When the relations between Consolidation and Aenum Republic escalated and it became clear that a war between the two neighboring states could not be avoided, OPC began to immediately modernize the fleet. Following the Serene that entered service, the Ontosh shipyards put a new generation of destroyers into mass production.

Developed in parallel with Serene, the Defiant project was kept secret and only a small number of people knew about it before the first tests. The first ship, Challenger, was testing new gun systems developed inside the Consolidation when it encountered a large group of pirates. The destruction of real warships demonstrated to the Consolidation Council that the guns developed by CET forces are capable of resisting an enemy outnumbered.

In the future, Challenger, as part of the Consolidation First Defense fleet, acted as the main combat force in the defense of the planet Tarox, after which it was transferred to the newly formed Third Strike Fleet and, in conjunction with other Defiant-class ships, covered the newest Deliverance-class cruisers.

After several years in service, the ship received many improvements to remain effective in the Consolidation-Aenum War. The changes made each time the ships entered the repair dock resulted in the ship changing almost completely both inside and out.
