequently used letters in the English language and finding a vowel that sounded good between them. Later, I realized the letters on a Qwerty keyboard form a triangle on the left side of the keyboard, which has no meaning whatsoever, but I thought it was cool. The name also happens to be unique enough where I can use it everywhere online. The avatar image comes from a free desktop wallpaper I found years ago that matched the look I wanted and was very high quality.

:)
Dok̨tor haus̨

WHO ARE YOU?

  • Doktor haus. You pronounce it "Dock-Tore House", not "hoss", not "hoose", not "throatwobbler mangrove".
  • My legal name is Edward, which was chosen long before Twilight ruined my world.
  • I live in Alabama, but don't speak with a Southern drawl ...although I can turn it on when I need to.
  • Currently 25 and my birthday falls on Groundhog Day, which is a great movie.
  • My catchphrase is "Stay fresh, cheese bags!"

WHY DO YOU MOD?

For the same reason I started: I want to see a gun, character etc. in a game.

WHEN & WHY DID YOU START?

GameBanana lists it as 3 years ago, which sounds right. Once I learned that no one does requests, I took matters into my own hands and started to learn modding.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MOD?

My first one[tf2.gamebanana.com] was awful; it had much lower standards than today and at one point, the slide scrunched up like an accordion. My first L4D2 mod must have been a recompile of Lanky's 454 Casull. Back then, there wasn't a wealth of tutorials like there are today, so I (and many other veteran modders) had to learn through trial and error, asking questions and in my case, begging arby for his source files. He taught me a lot of what I know and was even kind enough to fulfill several requests, and even though he doesn't mod L4D2 anymore, big thanks are due. Down the road, I met Splinks, K1CHWA, Pajama, Zeq and others who taught me their individual specialties, so many thanks go out to them as well.

SOME PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS?

  • First to discover method for non-buggy sounds
  • First to implement particle muzzle flash on viewmodels
  • Released several preview videos with long, overly epic intros

FAVORITE MOD YOU WORKED ON?

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121083739

It was the last request I gave to arby... It cost a few bucks too, but I had complete control over how it turned out (BTW requesters, if you really want something done, pay for it!). I made sure it was as accurate as possible to the version from Blood Money (Absolution wasn't out at the time), right down to the engravings, grips, glow sights, even the metric measurement of the long slide. Then K1CHWA added his touch to the flashlight and sexy leather grips and Prophet/Yogensia modeled a few spare parts (skeletal trigger, extended thumb safety and slide release). I guess that's why I've compiled it for L4D2, CSS, DAB and now NMRiH... with further plans.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Obviously, "Doktor haus" is a German play on the titular character of House MD, the US TV show. However, it was also inspired by two of my favorite bands: Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy, whose drum machine is named Doktor Avalanche. More useless trivia: The fonts I use for my name on GameBanana, YouTube vids etc. are the same used for those bands' logos. It's also why I don't capitalize "h".

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NOT MODDING?

I sing and play a few instruments and over the years, I've had several solo projects ranging in everything from goth rock to black metal. I also dabble in voice acting; I've been in several L4D2 campaigns and the lovely Interesting NPCs mod[3dnpc.com] for Skyrim.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I'm not a pretentious modding god/Zoey fapper like the rest.
Rayman1103

Q - When did you start modding L4D2?
A - I started modding L4D2 after I created a Steam account back in August of 2010. Before that, I had played both L4D1 and L4D2 on the Xbox 360. As I was a console gamer back then. Once I got on Steam, I immediately wanted to dig into modding the game.

Q - What type of mods do you create?
A - I create script mods like Mutations. I'm not really good with level design nor creating models or textures. But I do know how to setup entity I/O in Hammer.

The very first mod I've created was my Mutation Mod.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121070254
This mod is the latest I've created. Think of it as a lite version of Sourcemod, that doesn't require a dedicated server.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=214630948
I saw other mods out there that add the numeric health for your survivor teammates, but they changed the entire HUD. So I decided to create my own using Valve's default HUD.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121088866
This makes the cut Survival and Scavenge maps selectable from the map list.
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121828271
I swapped the survivor models around using a hex edtior, but clients that don't have the mod will experiance buggy animations. (Like I said, I don't do models).

BloodShank
Q - Who is your BloodShank, and what does he do?
A - He is someone who loves to splatter zombie guts while listening to lots of metal music. He replaces textures and sounds for this gruesome game called Left 4 Dead 2.

