1. Starting Island
Section Recommendations
Instead of drawing up a whole list of pros and cons for optimising gameplay, here's my recommended setup with things that become available at this section of gameplay:
  • (Melee) Weapon[aground.fandom.com] upgrades in order of availability: stone axe → rusty axe → iron sword/steel axe → steel sword → ancient axe
  • To mine[aground.fandom.com] through stone, upgrade to a metal pick (iron/steel). Sand cannot be broken through (yet). Blackstone can never be mined out.
  • A number of entities can be captured and equipped, thus providing benefits to the player. Here are some especially helpful ones that become available at this stage of gameplay.

  • Consumables to keep on hand for stamina and health respectively, again ordered according to availability: berries + meat → apples/pumpkin + steak → pie + hamburger/omelette → pizza/cheeseburger or dragonblood
  • Cows produce more of the same resources that pigs give (meat, milk and fertilizer).
  • Expand farm as soon as possible by building something(a field specifically?) next to the mountain. Hold shift while moving to place more precisely. The farmer will then give you some sugar seeds, which will be useful for making candy apples/cakes for +++ stamina.
  • Wood is a renewable resource. Use it instead of coal for fueling things. Save coal for making steel.

Underground
Whilst digging around, entrances to caves may be revealed. Apart from the Golem Factory Cave, these are randomly placed, so some scouting effort will be required. They are also optional(?) but provide farmable(?) resources.
  • Golem Factory Cave
    Located directly below the Mountain, left of the Dragon Lair (115,94). Access requires an Earth Gem which will be obtained after visiting the Eastern Island. See Section 1-2-3.
  • Halloween Cave
    Located at depth 52, has 1 fire boar, pumpkins(?), 1 pumpkin seed and Jack-o-Lanterns.

  • Gold Golem/Ore Cave
    Located at depth 62 and changes at every entry, thus providing an endless supply of resources (quartz, coal, diamond, gold, and iron).
    This cave also contains a randomly located spirit pillar which gives the transmute gold recipe, as well as a chest near the bottom which contains Titanium which will be used in section 2: Sunset Haven.
  • Yeti Cave
    Located at depth 82, has 4 yetis, ice bushes, and chests with Ice Arrows and 1 Enchanted Shield.
  • Fire Cave
    Located at depth 92, has cockatrices on the lower floor, fire boars and a chest containing 1 Fire Gem on the upper floor.

Other Achievements
  • Shiny Shiny is achieved by simply mining a diamond

Next
Once these quests are completed, use(Z) the boat at the dock and travel to the left towards Sunset Haven. You can also choose, travel right to the Eastern Island via the Dragon Lair and see the relevant content in section 3. In either case, we will be returning to the starting Island later in the game for a couple of quests from the Alchemist and the player(Self).
2. Sunset Haven
Accessed via Boat from Starting Island. Take care not to sink into the Whirlpool[aground.fandom.com] on the way to Sunset Haven unless you want to visit the other side of the planet.

Section Recommendations
  • (Melee) Weapon upgrades: ancient axe → chainsaw
  • Ultrapack (or whatever backpack equipped) → Jetpack
  • To dig through western stone and desert dirt, upgrade to drill. Collect as much oil (instead of coal) for fueling the power station that recharges batteries.
  • Visit the Mechanic to repair items.
  • The tent is a cheap alternative to saving at the Inn, but breaks after 5 uses.
  • Excess batteries are a good source of income. More cost-efficient to sell empty batteries.

  • Fisherman[aground.fandom.com]
    • Finding Peri
      Tip: Don't waste stamina chasing the cat until there are 3 toothfish in your inventory
  • Mechanic[aground.fandom.com]
    • Fix Power Plant - Power Up Power Up
      3 sources of Titanium: treasure chests underground of Sunset Haven (depth 10-29), nighttime merchant aka Lurker, and a treasure chest in Starting Island's Golem Cave
    • Build Factory -  Industrialize Industrialize
      Note: to receive quest, requires battery in inventory
    • Build Elevator - Going Up? Going Up?
    • Convince the Mirrows - This quest will only be given after finding the hidden entrance to the ship's Logroom (which is located below the entrance to the Mirrows), and reading all the ship logs here to contributes to The Full Story achievement, which will not be earned until after completing this quest. It's a bit unclear in-game how to go about completing this quest, but it involves going to the Eastern Island (section 3). As such, this quest's related achievement is in section 1-2-3. Feel free to equip the caged Diode Wolf found at the end of the hallways as a familiar.
      Tip: enemies don't respawn on the Crashed Colony Ship, so flank either side with fences to create a safe haven.

