Working Multiplayer and NWN2 Client Extension with Steam

After modding NWN2 all day and trying too fix the issues of the Client extension mod with steam I finally got everything working.

Requirements:
Client extension mod: https://nwn2dev.blob.core.windows.net/nwn2/ClientExtension_Latest.zip
nwn2main.exe from the GoG version (uploaded by me): https://www.dropbox.com/s/a76a5rhepb04fcg/nwn2main.exe?dl=0
Folder location should be: \Steam\steamapps\common\Neverwinter Nights 2
Aside from multiplayer the extension mod fixes various issues like the stuttering camera during movement.

1. Download Client extension mod and extract ClientExtension.hdl and NWLauncher.exe into your NWN2 folder.
2. Go into your game folder and rename your current nwn2main.exe to nwn2main.exe.BAK
3. Download the GoG exe file linked above and drop it into your game folder.
4. Rename your new nwn2main.exe to nwn2main_override.exe
5. Rename NWLauncher.exe to nwn2main.exe
6. Create a new file in your game folder and name it nwncdkey.ini with following content:

[CDKEY] Key1= Key2= Key3=

7. Right click Neverwinter Nights 2 in steam -> manage -> cd keys. Copy and paste them in your nwncdkey.ini file.
8. Launch the game through steam, it should launch without any issues or errors.
9. Click on Multiplayer, type in any username you like in "Bioware community name" and use any password then hit sign in.
10. It will say failed to connect to master server but you should now have access to all the multiplayer options.
11. That's it have fun playing!

Coming back to this to say this: do not follow this guide to the letter like I did. Do not rename the files to contain .exe Doing so will cause a bluescreen.
Simply rename nwn2main to nwn2main.BAK This is an application file and already contains the extension .exe Adding .exe to the filename breaks the application.
Or, well, it did for me.

Steps 2,4, and 5 should reference nwn2main.exe not nw2main.exe . Renaming it incorrectly will cause the game to not launch.

I got to the point where your guide says "it should launch without any issues or errors" (step 8) and it simply doesn't start when I launch through steam. I'm sure I followed your guide to the letter and did everything correctly. I even uninstalled, reinstalled, and repeated the steps in your guide. Game still doesn't start.

However, if I go into the NWN2 folder and run the override.exe then it starts up normally.

To skip the highly annoying delay waiting for the authorization server to tell inform you it is down:

Open up C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

back up the hosts file (just make a copy)

Make sure to open the "hosts" file not anything else or other hosts.name files in Notepad (Maybe open notepad as administrator for some OSes).

Add the following lines to the bottom of the page:

0.0.0.0 nw2master.bioware.com
0.0.0.0 nwn2.master.gamespy.com

Box still appears but no wait click it closed and continue.

My friend purchased the game through GoG recently, I had him get the skywings client extension and follow the instructions to install it. He was able to get the game up and running with multiplayer and connect to servers just fine.

Hmm, well the mod itself should work fine as it was made for the GOG exe file, which is why I'm linking that one. It should work fine as long as you create nwncdkey.ini inside your game folder and fill it with working keys from your gog version.

I love that you made this, trying to get NWN2 multi working has been a long process but never had any luck. Hopefully this will work, but I wanted to ask a quick question.
Do think something like this would work via GOG alone? I have friends I'd love to introduce to NWN2 but since NWN2 is no longer on steam to buy, this kind of solution might not work. Have any ideas or insight?