Q - So, how did you get into modding?
A - I got into modding when some of my friends told me about modding Fallout 3 and how much it improved the gameplay. Then I made a steam account in july of 2010 and started to play with mods for L4D2 and other games.

Q - What are your most popular mods for Left 4 Dead 2?
A1 - In 2012 I released "The Incapacitating/ Incredible Hulk" mod for L4D2 on the Gamebanana website. Archanor (who was the original creator of the mod) made the hulk skin for Left 4 Dead 1 back in 2008 and I recreated his mod for L4D2. In 2013 I then posted it on the workshop.

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=170688109

A2 - A year later in 2013, I went on L4Dmaps.com and found out that the "Rammstein Concert" mod has been taken off the website. I contacted the original creaters (Sariel and Death Angel) of the mod and I asked them if I could upload it to the steam workshop. I got the permission, so I recreated the mod by recreating the song list, adding music to the jukebox, adding some new images, and a new name for the mod "Rammstein at the Dark Carnival".

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=127966308

A3 - Then I got lots of requests to change the GIF images in the original mod, So I made a seperate version without the GIFs. More people seem to enjoy that one more, but I still perfer the original.

Q - What programs do you use to make your mods?

A - I use Photoshop, VTFedit, and Paint.net for my image work, I use Audacity for the sounds, and I use GCFscape to easily place the mods in addons.

Q - Would you like to do other kind of mods other than Concerts, voice, and reskin mods and are you thinking on modding other games?

A - Yes, I would like to know how to rig models just like Splinks, MrLanky, and other modders like them. I would also like to try to take part in making some maps with some of the the best L4D2 map creaters. To answer the second part of the question, I would like to make mods for Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, TESV Skyrim, Garrys mod, GTA IV and GTA V.

Q - Why don't you upload mods on the workshop anymore. and where can we find the latest mods you work on?

A - The reason why I stopped uploading to the workshop is that I cannot not get the program that you use to upload the mods to work. Maybe I can get it to work again someday. The place I always upload my work is on http://www.gamemaps.com/profile/217780.

Thank you guys for the interest/ support for my mods, and thank you for reading my story.
Twilight Sparkle

: Who are you?

: Well hello, my name is Twilight Sparkle Or Cloudy Jay, but some of my friends know me more for my real name May, im a 19-year-old female and i have been doing modding for the game L4D2 (And maybe some other games as well), my kind style is the Modeling Replacement.

: Whats with using the name from a character from My Little Pony?

: Well, there's not much to talk about that, it just that i have been using this name like 2 years ago and at that time i started to like it so now i have been using alot but sometimes i change it because when i go to someone, people staying talking stuff about the show and off topic stuff as well so yeah, that's pretty much about it.

: How you got interested into the modding bussines?

: Well, not a long time ago i saw those good people for example, Splinks and Mr. Lanky doing those nice skin and mods for the game, so i start wondering about why not doing that as well so you can do stuff for your own and do more of what you always wanted, so i start working on my first weapon replacement which was a weapon for CS:GO, but then i got into some heavy problems about how to do it?, but with the help of watching some tutorials about how to do it thanks to Doktor Haus and then someone really good called Lt. Rocky, teach me a lot how the compile works and how to do better on the model, so now i could make it work and better thanks to him, i couldn't done it without him and also, thanks to someone i love i could get this far, and from now on i keep doing some weapons and recently, some survivors replacement as well.

: Could you show us some of your items?

: Sure, here's a couple of them. :

Angelaa^^ (first, default username), a.k.a. <name changes a lot>
Hello!

I suck at formatting on Steam and I don't have a visual identity yet so I'm gonna use Sparkle GIF's to make it more interesting

Q: Who are You?
A: Hoe™. Just an average Eastern European.
Born in: 1998
Star sign: Capricorn

Q: Tell us about yourself
A: I've recently graduated college, trying to find myself in the industry (like I'm trying to find a username that isn't a joke), but I've always known 3D and 2D art was my calling, besides linguistics, but that's more of a hobby. As a teenager, I've always had a thing for taking things apart to see how they've functioned, and video games were no exception. That's how I got into modding, but due to depression, I've severely underestimated myself, stunting my growth as a person and my skills were not able to improve because of it.

Looking back, I'm impressed with what I've managed with an ASUS laptop that had no graphics card and 2gb of RAM. Now, after therapy and self introspection, I'm still growing as a person, but enjoying the journey in the meantime.

Moral of the story, always strive to be the best version of yourself.