    • Confront the Mirrows - This boss fight is optional, and I'd personally recommend holding off fighting the Mirrows until better weapons are obtained, but it is very difficult. As such, this quest's related achievement is in section 1-2-3.

    • Colony Ship Logroom, has diode wolves and cyborgs with heavy guns patrolling the hallways. This area contains 12 computer panels with lore and a caged Diode Wolf for the player to take.

  • Minotaur Labyrinth is best accessed later, unless one is eager for death.
  • Water Cave is accessed later in section 4.

Next
Craft a Chainsaw (using 2 Silicon, 4 Steel Bars, 2 Refined Oil) in the Factory - this will be used to get the Techno Mage achievement later.
We will be returning to Sunset Haven later for quests from the Fisherman, Mechanic, and the Mirrows. For now, travel right to the Eastern Island to obtain better gear.

LATER when back, obtain 3 horns (purchased from Lurker or dropped from Minotaurs in their Maze), as these will be needed later to forge a dragon sword for the Dragon Master achievement.
3. Eastern Island
Accessed by flying a dragon east from the Starting Island, thus granting Dragon Tamer Dragon Tamer
Upgrade to Queen Drill

Section Recommendations
  • Weapon → dragonflame, Armour → dragon
  • Upgrade to a wyrm drill by using an Alter Gem on a captured Wyrm. Bedrock, Titanium and Uranium here cannot be mined until late game.
  • No new familiars at this stage, as we have yet to obtain better trapping tools/nets.
  • Pies are readily available once the Synthesizer is activated.

Storyline Achievements
Quests for the Eastern Island are provided by the Alchemist
  • Wyrm Hive - Queenslayer Queenslayer
  • Spirit Power - Spirit gems can captures and transforms spirits into gems, of which there exists 5 element types: fire, water, earth, ice, and plant. The Eastern Island is home to the Fire, Water, Ice and Plant spirits, which can be found at specific areas or in the day/at night.
    • Activating the Synthesizer, which is equivalent to a Kitchen, requires a water gem and awards Synthetic Steak Synthetic Steak.
      Tip: With enough Focus Gems for fuel, it is now more efficient to use the Synthesizer to 'cook' Pies and Pancakes, as they require 1 Ice Berries, and 1 Bread + 2 Ice Berries respectively. 4 Focus Gems can be made from 1 Diamond in the Forge.
    • Activating an enchanter called the Forge requires a fire gem and awards Forging Ahead Forging Ahead.
      • Many items can be enchanted[aground.fandom.com], but trial-and-error crafting has to be done to discover most recipes. Other recipes can be discovered by activating Pillars whilst having spirit-sight.
        Enchant a chainsaw to discover the hidden achievement Techno Mage Techno Mage
  • Wyrm Research - experiment with Alter Gems[aground.fandom.com] and transform items! (9 transformable items, 6 available at this stage of gameplay, of which 2 don't require Alter Gems to transform). Obtain Dragon Armor for "Convince the Mirrows" quest, and 2 Dragon weapons for the Dragon Master achievement later.
  • Secret Potion - only available on April 1 (?) MIGHT MOVE TO ANOTHER SECTION WITH INK ITEM

    The Wyrm Tunnels[aground.fandom.com] are accessible after defeating the Wyrm Queen and is a maze connecting to other locations or dungeons.
  • Colosseum
    Located at depth 112, visible only with spirit-sight. The Beastmaster[aground.fandom.com] here allows players to have simulated boss battles with equipment provided, and in turn rewards players with Spirit Points that can be redeemed for items from the Beastmaster.
  • Death's Door
    Located at depth 185, visible only with spirit-sight, it is an ever-changing dungeon that should(?) be accessed later.

Next
Take a few Spirit Gems and head back to the Starting Island, either by going west via Dragon, or through 4 of the Wyrm Tunnels' 23 exits that leads to the Island.
1-2-3. Revisited
This section of the guide basically involved some clean-up around the first 3 islands so that we can progress through the game.

