Startroid: Booster Techs

Description
Speed Booster has returned.

This mod adds the Speed Booster, Mini Booster, and Blue Suit to the game.

It is standalone and does not require any other mods.

Speed Booster

To use Speed Booster, double tap left or right while on the ground. You will begin sprinting and accelerate to a maximum velocity. When at maximum velocity, crouch to store all of your speed energy temporarily.

With this speed energy stored, jump into the air and double tap left, right, or up to Shinespark in that direction. Shinesparking consumes a larger amount of energy and sends you flying in the direction you chose, until you run out of energy or reach a wall.

If you shinespark horizontally into a slope while holding the direction you're moving in, you will swap back to a speed boost at full speed, allowing you to smoothly maintain momentum. It costs 32 cards to unlock.

Mini Booster

The Mini Booster is a more agile version of Speed Booster. Since normal boosting requires a lot of distance and speed to shinespark, it is better suited for longer travels and flatter areas.

Mini Booster requires less distance to reach max speed, and the ability to change directions mid-spark. However, it is slower, and consumes more energy to use, reducing its effectiveness for longer travel. It costs 16 cards to unlock.

Blue Suit

Blue Suit was a glitch in Super Metroid in which the player kills a boss with a shinespark, resulting in a glitched version of shinespark always being applied, allowing you to shinespark whether or not you had speed boosted.

Now, Blue Suit is an expensive version of speed booster that takes a lot more energy to use, but allows you to shinespark and speed boost instantly. It constantly applies a blue glow to your character. It costs 64 cards to unlock, putting it at around end-game tier.

How to unlock the techs and get them to show up in the tech console:

If you're using a new character, these techs will appear directly after you complete the mission in the outpost that rewards the Dash tech.

If you're using an existing character, make yourself admin with the command "/admin", then make these techs available to purchase with "/maketechavailable [Name]" where [Name] can be substituted with speedbooster, minibooster, or bluesuit.

Features I would like to add in the future, but currently do not have the ability to do so:

* Diagonal shinesparking

* Distortion Sphere shinesparking

* Block-breaking abilities to both speedbooster and shinespark

If you're a modder and would be able to give some pointers/tips for adding these features, it would greatly improve chances that these features are added and the speed of their implementation. Thank you!

Features I'll might add in the future, if requested:

* Alternate shinespark sounds/ability to mute shinespark

* Other potential feedback, but no guarantees ;]

REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR SAVES BEFORE USING THIS MOD.

Save game location:
Back up storage
[Drive]:\Steam\steamapps\common\Starbound\storage

Compatible mods:

Frackin' Universe (I built this mod while playing FU, but it's not needed) should be fine.

Most likely any other mod that doesn't modify the tech station (New techs should be fine)

Mods that change the Dash or Sprint MIGHT be incompatible. Use at your own risk! Should be fine.

Update log

v1.1 Released 9/24/21:

-- Reduced volume of all speedbooster sounds

-- Jumping tech and Special tech (Distortion sphere, etc.) can now be used while speedboosting and shinesparking. This means you can jump during the sprint, and even speedboost and shinespark with the distortion sphere!

Note: In order to speedboost with the distortion sphere, you must begin the dash before you transform. You can 'crouch' to store the energy, but you must exit the sphere in order to begin the shinespark (Sorry, this is just how the sphere is built. I can't change that without breaking compatability with other things). After shinesparking, you can transform back into the sphere again.

You can use ANY tech now while speedboosting/shinesparking. This is fun, but be careful with techs other than jumps and spheres. I have no idea how other modded techs will interact with this, so some strange things might happen which could result in breaking things. Enjoy, but be warned ;]

Any plans on another mod?

Yup, I just finished the next mod actually! It's the second mod in my Startroid project, called Beams & Missiles.

Please kindly consider supporting me!

If you enjoyed this mod and are excited for other Starbound-related mods that I'm working on, please consider donating to my patreon (https://www.patreon.com/sephirothphoenix?fan_landing=true).

This will help me spend more time and effort working on mods so they are released faster, and with higher quality. I appreciate any and all support <3

I have a small request? Could you please make it possible to cancel out of a shinespark? For instance, if I press the jump button, the shinespark cancels - regardless of whereve I travel with it? I have that blue suit (which is actually just white). Any option to make it just subtle blue pulsating, or remove it altogether? It's not nice when ones character is just a 75% opaque solid white color, lol. Thanks man. Hope your year ahead is real nice.

Solid suggestions @Darkmega! I do wish to do another update to this mod when I get the time again, there's definitely some issues with the mod and places where I could improve it.

I do agree that Starbound's terrain does not lend itself well to shinespark in general. I've also wanted the idea of breaking blocks for worlds as a fun tool.

part 2: also, if you're already going fast from say launching yourself and momentum or some other form of movement boost, maybe you can re-engage speed by just double tapping again in midair to turn back on the acceleration and re-transition back into speed booster to repeat the cycle? even if it's just to allow a midair trigger so you don't have to be fully grounded to turn it on in the first place. That would be really good.

Further, some kind of damage to foes based on defense level when booster is fully active or protection from foes+damage while sparking could be a decent idea also (obviously diminished in micro-booster and amplified in blue suit) and a non-block destructive blast upon colliding with a solid surface aswell that stops the shinespark and hence energy drain so you don't keep flying in place would further make this real good.

part 1: G'day. would I be able to maybe suggest a control change and functionality upgrade for starbound for these techs? I say this because starbound is a game with wider ranges of movement and less very obvious locations for application for this tech, so it needs some "flexibility" to it.

By this I mean. Boost should maybe build up faster but not be quite as speedy across the board.
Shinespark should be chargeable by pressing down while grounded like usual.

but then when you double tap again to initiate it, can you make it able to go in towards the mouse? like the tracer dash ability here from the workshop but more straight and constant once it engages? you could reverse engineer it perhaps? just slightly less zippy/instant.

tracer dash to look at for your directional shinesparking needs: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=734325897

If you want the Speed Booster sound effect to use, I recommend getting the practice romhack, going to the Speed Booster room in Norfair (pretty sure you might be able to teleport there, either way it's actually not that difficult to get), recording the game in video form, and then using the Speed Booster there. There might be some rocky lava sound effects or whatever, but it's the best way to get the sound effect.

(NOTE: Use save states when doing so.)

Perhaps not always practical, but I feel like it's especially necessary with the mini booster... downward shinespark? I find myself unable to break out of a shinespark, and if I miss a low wall I kinda' have to awkwardly hover over it until my energy runs out. Also see a lot more use out of it for limiting falling momentum for reaching lower areas, being a safer alternative to pulse jump techs for preventing fall damage.

All effects of the speed boosters stay active if you beam up. I did something here where I beamed back to the ship during shinespark and the sound effect kept playing until I shinesparked again and then stopped. There could be something else on the script saying that if speed = 0, set all effects to false.