And if you don't love yourself, how the hell are you going to love anybody else?

Q: What tools do you use?
A:
  • I used to use Milkshape 3D as my first tool. Very base-line and limiting but it was good for learning and was sufficient for modding older games like The Sims 2 or Half-Life. Later, I started using Blender for all of my needs. (Autodesk is my opp, I had to use Maya and 3ds MAX for college, but i still prefer Blender)
  • I use Photoshop for my texturing needs.

Q: What would you do when you okay so he said yes would go?
A: I would say god bless his soul.

Bless!

MonkeyRebel117
Q: Who are you and when did you start modding.
A: I'm MonkeyRebel117, I was born in 95 and I first began modding in July of 2014. I first started releasing mods for Gamemaps.com, now I upload to STEAM (but I'll still upload to gamemaps as well).
Q: Why did you start modding?
A: The reason why I first started modding was because I realized that there weren't that many Halo mods on both STEAM and Gamemaps, and I LOVE Halo, So I decided to do something about it.
Q: Did you have any help from anybody else?
A: Yes I did have help, If it wasn't for the Character Guide on the workshop I probaly would've given up. (Thanks guys for all the help.)
Q: Do you like feedback?
A: I always appreciate feedback whenever possible, (even if it's bad) I'll use it to improve my work.
Q: Do you do requests?
A: I am currently not accepting any requests right now (due to the fact that I am behind on some)
Parting words:
I hope you guys enjoy my mods and I hope my mods make your Zombie survival that much cooler.

Q: Who is LuciferFlash?
A:Well, My Name is Zoltán, I'm from Hungary, a regular 19 years old guy, who love editing visuals, make things as good as it can be, and as good as he can do.

Q: Why is your name LuciferFlash?
A:Usually people think, I must be a dumbass idiot, unfriendly,satanism..ect...But when they starting to know me, they realise, im such a good boy, and yes, im friendly until you are, and no satanism or anything :D I think it's just sounds badass?
And also, i feel like it's reflecting a good quote ,,Not everything is what it seems"

Q: How it's all started ?
A: Hmmm..., when i was younger, like 10 or 11 years old i got a computer, i always loved to draw, or color things, so i also searched the internet about drawing techniques, first i used paint (the old xp version). Than a few years later i found Gimp, and "mastered" it but those pictures i made back than sadly are gone, i didn't know any sites that is about picture editing. Later the XNALara community began (i'm a big Tomb Raider fan since i was 6) I did some lame pictures,but later i noticed, they are became better and better, so here is where my 3DArtist things started,
I started to use 3Ds Max to improve my pictures, learned how to use Photoshop.Sadly im limited, cause my computer was, still, and will be a mess X)
Than much later, i found L4d2, i fell in love with it played a lot, and still. First i didn't know its moddable so i was only playing it, than i just found some mods and decided to become a modder.
(you can find me on deviantart.com http://luciferflash.deviantart.com/ )

Q: What was your first mod?
A: My first mod was a Rochelle recolor :D

Q: 3D modeling as a job?
A: Would be soo cool, because it's a thing i like to do, but sadly if i stay in my country it's nearly impossible.
Q: What mods are you proud of ?
A: I'm proud of these, because they all are original ideas , not like someone asked for it, or
something else.

Q: Do you take requests?
A: Well, i'm that kind of modder, if i dont like the request, i wont do it, so i say yes, but not all requests.

Q: Whats that "◀H•A•B•D▶" tag in your name ?
A: My loved clan's tag, im not the founder of it, but i became a moderator a long time ago, there are only good, friendly players, i would say that's my steam family :3
Ellie
Q: Who are you?
A: I'm Ellie. I live in Jackson, WY, and you should not ♥♥♥♥ me with ;). More seriously, I do not disclose this information.

Q: Are you a boy or a girl?
A: My prior experience taught me that disclosing this information most of the time resulted in a different behaviour from the people knowing. Therefore, I trend also not to disclose it.

Q: Why such strange choices of words?
A: I am a Lawyer, deal with it ;).

Q: What sort of mod work do you do?
A: I mostly do texture mods, but not the basic retextures. Instead of making character mods (that I still do not know how to do after all these years), that other people are way more talented at, I went into a field of modding that most modders know very few about. This field is called "Material Proxies", and allows for a lot of cool stuff.

I am the modder who ''invented'' RNG and made the first RNG mod(s), although I'm pretty sure that someone would have found that one day or later. Oh, by the way, this stands for "Random Number Generation", and is mainly used in the Speedrunning communities.

