How to use continues in arcade mode
By &Olga
tl;dr: Hold Start immediately after you die, before the score screen.

Bubble Bobble was a pretty greedy arcade game -- it wouldn't let you continue even if you had credits left over. Lose all your lives? Back to the title screen you go! A hidden continue feature does exist, however, and this guide shows you how it works.

Have enough Credits
In order to use continues, you will need to have some credits left over. Note that starting the game uses one up, so have at least two. But better yet, just mash the button for a bit. It's free!

You can even add credits during gameplay. Just press the button while playing.

To know if you're out of usable credits, look at the top right of the game screen. If it says "PUSH 2P", you're fine.

If it says "INSERT COIN", you are out of credits already. Mash the button some more! Note that the dragon on the right will keep saying "PUSH 2P" even if you run out. Make sure you look at the corner.

Lose all your lives
This part is easy. Bubble Bobble is a pretty hard game, after all.

Hold Start when you die
Whenever you lose your final life, immediately hold down whatever keybind the game shows you on the top-right for Start. You may even start holding the button down before you die, if you feel like it's about to happen. Point is, before the score screen shows up, this button needs to be held down.

If done right, you'll get 3 more lives, and you'll be able to continue playing right from where you died.

If you find it difficult to keep track of how many lives you have left to determine whether to hold Start or not, just get in the habit of holding down Start every time you die. There are no side effects from doing that. The button is only used to continue playing.
A note on 2-player mode
If you are playing local co-op, the rules for continuing are a bit different. Player 2 can continue as long as Player 1 is alive, and Player 1 can continue as long as Player 2 is alive. Just press Start at any time on the dead player's controller. You still need to have enough credits.
