A Guide to the Ports of Aestrin
By TheOriginalMark:-)
It is hard enough as a new sailor to find the island they are looking for without having to search for the port when finally get there. This guide sets out to describe the locations of all the harbours of Sailwind and warn of the navigational hazards you should avoid on entering them. Its also gives details of what is available in the markets of each port.

Occasionally there is a little sightseeing information as well!

I was originally planning this as one guide covering all of Sailwind's ports but Steam did not like the size of it so now it is broken down into three guides by region.

A Guide to the ports of Al`Ankh.
A Guide to the ports of Aestrin.
A Guide to the ports of the Emerald Archipelago.

Please fell free to leave your comments, suggestions or corrections (of which I'm sure there are many). This is my first time creating a guide so try not to be too cruel :-)

Eastwind

A barren rock in the middle of nowhere.

The Harbour

A small harbour in a narrow channel with approaches from the northeast or southweast. When coming in from the southwest keep an eye out for the sand bar on the port side (and equally if departing in that direction). If departing to the northeast try to tie up as close to the southwest end of the short quay as possible to give yourself more time to turn away from the aforementiond sandbar.

Market Place

  • On the quayside a stall selling fish in bulk (Tuna and Salmon) and also raw Salmon Fillets.
  • In the village square there is bulk Iron and Copper to be had and..
  • Bread, barrels of water and Beer, and bottles of same.

You may feel sorry enough for these folk to buy something. Who'd want to live on this barren rock, no trees, not even a blade of grass. They must live on fish and dust!

Exports, Iron, Copper and fish (lots of fish).

Sightseeing
Forget it unless you are a real fan of dust and sand.

Fort Aestrin

The big kahuna of the northern ocean, home to the wealthy elite and an impregnable castle.

The Harbour

The large harbour is on the north of the island with a single rocky peak in the wide approach. Come in from the northeast or northwest as suits, pretty easy entry. The northwesterly approach makes berthing outside the harbour office a little easier as the quay is dog-legged. The Brig (assuming you are not in it) is docked smack in the middle of the long main quay and the harbour office is to the on the shorter dog-leg to the East.

The harbour office.

There is a third way into the bay from the SouthEast but it's pants wetingly scary down a narrow curving gorge and under a bridge. I mean, I guess it's fun when you know what you are doing but I would't suggest trying it until then.

The Market

The large market is located at the angle of the dock partly in a market square but with several stalls dotted along the western side of the dock.

  • Fishing Rods and Hooks.
  • Furniture: Round Stoves,3 types of table, stools and chairs. Shelves (single)) and two types of bed.
  • Bread, Buns and grain in bulk.
  • Cases of Sunspot Fish, raw fish (Simmertails, Salmon, Eel (very filling) and cooked Salmon fillets.
  • Cooked North Fish and Trout and uncooked North Fish, Trout and Black Fin Hunters.
  • Water (by the barrel and the bottle)
  • Ships Chandler selling: Quadrants, Chip Log (ornate version), Compass, Lamps (the best type) and Lamp Hooks, both types of Telescope, Clock, Chrono Compass, a navigation manual and boxes of firewood. Lastly, maps of all three regions and of the world.
  • Cheese, singly and by the crate.
  • WIne by the barrel and the bottle, Rum by the barrel, Honey Beer by the bottle. Brown and Black tobacco and pipes to smoke it in if you are that foolish.
  • Raw Lamb steaks and Pork both single steaks and crates, Sausages singly and by the crate and crates of North Fish.

Right down near the end of the dock just before the shipyard is an art gallery selling paintings.

Sightseeing
No countryside here the island being one, or rather two, big rocks but you can climb up and view the castle, the houses of the rich on the mountainside and enjoy magnificent views of the other islands from the peak.

Mount Malefic

An attractive island dominated by an extinct (hopefully) volcano.