I am more of a researcher, trying to do things that nobody ever did before, and, most important, that do work online on official servers. With the experience I acquired in the specific field I make mod for, I am now able to code entire scripts within textures, something that was never intended.

Q: How did you get into your mod work?
A: I do not really remember. I did start alone because I was curious and mostly tried to understand everything alone. Lt. Rocky was kind and helped me make my first "3D Mod", which was a Medkit replacement.

Q: Do you plan to do anything else or anything new in the future?
A: I'm probably soon leaving to new horizons, so as a sort of farewell, I try to document everything I did during my active years, and I also try to find last minute cool stuff, so, maybe, in the future, people can make cool mods with the things I invented :D.
Deep Thunder
Q: Who is Deep Thunder?
A: I am a person and I do things.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Why do you mod?
A: I mod for many reasons. These reasons also correspond with my reasons for mapping.
For one, I mod because it's rewarding to see people appreciate my work, and much less even use my mod that came from a simple idea. Even if a couple-hundred people subscribe to your mod, you can definitely feel something from making a handful of people happy.
Another reason I mod is for the thrill of seeing something that I love modified into another medium while having the legal freedom to do so (given the circumstances of modding). Left 4 Dead 2 just so happens to be an amazing choice for modifying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: Where / how did you learn to mod?
A: When I first attempted modding Left 4 Dead 2, I used YouTube as my guide. I started out with something that I assumed was simple; sound mods. I didn't get everything right on my first try, but through some perseverance and research, I managed to accomplish this:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=308978464

I was proud to have 10,000+ visitors on my first mod.

After that point, I didn't exactly have 'plans' for being a "full-time modder", if you will. I mod in a spontaneous manner; if an idea crosses my mind of what I want to mod, I'll try to do it. (Provided other life factors are in my favor)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Why do you map?
A: I am nearly, if not completely, infatuated with mapping. It is one of one of the most rewarding tasks that provides me with a sensory overload. The cruise is simply explosive and amazing. I entirely disregard the concept of reality and my consciousness becomes the map. It's a sort of "stream-of-consciousness" experience, if you are familiar with that term.
If you a look at the image to the left, you will further understand what I mean.
Those numbers will rise higher.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: Where did you learn mapping for Left 4 Dead 2?
A: I started using the Valve Wiki as my resource for the basics.

As for the more advanced "techniques", that's a bit tricky to answer. What do you consider "advanced", and what do you consider "techniques"? Yes, it's important to define these early on so that I don't confuse you. So that being said, let's just assume we mean "advanced techniques" in a general manner.

There are certainly articles with instructions on how to implement one part of an advanced mechanic/element/technique. It's rather a matter of understanding how to string these ideas together and being creative with them. One must use in-depth, analytical improvisation when implementing complexual gameplay elements.

Let me be clear though; there's simply no way I could have known how to incorporate certain elements on my own. Rectus, my 'mentor', was willing to answer my questions along the way.

He is a very experienced mapper (pretty much experienced in everything computer science related, honestly) and was beyond useful when it came to hands-on questions. Thanks to him, my map currently has the most gameplay value I can possibly give it. Other mappers contributed to my knowledge of mapping, including AlwaysToast, Roflmahwafflz, and

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: When modding/mapping, what tools do you use?
A: Varying from mod to mod, the software that I use include Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools' Hammer Editor, Inkscape, Audacity, Blender, Notepad++, and Crowbar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: Why did you create the FNaF map?
A: The main motive was simply; opportunity. Fascinated with the meticulous lore and art style of Five Nights At Freddy's, I combined the passion and the popular theme to produce a map. And it did very well.

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=361216976

Even though there are maps that have plenty of more subscribers, my map most defintely opened up the gates of opportunity. Videos were quickly blowing up on YouTube and plenty of people voiced their general positive impressions of the map. And, at some point, Vanoss played it accompanied by the millions of viewers who saw the map.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Will you create more maps?
A: I want to create so many more maps, actual full-fledged campaigns. I'm hoping that seeing my name will lead others to trust the quality of the map even more. At the time of writing this, had I been more involved in the PC community at the time, I would have most likely created numerous L4D2 campaigns by now. I do have ideas (not FNaF related), however, time is valuable nowadays.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: How did you start out? Did you have any prior experience with mapping?
A: To be fair, I started out creating maps in Halo 3. (Not the most advanced "software", but it was still something to creatively express my ideas.) Forging in Halo 3 was one of my main hobbies back in the day (and probably made more than 50% of my playtime in Halo 3). It didn't really get me anywhere in terms of being "renowned", but nonetheless, I've formed some of the best memories with family and friends with the maps that I've created.

