Just scroll down to "FPS MOD FIX"

I'm leaving this guide up with the old information as well (below) just in case.

Have fun!
Instructions (Outdated)
According to the Discord, this patch is old and no longer being worked on. There are apparently a lot more improvements with the new method. The old method still works, is a lot simpler, and makes a lot of the terrible FPS bearable, but it's apparently not as good and definitely not as well-supported as the new method.

Backup Your Save Files
Navigate to the following directory and and make a copy of the save.dat file nested a couple levels down. Yes, that extra space is part of the path:
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\CHRONO CROSS THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION\Steam\

Using the Patcher
  1. Go to https://www.nexusmods.com/chronocrosstheradicaldreamersedition/mods/11?tab=files

  2. Download the file "isa FPS Hack - The Patcher" and extract the executable

  3. Run the file "isa FPS Hack.exe"

  4. Check "Create a backup copy of the file"

  5. Click [Select file] and find CHRONOCROSS.exe. You can find it by right-clicking the game in Steam, clicking LOCAL FILES, then clicking [Browse...]

  6. Click [Open] then click [Patch!]

  7. DONE!
You can ignore the "Manual Patching" section if the above steps worked.

Manual Patching
NOTE: Previously, NexusMods blocked the automatic patcher, so consider these instructions outdated unless it happens again.
  1. Before doing anything, find your Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers directory and make a backup of CHRONOCROSS.exe. You can find it By right-clicking the game in Steam, clicking LOCAL FILES, then clicking [Browse...]

  2. Download the utility named Lunar IPS and extract it: https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/240/
(Feel free to malware scan it[www.virustotal.com] if you don't trust it)

  3. Download this mod named "isa FPS Hack - The Patch" and extract the files: https://www.nexusmods.com/chronocrosstheradicaldreamersedition/mods/11?tab=files

  4. Run Lunar IPS.exe from the x64 directory and uncheck "Register File Type"

  5. Click [Apply IPS Patch]

  6. Find the IPS patch that you downloaded from Nexus Mods "isa FPS Hack - The Patch" and select that .ips file

  7. Find the Chrono Cross directory you made a backup in earlier. On the bottom-right, make sure All Files (*.*) is selected or you won't see it

You should be good to go now. Run your game as normal via Steam.
Enjoy!
Credits & Information (Outdated)
This mod was not created by me
All credit goes to Isa#4063

I only wish to spread the word because it helped me enjoy the game at a proper smooth framerate

Note: In the event Square-Enix releases a patch, this may not work anymore and/or you may have to try to apply the patch again. Please join the Moogles & Mods discord[discord.gg] to keep up-to-date.

Have they still not fixed the game to have proper frame rates? I figured you didn't need any of this anymore.

Apparently ISA fix method is busted as of this year and will freeze up on battles (particularly the first encounter). What is the method using SpecialK?

If/when they do make a guide, I'll link it at the top of this one somewhere.

I'm looking at the forum post and it looks like they will make a Steam guide. It also looks like a decent number of people are having problems with things: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/1133760/discussions/0/3273562123579123693/?ctp=14

Feel free to make another guide if it gets in working order. I'll just leave this here for now since I can verify that it works and I finished the game with it.

If you don't care about 60fps, Isa's method is perfectly fine.

Minor issues are the new hd textures might not work or there a 2 frames of menu flickering depending on the values you use, however with Special K you can achieve 60 fps field and battle no issues where as the old Isa's patch injection method and hex editing can only get you above 50 fps.

Kaldaien has implemented Isa's fix with Special K hence why I stated the discord modding community Mog's and Moogle's has moved on towards in favor of Kaldaien's Special K global or local method. You can however still use this old method, but it's no longer really being followed and updated. The pinned section of the discord also has the new guide for implementing this frame pacing fix via Saftle's guide with using Special K with Chrono Cross Radical Dreamers.

That doesn't sound like "moved on," but an alternative solution. I'll check the discord to see what the "minor issues" are. I saw something about item flicker so I'll keep an eye out.

This is actually outdated, we have moved on from Isa's old patch method towards in favor of Kaldaien Special K method to patch out the stutters. The Special K method has also allowed battle and field fps to reach 60 fps albeit there are still some minor hd texture mod glitches getting worked out.

I love the game and played it for 15 hours or more without this and I suffered a bit specially when there were 4 enemies lol. But this made it lovely and I am enjoying the game like I was back in the days playing for hours and hours