The Harbour

Malefic Harbour is in a nice wide bay on the northwest side of the island with the quay towards the eastern end. There is a bit of a sandbank on the western end of the quay but it's no hazard unless you are really careless.

The Market

The market is in the village, follow the path at the western end of the quay alongside the field of corn.
  • Bulk Beer,Water,Cheese and Grain, (lots of
    grain!).
  • Bread,Buns,Honey Beer by the bottle,
  • A food stall selling uncooked Pork and
Sausages and also Cheese and sausages by
    the case.

Sightseeing

An attractive island with fields of corn and some trees. You could, if you feel up to the effort, climb Mount Malefic and look into the crater, it's quite dead.

Siren Song

The Harbour

Distinctive from a distance Siren Song has a pleasant harbour on the south of the island protected by several large rocks. There are approaches from all directions except north. Easiest entries or from south or west,

Most probably you will be approaching from Fort Aestrin or from Eastwind. From the south the approach is more or less direct just head a little east of the big rock to find the wide entrance.

Coming from Eastwind you need to head to the southwest of the island in then turn northeast into the bay,

There is also a way in from the eastern side but it's not easy and there are no obvious reasons to use it.

If you want to try it then approach the island from the north east. You will see this passage between the rocks.

Make your heading south south west and aim between the rock to port and the sandbank to starboard.

As your bow starts to pass the sandbank turn towards the south to head into the bay (don't leave turn the turn too late!). The dock will be off the starboard bow,

The Market

There are two stalls on the dockside near the harbour office and three more in the village square at the east end of the dock .

  • Fish Hooks,Rods,Compass,Quadrant,Local Map,Brooms,Mugs with handles and Lanterns of the best type.
  • North Fish and Cheese in bulk, water in barrels.
  • Food stall selling raw fish (Blackfin Hunters, Trout, North Fish) and cooked Trout and North Fish.
  • Wine by the barrel and bottle, loose cheese, black tobacco and pipes
  • Bread, cooked pork and sausages.

    Sightseeing

Not a lot to see here. It's a pretty enough town/village but after that it's basically still just a big rock.

Sunspire

You can see why it's called "Sunspire"! Actually the larger island just visible to the right in that picture is the main island.

The Harbour

Not a lot to say really. The harbour is on the south side of the main island and can be approached from any direction from south south west round to south south east. It's easy and has no hazards.

The dock is towards the east side of the bay (not really a bay).

The Market

There is one stall on the dock beside the harbour office, it sells:
  • Firewood, water by the barrel, Lamb and cheese by the crate (only a single crate of Lamb when I was there.

The rest of the market is in the village, if such a name can be applied to six houses. There you will find...

  • Bread, Sausages and Cheese.
  • Wine and honey beer by the bottle and by the barrel
  • Raw fish (Trout and Sunspot) sold singly.
  • Three types of telescopes (extra powerful
    one for 12000)

I worry about the telescope seller, he seems entirely too fond of his wares. I caught him caressing his telescope.

Sightseeing

Limited I'm afraid. There is The Sun Spire of course and as usual you can climb the mountains (difficult climb this one) or you might fancy a dip in the beautiful limpid pool to the west of the village, good for a bit of snorkelling.

Happy Bay

Happy Bay, the sight we all long for after days at sea!

The Harbour

The harbour is on the southeast side of the island and dock lies more or less southwest-northeast. Entries are wide from the east, or west though from the west there are marked shallows on the port side all the way to the dock. Coming from the east is probably a little easier in the dark as there are no hazards apart from the other large and visible islands.

Happy Bat seen from the north (actually, nor' nor' east).

The shallows are well marked.

Seen from the south.

Coming in from the southwest.

The Market

Just three stalls here.

  • Uncooked Sunspot, Salmon, Trout.
  • Bread, Buns, Cheese, Bananas.
  • Barrels of Rum, Wine and Water, Bottles of Rice Beer and Wine, uncooked Sausages and Pork.
