How to upload
THIS GUIDE IS WRITTEN FOR WINDOWS, BUT COULD BE EASILY ADAPTED FOR MAC OR LINUX

Prep

You have just finished your creation after weeks of work, you're now looking to spruce up that workshop page as much as possible to make it stand out. Many of you are probably thinking a GIF icon will help, and that's why you are here. Let me show you how to upload one.

To begin, you should upload your creation the normal way, make sure you have a static icon you already like, and use that when you upload.

Next create your gif, it should be 512x512 and has a max size of 1MB.

You will need to download SteamCMD and run a script in it.

SteamCMD Website

Create the Script

Once you have downloaded steamCMD it is time to create the script you will run to upload your GIF icon.

Open some sort of text editor, and enter this text:

"workshopitem" { "appid" "573090" "publishedfileid" "[workshop-id]" "previewfile" "[path to gif]" }

Obviously we want to replace the [path to gif] with the file location of the gif you want to upload.

The [workshop-id] can be found in the URL of your workshop upload, for example:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2750349276

So the ID for this example would be 2750349276

Now you are going to save this file not as a .txt, but as a .vdf, the file name doesn't matter.

Run the Script

Now you are going to run SteamCMD.

First thing you will do is login using the line: login [username] [password]

It may ask you for a verification code if you use two-factor authentication.

Next you run the command: workshop_build_item [path to .vdf file you made]

After this you should have a gif icon.

You should logout of SteamCMD and log back into Steam itself to restore functionallity.

Hopefully this quick guide helps explain how to upload a gif icon.