1. Starting Island
  • Elementary Elementary is achieved by capturing a spirit of every element.
    • Using a Spirit Gem, capture an earth spirit.
    • In the Halloween Cave, capture the ghost.
  • Golemech[aground.fandom.com]
    1. Bring along 5 diamonds
    2. Use the Earth Gem to activate the Golem Factory Cave
    3. Defeat Golemech to achieve Statue Smasher Statue Smasher

      Hide in the alcove at the top-right of the cave until you can strike it from behind, preferably with water or plant weapons. Run back up to avoid the laser eye attack. Familiars are useful here.
    4. Craft Earth Hammer: 5 diamonds + 1 blood gem from Golemech
      Note: building another Golemech disables the Golem factory until it is defeated.
    Most items here require blood gems to craft - these are plentiful in the grounds of Eastern Island, so no need to stinge on crafting more equipment, although there are none to recommend at this point. Maybe earth armour for +1 armour and reflect 1 dmg. Req 1 earth gem. megagolemech key also req. 1 earth gem.

2. Sunset Haven

  • Convince/Confront the Mirrows
    • Obtain Dragon Armor by using an Alter Gem on an Adult Dragon
    • Talk to the Mechanic to trigger the cutscene which transports you to the Mirrow's Surgery Lab. While in the lab,
      • read the 2 ship logs to achieve The Full Story The Full Story.
      • the left door leads to the ship's control room. There, interacting with the middle-left panel (the rest are broken) triggers a cutscene explaining some lore.
      • You may interact with the Surgery Table to install Cyborg gear, however, I would recommend putting this off for later, not only because there are individually better equipment soon available, but also because the entire Cyborg set is needed for the achievement.
    In either scenario, Human Testing Human Testing will be achieved once you've talked to the Innkeeper, and the Mirrowsquestline, also known as the Science path, is now unlocked. (CHANGE) Their quests brings the player west towards The Heights, whose contents are covered in section 4. For now, return to the Eastern Island.
  • The Mirrows[aground.fandom.com]
    • Water Cave
      There are 2 ways of finding the cave (?VERIFY 1st way). One is by excavating the dirt around the western underground area for a cave entrance. The second, easier way, is to dive off the western shore and head towards the depths, where you'll soon find an opening on the right.
    • Ship Parts - Submersive Submersive
      Talk to the Mechanic after receiving this quest - she'll give blueprints for the House upgrade (for the Starting Island's Hut) and the House's Kitchen upgrade. HOUSE GIVES REMODELING ACHIEVEMENT. New house and kitchen needs a generator or battery unit to be powered. New kitchen offers ice cream for 450 stamina. Once get rice and cooking oil, switch to FRIED RICE for 50% stamina restored, fried eel for 100% health. Talk again to Mechanic to get BUILD COM STATION QUEST
    • After building the sub, explore the western waters more. Read any life pod logs to get the hidden achievement Salvager Salvager
    • INK IS FOUND UNDERWATER from defeating squids!! collect power cores too for next quest?
    • upon returning with hi-tech parts, upgrade factory, can build airport. upgraded factory means can craft advanced nets, so can capture diode wolves, mecha wyrms, amethyst golems, panther (shadow cat), crawler, icer, cockatrice, fire boar, and minotaur. build SUV for Off-roading achievement.
    • Repair Escort Ship
      • Given only after finding the ship crash site??

3. Eastern Island
  • Magical Energy - Defeat The Old One[aground.fandom.com] to achieve Face the Enemy Face the Enemy. Note that the Alchemist dies if he fights her for you.

    Tip: The game's intended weapon of choice is the Earth Hammer, obtained after defeating Golemech on the Starting Island. Otherwise, use guns, bows, or fire swords.
    Once Old One is defeated, Evolution Chamber is unlocked. Here, can craft Evolution Gems and Evolution seeds. Uses Focus Gems as fuel.

Next
If the science path excites you, go west all the way until The Heights and to section 4. If the magic path is more appealing, head east to Cultivator Island and section 5.
4. The Heights
Accessed via ??? need to pass through BOSS Kraken. Maybe go kill Minotaurs first bc lower HP?
