Bonded Leather

Description
What is this mod?! What have you done?!
This mod adds the ability to reprocess leather and wool into higher quality versions. It starts off by adding in the ability to create "bonded leather" as an alternative to patchleather, although with more steps and a higher cost. The research branches out into further leather and wool options from there.

The reprocessing options provided by this mod are generally not quick. Additionally, the costs can be prohibitive: chemfuel and neutroamine are common ingredients, with plasteel becoming common at later conversions. Farming animals is likely a more efficient solution. However, for heavily industrialized colonies, this may be a good way of upgrading otherwise useless leathers and wools.

This is an XML-only mod that adds in the following pieces of research:

Bonded leather
* Shred leather at the tailor bench.
* Bond shredded leather at the tailor bench to create bonded leather.

Vegan leather
* Shred plant vegetables at the butcher table to create plant fibers.
* Bond plant fibers at the tailor bench to create vegan leather.

Reproduce leather
* Upgrade bonded leather to plain leather at the tailor bench.
* Convert shredded leather directly to plain leather at the biofuel refinery.

Toughen leather
* Upgrade plain leather to elephant leather at the biofuel refinery.

Penultimate leather
* Upgrade elephant leather to rhinoceros leather at the biofuel refinery.

Enhance wool
* Upgrade cloth to sheep wool at the tailor bench.
* Upgrade wools to alpaca wool at the biofuel refinery.

Ultimate wool
* Upgrade alpaca wool to megasloth wool at the biofuel refinery.

Biomineralized synthread
* Upgrade megasloth wool to synthread at the biofuel refinery.

Ultimate leather
* Combine synthread and rhinoceros leather to produce thrumbofur at the tailor bench.

Important bits
Q: Can I add this to an existing save?
A: Sure.

Q: Can I remove this from a save?
A: I'd recommend destroying all things added by this mod first, so bonded leather, shredded leather, plant fiber, and vegan leather.

Q: Any issues with adding new mods to saves with this mod active?
A: Should not be any issues.

Q: Is this compatible with X mod?
A: Almost certainly! This mod is additive.

Q: Do you have other mods?
A: Why, thank you for asking, hypothetical reader. I have a few:
* Scenario Pawns and Corpses, which allows new backstories and starting corpse options to be added to the scenario editor.
* Corpse Children, a mod that allows pawns with a new trait to create new pawns from the dead as well as steal their body parts, traits, and skills.
* Techprints Are Relics, a mod that turns integrated techprints into relics for the tech-cultists amongst us.

Q: Can I upload scenarios using this mod, can I add this mod to a mod pack, and/or can I create derived mods from this mod?
A: Sure. I'd be interested to hear what you do with it.

I'd believe there is a Refinery equivalent mod out there, Premier. Otherwise, at best, I guess you can make plain leather.

Hello how much of this mod is useable in a medieval only colony? Can you make it compatible with medieval colonies please?
Kayesh  [author] 17 Feb, 2022 @ 12:28pm
@Argemis: definitely! The ideology restriction is what I had in mind for it. But my pawns just like meat too danged much.

( Previously, to get some leather with an unskilled naked pawn I had to rely on random predators hunting big game; as otherwise they eat the prey whole. This was unreliable at best {the map may only have small critters} or totally imposible in certain biomes ).

@Kayesh
Feedback:
The "vegan leather" is useful a "naked & affraid" playthrough with a pawn that is bad at both hunting & taming (fishing does not provide leather/scales), or can not kill animals because of Ideology/trait.

[ A random predator may hunt some big game for you to get some leather from the leftover corpse, but this is unreliable in most biomes and completely undoable on some. ]

Since there is no guarantee of "getting" (buying or stripping) a parka for winter (specially for high latitudes were it may be freezing much sooner); having the option to transform any "starch" food into a facsimile of plastic for a low_quality life_saving garment is why I took this mod.

About the "sadness" mechanics -> It was just an idea.
My hope is that someone else reads it and makes that mod.

@Argamis: glad you like the vegan leather piece! I actually haven't spent much time in-game on vegan leather, so interested in any feedback on it or of course on anything else.

I like the extra sadness mechanics! I'm not planning to bring special mechanics for bonded animal leather into this mod since this mod aims to be pretty down to earth. Just unfortunate that "bonded leather" and "bonded animal leather" sound very similar but represent very different things!

I will add this mod to my 500+ modlist just because of the "Vegan leather" option. Genius!

About the "extra sadness" leather idea : [Requires Ideology DLC]
. In the "altar" (or equivalent), the pawn with the Priest/Moral_guide role performs a ritual using a [still living] bonded animal.

The process destroys the creature and produces generic, low_grade "soulbond_leather" (same ammount as normally obtained from that type of animal, if slaughtered and 100% butchered).

. In crafting recipes, it can only be used to create apparel that must cover the torso (heart), for variants with aditional covered parts (optional) it requires more soulbond_leather.

EFFECT -> Each one (soulbond_leather, torso_covering) item halves (x0.5, rounded up) of the value of each thought from losing bonded animals.

i too thought it was a mod that added leather you could only get from killing bonded animals

not gonna lie, when I saw the title I thought this was a mod adding a special type of leather you could only get by slaughtering bonded animals lol