After Halo 3, (before Left 4 Dead 2) I've also mapped in Mirror's Edge. Combining mapping in a free running/parkour game, a passionate genre of mine, is equivalent to that of copulation.
To be honest, when I first opened the mapping software for Mirror's Edge, I was intimidated by the interface. I gave up immediately. It looked too complex and too much for me to handle. (It was Unreal Editor by the way. An extremely outdated version at the time.) It wasn't until one day, it hit me. If others can do it, why can't I? And so I took on the challenge of using a professional map developing software:

Then FNaF and Left 4 Dead 2 comes in. Kinda. Before FNaF even came into existence, I tried making my own L4D2 campaign. I tried for a few hours but gave up just thinking it was too complicated for me. Then FNaF and L4D2 come in. I tried the map editor again. Decided to keep going. Yup.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: How about plans for more mods?
A: Definitely. It's something I'd like to keep persuing, even if it means learning new software to accomplish said mod. But again, you know, life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: So what do you do outside of modding?
A: It's a secret to everyone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Do you take requests?
A: It depends on:
  • The size of the project
  • How much time I have
  • If, any, amount of contribution compensates for lack of time
Even then, feel free to state requests even if it seems outlandish! All ideas intrigue me.
Q: Advice for modders, or those considering modding?
A: Don't give up. Have patience. You can do it.
Q. Who are you?
A.You mean, what am I? To simply put it, I am pants on shoulders. (No joke)
Q. What addons do you make?
A. I mainly make survivor replacements. For example, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spider-Man. I sometimes work on other things, like the Spongebob Medpack and the Batmobile.
Q. What got you into modding?
A. The workshop. Seeing that everyone else could make really cool addons, I thought, "OH MY GOD, I WANT TO DO IT TOO!" So, I spent a lot of time researching, messing around with modding programs, and getting help from three very awesome people: ZeqMacaw, Splinks, and It rubs the lotion on its skin.
Q. Why do you mod?
A. I like seeing people react, using, and having fun with my addons; it's very interesting and funny. I also like seeing my favorite fandoms/characters getting into the game, such as Batman, Nightwing, and Alice.
Q. What else do you do besides modding?
A. I draw (the picture of the girl is my drawing), study programming languages (C++ and Java), play guitar, and do all sorts of other hobbies.
Q. What programs do you use?
A. I use Blender[www.blender.org] for rigging, VTFEdit[nemesis.thewavelength.net] for creating textures, GCFScape[nemesis.thewavelength.net] for taking files out of the game, Notepad++[notepad-plus-plus.org] for editing files, Paint NET[www.getpaint.net] for converting the textures into a certain format, and Crowbar for decompiling the game files and compiling my own.
Q. What advice do you have for beginners?
A. Remember that you aren't always going to understand some concepts quickly and it is indeed, time consuming. So, be sure you get help from us modders, and try to stay motivated to work on your projects. That way, you can make your dream addons come alive, and have loads of fun. :]
Thank you all for using and supporting my mods, and thank you all for reading!
Finally got around to typing this out. Woo!
Q
- Who are you?
A
- My real life, human name is Destin Jonathan Rosenbaum, but my friends call me DJ. I was born Montana, in Hamilton, but raised in Victor, in a rural little place called Middle Bear Creek. I still live there with my family of 6 (including myself): Mom and Dad, 2 brothers, and my younger sister. Although, we plan to move soon to a really awesome looking property in Wisconsin, I am very excited.
In person, I consider myself to be very shy, as I tend to squeak away from large crowds, but I love to nerdout about my favorite video games, and I can talk about any game for days. I like to play any style of video game, but my favorite kinds are Co-Op action games like L4D2 or PAYDAY. I also love to play board games, primarily Dungeons & Dragons and Arkham Horror. I listen to music, all day -- everyday, and I listen to a very wide selection of genres, ranging from Metal to Classical and anything in between. My favorite bands are: In Flames, Sabaton, Perturbator, Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch... But you can catch me listening to Journey, Mozart, or even Susan Boyle. My favorite movie is "Murder On the Orient Express"... I also drink, at least, 3 cups of protein coffee everyday... Fun Fact!
Q
- Why are you called MountainMan?
A
- Ah, well, my brothers gave me the nickname because they were born in Nevada and California. We poked fun at each other about our birthplaces with nicknames, once, and it stuck. I also go by: DJ Montana, Montana, and the Montana Mountain Man. I still have not decided which one I prefer, yet.
