Introduction
IMPORTANT: Before you read this guide make sure you DO NOT have any mods!
With the first experimental test release of Multiplayer, we ask for your understanding that we cannot provide support for making mods work on your server.

If the most common solutions didn't fix your problem, share your game logs in the commend section so we can check for any errors.
-Go to C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid
-Open the console.txt
-Copy everything from there to https://pastebin.com/
-Click “Create a new paste”
-Share the website link of the new paste here.
How to update server?
If you installed the server through Steamcmd, enter the following command (in Steamcmd):
app_update 380870 validate

For a test branch: app_update 380870 -testbranchhere validate



If the server was installed by your hoster, then update it through the hosting website.
[DEDICATED] I can join my server as an admin, other players can not! Help!
First steps:
- Make sure you have your ports forwarded and unblocked in your firewall (16261, 8766, 8767)
- Disable your Antivirus, as some of them can block any incoming connections.
- If none of the above work, check with your internet service provider if you have a public IP assigned to you, some providers do not assign public IPs and thus do not allow server hosting on such machines.
[DEDICATED] My server isn't showing up!
First steps:
- Set your server to public in the INI file.
- Make sure you have your ports forwarded and unblocked in your firewall (16261, 8766, 8767)
- Disable your Antivirus, as some of them can block any incoming connections.
- If none of the above work, check with your internet service provider if you have a public IP assigned to you, some providers do not assign public IPs and thus do not allow server hosting on such machines.
My players receive an error: File doesn't exists on the server.
If the path in their error looks like this:

media / lua / server / RecordedMedia / ISRecMediaAction.lua

D:\PC name\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\lua\server\Recorded media\IsRecMediaAction.lua

Then you (as a hoster) have to delete the 'lua' folder and verify game files.
How to transfer files from a local server to a dedicated one ?
Simply move the whole "Zomboid" folder located on your local computer to the same directory in the Dedicated server. Unfortunately, only server maps can be transferred and not player characters, as the Dedicated server and Coop servers use different methods of saving the characters.
How to fix "OutOfMemoryError"?
- Check your computer specifications and make sure you have enough RAM to host the server, your PC needs some RAM to be able to run by itself, the game needs at least 2GB RAM and the server itself needs at least 3GB. If you have less than 8GB RAM you will most likely not be able to host a server.
- Make sure to increase the RAM allocation to the server if it is constantly running out of RAM, either by editing the .bat file or allocating it through the Host menu if you are running a co op server.
How to fix "Failed to establish p2p" ?
- This is a general connection issue, try restarting your computer to see if that fixes the connection.
- Additionally, try turning your router off and on again to reset the connection and see if that helps.
How to change the default save dir for MP?
-cachedir command: Use it as your Steam parameter or in your dedicated server .bat file.
example: -cachedir C:\Games
How to spawn items in MP?
[DEDICATED SERVER] - Log in as an admin (the login and PW you created when you first launched your server \ login and PW you receive when you rent a server)

[HOST SERVER] - /setaccesslevel "Your nickname in game" admin
EX: /setaccesslevel "SuperPlayer1" admin

- After becoming admin, use the ESC > Admin menu item spawner to spawn any items you want.
How to fix "No UPnP-enabled Internet gateway found" ?
You must configure port forwarding on your gateway manually in order to make your server accessible from the Internet. This is your main error, you will need to open the necessary Steam and game ports to be able to host, both on your Router and in your firewall.
How to fix "Black box and cones" ? - Map not loading.
Reasons:
- Unstable internet connection between you and the host.
(EX: a player from the US trying to play on a server from EU)
- Low RAM assigned to the server
- General performance issues on the Host or Client PC (slow CPU, Hard Drive)

@Qain I'm a little late but if your friend is trying to join with 127.0.0.1 then it will not work. That is a loop back address and will only work if the server is hosted on the same machine. Your fried will need your public IP address to connect. You can find it on ipchicken.com or you can just google "what is my IP".

I want to point out that this guide says some ISPs do not provide a public IP address. You can not connect to the internet without a public IP. All routers provided by your ISP WILL have a public IP assigned and you can find it through either method I stated above. The ONLY reason you wouldn't is if you are in some crappy HOA or apartment that provides "internet" for you but in reality its just the entire neighborhood/building sharing one single connection. In that case you wouldn't even have access to forward ports since you cant access the main router/firewall. Whoever manages that router/firewall can also watch everything you do online.

I've been hosting an MP server without any issues, but today I tried setting up a dedicated server. I can join locally using 127.0.0.1, but as soon as a friend tries joining in through the internet, he gets no response, and the console for the server shows no attempt being made at logging in.

I've already forwarded the ports, but It's not having an effect.

Any clues?

What ports on which protocols need forwarding for running a dedicated server? I can run local just fine, and had no trouble setting up a dedicated server for a friend whose router was uPnP enabled - but mine is not. I can change settings (ie whitelist on/off, max number of players) and see it reflected in the list of favorites under the "Join" menu (using external static IP address), but am not able to get in - it just stays on the "Getting Server Info" screen till I abort.

when i hit escape while black screen it exits to main menu instantly when its supposed to be showing click here to join

it also does the black thing still when making me make a new character. i justk eep trying till it works or i deleted everything and start over and keep going till it works.

well i thought i fixed it, but when i tried to rehost next day it was making me make another character again, and having isuses i deleted world, so this been happening everytime

i get black screen no text or anything it has audio of loading and stuff but i dont haer anything going on, when i hit escape it shows main menu
it shows mouse cursor with single finger
