the hacking or mind control is the only tip i didnt already follow. i generally prioritize stealth to dodge the big attack from flagship stage 2. i have had runs burned by mind control, so i may take these under advisement:)
burst of 5 or more is right on... missiles and bombs are too hit and miss... and miss is bad when it uses ammo... plotting isnt That important... except for the dead end bit... Never walk into a dead end
i actually loled at the zoltan comment... all the zoltans... i have had finished runs with 6 zoltans... they are amazing
For one thing, shields aren't always the best place to hack, it's generally split between piloting, shields, possibly even weapons depending on who you fight.
Drone control is okay, but I would never prioritise it over hacking or cloaking. Doubly so because the drone targeting bug means that defence drones become unreliable when protecting certain ships.
Playing defensively is all well and good, but a proper application of force makes every battle easier.
If you have an enemy ship that has a Combat Drone (fires the fastest) grinding your stats on your crew can be essential. Its good to keep them min-maxed (Best Pilot Best Engines ect) but if I can, I'll fully cross-train my crew. (Make Everyone the best at Everything) Ensures you don't get knee-capped losing one crew member.,
I've made most of these mistakes already, "suicide clone boarding crew" in particular.
The small margin in your favour for good rolls when using trained crew is totally worth it on the hardest difficulty.