Q
- When did you start modding?
A
- My very first time modding anything, was way back when, (I don't remember exactly when), I got my first Steam game, Left 4 Dead 2, and started downloading mods from L4DMaps (now known as Gamemaps). I downloaded a random mod that changed the shirt for Ellis, and I bounced around the internet on how to edit the VTFs, and I changed the texture to match a shirt of my favorite band "In Flames". I never released the mod, but I know I've got it sitting around on my computer, somewhere.
My modding forte is in texture editing. I use a program called Paint.Net for all my textures. Although, sometimes, if I need a specific overlay, I will occasionally use a website called IPiccy.
Left 4 Dead 2, is not my primary game for modding. It is actually a fun little game about robbery called, Payday 2, and I upload my mods to a site called LastBullet. I also mod other games, very rarely, like Don't Starve Together and Killing Floor.
Well, that's me. Thanks for stopping by to read this, and thanks to all fellow modders for inviting me and sharing their stories. Cheers.
Zetnus
Q: How did it start?
Q: What’s your first mod?
Q: How did you get into modding?
My story starts somewhere very different. My initial claim to fame was producing random map scripts for Age of Empires II. The Steam re-release of that game happened to coincide with when I had a lot of free time and that’s when I made and released my first maps and mods. Since this guide is about L4D2, I’m not going to go into any more details about this, but if you happen to also be a fan of Age II HD, do check out my workshop items for that game.
So … onward to L4D2. My first item was a map, not a mod. I started out by sinking 100+ hours into a custom campaign that I ended up abandoning in favor of a much simpler survival map:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=323763662
So, I guess you could say I’m a mapper turned modder. That’s because modding isn’t as big of a time commitment. Mapping is a bottomless pit that you can sink hundreds of hours of free time into without being anywhere near a finished product.
Q: So what was your first actual mod for L4D2?
This:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=441857543
In retrospect it’s kind of crap.
Nowadays I am able to make something that looks more like this:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=884356570
From there I went on to make various other gender-swapped special infected mods. I also started making Zoey mods and some other survivor mods. Many of those Zoey mods were merged into one giant project: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=737510918
Q: Why do you make mods (for L4D2)?
I don’t really know :P
I guess it’s a nice hobby to have and I feel like I’m helping people with my creativity. I like L4D2 not because it’s a zombie game (I’m not really a fan of the zombie genre), but because it’s a great game for encouraging cooperation and teamwork. I’m mainly a versus player, hence why my modding started out being infected mods, not survivor mods.
Actually who am I kidding ... I do this as form of procrastination :P
Q: Who taught you modding/mapping?
Me. With trial and lots of error, and with the help of guides I found online, such as ZeqMacaw's Modding a Left 4 Dead 2 Survivor[sites.google.com]. Fun fact – I used that guide to produce my very first mod by adapting it to replace the hunter with a slightly modified version of itself. I literally taught myself the basics of Blender just to make that first mod; I had never done any 3D modeling before then.
Mapping I learned from the L4D2 Level Creation Wiki and TopHATTwaffle’s videos[www.tophattwaffle.com].
Q: What tools/programs do you use?
Beware, link dump incoming:
>GCFScape[nemesis.thewavelength.net] – to open vpk files.
>The L4D2 Authoring Tools – to upload addons to the Workshop and to produce maps with Hammer
>VTFEdit[nemesis.thewavelength.net] – for texture work
>Photoshop CS4 – to actually do retexturing. The only non-free tool I use. You can get a free version if you are a student. There are free alternatives as well like Gimp or Paint(dot)net
>BSPSource[github.com] – to decompile maps
>Crowbar – to decompile and recompile models
>Blender[www.blender.org] – for all 3D modeling work
>Notepad++[notepad-plus-plus.org] – to edit text files; mostly qc files from decompiled models
>Audacity[www.audacityteam.org] – to mod sounds
>TUMTaRA – The Ultimate Mod Testing and Reviewing Area
>Google – to find guides and answers to what I need to know
Q: Any advice for aspiring modders?
If you get stuck…
Take apart an existing mod that is similar to what you want to do. Look at the folder structure. Look at the vmts. Decompile the models and look at the qc file. Find out why that one works when yours doesn’t. What have you done differently? Then fix the issue.
If you need a guide…
There are great tutorials for survivor replacement/ custom weapons/ mapping/ many other things. Just search Google and you will find what you need.
Do something unique…
Yes, you could just make another sexy-looking Zoey reskin, but that’s been done before … a lot. Be creative; do something new and exciting. Also, make sure you add good screenshots - presentation goes a long way towards putting you on the road to success.
Q:What type of modder are you?
Ah. Well I mainly do re-texturing and re-modeling of existing models in the game (or of existing mods). I don’t port from other games. Ever. Well maybe if it's a Valve game, but that is the limit.
My focus so far has been mainly making survivor mods and special infected mods.
Two cool discoveries that I made are BodyGroup Randomization (getting random bodygroups for survivors and SI on local servers) and "Mod a Mod 2.0" (make a custom model reskinnable without requiring the reskin artist to include the model itself).
Q: Do you take requests?
Not anymore.
Q: Future plans?
I want to continue improving my common and special infected mods, redo my female jockey and smoker, and eventually do a female charger too.
I would also really like to make a campaign. I have lots of ideas, but only a little bit has actually been done. Who knows if I will actually ever get around to finishing that…
Q: Final thoughts?
Thanks for stopping by!
: How Everything Started?
: I started Mapping long time ago for Zombie Panic Source that was like in 2008/9, then when players start leaving for new games I started to try something new, I started Retexturing and Riping Models from other Games to Garry's Mod using only for my self I made Artworks and Comics.
I wanted to do something for L4D2 and release for the players, I meet this nice person Zetnus, he is now my work partner, as my love of the TV Series The Walking Dead I dicided to work on that as L4D2 Survivors.
Q Who are you? When did you start your modding hobby?
A My steam name or the name i go by on here is Rex, I am a source skin and mod maker. I used to mod and create things for the early unreal engines and goldsrc engines but those were more simple editing. I have been modding games for about as long as I can remember(almost 10 years now)
Q Why did you start modding a game like left 4 dead 2?
A It's simple, after playing the game since it first came out and modding css and other source games for quite awhile I decided I wanted to put my creativity into this game. It has so many more choices and abilities to openly express any sort of ideas that pop up into your head and its exciting when you get to use these when playing with your friends and often times you can mod the game into a whole new experience!
Q What is your favorite part about modding?
A when everything comes together, when i can collaberate with other content creators and they either help me or we work together to create something really great.
Example:
compared to
I was so proud of this when Kichwa helped me with some shaders and really got the gold look to pop out.
Here is one I was real proud of after Lt.Rocky and I worked together to make this guy fully animated:
My favorite thing about modding is simply when everything comes together, and it turns into a skin or mod that I would use for a long time and that I truly enjoy. I have so much fun putting so much of my creativity out there and it is beyond a blast doing it and I hope to continue this for any future valve titles!
N7Legion
I am excited to write my own Q&A for the first time, thanks to the amazing modders allowing me to do it here.
Q: Who are you?
A: My name's N7Legion. I was previously called as "Chuckymore" back then when I first started to create my own steam account.
Q: What brings you into modding?
A: I started off by playing Left 4 Dead (it was my first game, ever) and Garry's Mod (12) after I created my account. Then, Steam launched their own "Steam Workshop", which allowed modders to share their mods to the community and users, to customize their game with mods. This one got me excited that I even wanted to share the community with my own assets too, thus I downloaded Blender and went on reading many articles about source engine in the Valve Developer Wiki. Finally, I started doing something by creating a few survivor models and shared those to the community.
Q: What mods do you do?
A: Mostly survivor models for Left 4 Dead 2 and playermodels/NPC's for Garry's Mod. I have worked on weapons and SWEP's before, but they weren't too interesting for me.
Q: Do you take requests?
A: Yes, usually. Join to my discord server. The link can be found here: https://discord.gg/mDQ4Jft
Read the pinned message before you request something.
Q: Do you take commissions?
A: Definitely. I even take an artwork as a commission.
Q: Why aren't you posting something, publish more mods frequently?
A: I am not a full-time modder and neither is modding a job for me. I have other things to care of. Time is precious.
Q: Can you teach me how to use Blender? Or how to mod stuff?
A: Yes. Again, join to my discord server. Link's above.
Q: Is there any reason why you'd ignore me about my friend requests?
A: I am usually a nice guy, but I have encountered way too many people, who were just annoying to me, therefor I don't accept any random friend requests, even if your steam account level is higher than me.
Q: Why aren't you responding towards my comment on your workshop page?
A: I usually unsubscribe myself, so that I won't get any notifications by them. Blame the GMod community on this one.
Q: Have you ever modded other games with different engines?
A: Yes, I did. Starting off with Unreal Engine, MT Framework, Unity and some other game engines.
Q: What do you hate about modding?
A: Rigging fingers and doing shape keys (Blender).
Tööttieläin
Hello. I was kindly invited to write my introduction here.
I'm Tööttieläin. Hobbyist 3d-modeler, texture artist and sort of animator. You can call me Töötti for short.
Q: How did you get into modding?
A: My interest in modding goes back to 2011 or 2012. At the time I had some very big plans for Skyrim that never came to fruition. That was when I began to learn creating models in Blender (version 2.62 at the time)
My modding in L4D2 really began in 2016, when my application to university was rejected (I didn’t even get into entrance exams). After that I started delivering mail and really began looking into modding. I chose L4D2, because at the time it was the game I played the most.
I googled for tutorials and it came up with tutorial for compiling first person models (tutorial made by Arby26). Other tutorials and sites I found were Youtube tutorial for making rig for first person animations (also by Arby), ZeqMacaw’s collection of modding tutorials and Valve Developer wiki.
After about 2 months of trial and error I uploaded my first mod, which was snub-nosed Webley revolver.
Q: What kind of mods do you create?
A: So far I’ve made fairly big collection of replacers for guns and some for survivors. I guess I’ve become mostly known as vintage modder due the fact that huge part of my mods being based around the theme of Film Noir. I’d like to test my skills in creating maps at some point.
Q: What tools do you use?
A: Blender 2.72b, Photoshop Elements 8 and Krita. I create models and bake normal maps in Blender. Photoshop Elements I use for making rest of the textures and tweaking normal map. Krita is mostly used to edit alpha channel, because Elements doesn’t have that feature.
In addition I use VtfEdit, Crowbar and GFCScape.
Q: Do you take requests?
A: Short answer is no.
Modding is part of my free time. Committing to making mod requests would take time from either other things I might want to do or other mods I might want to make. I do value community’s input, though. That’s why I don’t mind people leaving mod/improvement suggestions in comments.
Q: What does “Tööttieläin” mean?
A: It’s something I found from one humor site from internet. It was basically used as title for cute duck pictures and videos. It has no real translation in English (or more like, the literal translation would be so asinine I won’t even bother trying to translate it), but closest meaning behind it would probably be either “duckling” or “baby duck”. I continued the “tradition” with my profile images, which mostly have been different kind of birds. The only exception is the Photoshopped platypus that has been representing me for some time now.
Q: Anything else?
A: I’d like to thank everyone who has downloaded/used/liked/followed my mods and helped me in making them.
As for ending I’ll leave some links that beginner modders will hopefully find as useful as I did:
мяFunreal
Q: Who are you?
A: I am MrFunreal. Some just call me Funreal, others prefer to use insults instead.
I was born in Switzerland in 1995 and have not died yet.
Q: Why are you so unfriendly?
A: It is not that I am unfriendly. I just don't sugarcoat anything I say and say everything exactly as I mean it. More often than not that blunt directness is picked up as unfriendliness.
Q: Why do you mod?
A: Mostly to spend my time because I am bored, but also to see what i could possibly pull off.
Q: What do you mod?
A: A bit of everything really.
I have made Weapons, Survivors, Special Infected, Common Infected, HUD modifications, Sounds, Music, Skyboxes, Particles, Maps, Scripts, Soundscapes, Menu backgrounds, Jimmy Gibbs' Cars...
By now I modified every type of thing you can in L4D2, so I consider myself a Jack of All Trades.
Q: How did you start modding?
A: It all started when I met Doktor Haus back on "Left4Deadmaps", added him as a friend and then joined the Dead 4 Mods group.
Then I met the rest of the crew which mostly consisted of ZecMacaw, K1chwa and Splinks.
They taught me how to make a melee weapon mod and eventually with their help and trial and error i pulled that off. Then most of the stuff i learned after that was self taught by watching a lot of Blender, Hammer, and Photoshop tutorials and smashed all that knowledge together
Q: What are you most proud of?
A: My mod testing maps bundled up as "The Ultimate Mod Testing and Reviewing Area", TUMTaRA for short.
