A Guide to the Ports of The Emerald Archipelago
By TheOriginalMark:-)
It is hard enough as a new sailor to find the island they are looking for without having to search for the port when finally get there. This guide sets out to describe the locations of all the harbours of Sailwind and warn of the navigational hazards you should avoid on entering them. Its also gives details of what is available in the markets of each port.

Occasionally there is a little sightseeing information as well!

I was originally planning this as one guide covering all of Sailwind's ports but Steam did not like the size of it so now it is broken down into three guides by region.

A Guide to the ports of Al`Ankh.
A Guide to the ports of Aestrin.
A Guide to the ports of the Emerald Archipelago.

Please fell free to leave your comments, suggestions or corrections (of which I'm sure there are many). This is my first time creating a guide so try not to be too cruel :-)

Crab Beach

The Harbour

Is on the north side and at the western end of this very long island. Easy approaches from anywhere on the north half of the compass though if coming from the east or northeast be aware of the long curving beach that gives the island its name, you need to keep northwards as the beach extends well out to the northeast.

The Easterly Approach

Approaching from the northeast, Dragon Cliffs in view to port.

Watch out for the long beach especially at night,

The Westerly Approach

Crab Beach as seen from due west.

The Market

  • Raw Tuna and Salmon, cooked Salmon fillets.
  • Water by the bottle and the barrel, crates of Salmon and Tuna
  • Wooden mugs with handles, Compass, Lanterns and hooks, brooms, fishing rods, fish hooks, firewood.
  • Crab cakes (that's all he sells!)

Sightseeing

Well, you can take a walk on the beach to see if you can actually find a crab (I didn't). Its a long walk.

Dragon Cliffs

The main island is buried in a lagoon surrounded by rocky cliffs and massive spires of rock sticking up from the water, all of which make navigating your way to the harbour difficult. In addition the narrowness of the channels leads to some pretty turbulent waters. The actual dock is curved around the east and north sides of the island. This is where you will find the Junk for sale for 14500.

The Harbour

There are two routes into the harbour. The first and most straightforward is the northern passage, entered from the north side of island through a man made archway,

Head due south through the arch and when you approach the rock in the middle turn to port.

Keep to the port nearer the cliff than the rock as there are some rocks underwater to starboard. Don't try to go round the starboard side of the rock as there are some nasty submerged rocks there too.

The second route is the East Passage on the eastern side of the island.

Entry is through a narrow gap in the cliffs. At the end of the channel you need a sharp starboard turn to the north.

Once into the channel there are two large rock spires ahead. Depending on the wind you can either
turn starboard before the first or you can go on past it, under the arch of the second spire and then turn back easterly before making a turn to port into the north channel towards the dock. This option can be useful if the winds are unfavourable as there is decent room to tack and mostly the water is deep right up to the cliff face so if you are tacking you can leave it quite late.

Once in the north channel there is a slight turn to port when you sight the dock.

Here is an aerial photograph of the east passage, it should help show the route. East is to the top.

The Market

I wish I could tell you where all the market stalls are but they are dotted around all over the place so you'll just have to search them out,

  • On the dock (south): Brown and Black Tobacco and wooden pipes.
  • Roast Pork, Bananas, Buns, bottled water, beer, rice beer and coconut wine.
  • Cooked Salmon and Blue Shimmertail, raw Salmon Fillets, Crab Cakes.
  • Goats Cheese Singles, and Coconut Wine (Bottled).
  • Yellow,Red and green lamps and hooks,Broom, Fishing Rods, Hooks, Wooden Mugs, Firewood.
  • Three types of table, simple shelves, round stoves, simple bed, chair (stool).
  • World map and all regional Maps, boxed Clock (ornate) 2 types of telescope, Chrono Compass, Compass, Sun Compass, Chiplog, Quadrant, Navigation Manual.
  • Bottles of: Rice Beer, Coconut Wine, Water. Barrels of Rum.
  • Water Barrels (right down at the north end of the dock.
  • Somewhere behind where the water seller is - Raw Shimmertail, Tuna, Salmon, Eel. Blackfin Hunters. Bulk Salmon, Eel and Tuna.
  • At the back of the settlement beyond the shipyard is a stall selling Wind chimes.

If there is an art gallery in the town I have yet to find it.

Sightseeing

The town is quite attractive and worth a wander around and if you have the time and energy you can climb the hills and see some spectacular scenery but it is quite a climb. Not sure how the residents of the hill top communities get up and down but once up there you can use the scary wooden bridges to cross (unless you suffer from vertigo).

New Port

The Harbour

The Harbour is in on the north side of the island towards the eastern end and is at the opening to a narrow channel that runs more or less east-west (with some small zigzags) between the main island and and a smaller one to the north.

Approaching from the south you can either go round the island to the west or the east depending on the winds. If you go to the west you then also have the choice of entering the port via the narrow channel between islands or continuing round the main island eastwards to enter the port from the northwest. Taking the eastern rout is easier and quicker. Given the prevailing ortherly, northeasterly or northwesterly winds all options have their problems. The best thing is to make your choice early so that you can aim for one side or the other when you are still a good distance away.

New Port as seen from the south.

Approaching from the northwest. The harbour is ahead just beyond the smaller island in the foreground.

The Market

Stalls are dotted around. There are only 4 stalls. I'll start at the east end of the dock, up an alleyway.

  • Raw salmon fillets and Temple fish.
  • Tea and Brown and Black Tobacco
  • Lamp Hooks, yellow Lanterns, Compass, World Map, Broom, Fish Hooks, Firewood.
  • Opposite the harbour office - Water barrels and bottles, cases of Salmon.

Sightseeing

Apart from the village itself, none. Another boring rock.

Sage Hills

Attractive Islands mostly covered in Tea plantations. The harbour is between the two islands in a channel that more or less north-south.

The Harbour

Not a lot needs saying about the harbour, it's an easy place to dock. Just aim for the gap between the two islands and as you approach you will see the entrance to the channel. The channel runs slightly west of south (or east of north if winds force you into approaching from the south).

It's a short channel and the dock is halfway down so get the sails well reefed before you enter the channel. Only other thing really to be aware of is that the dock has a slight zigzag in it. Life is easier if you tie up to the outermost part (that is the southern most part).

The Market

Only three stalls here, well, one stall a shed and a restaurant actually.

  • A Stall next to the harbour office sells Water Barrels, Green Lanterns and hooks, Fishing hooks (singly), Firewood (Singly), a broom and (Ugh) Wind Chimes.
  • In a building at the southern end of the dock you can buy crates of Tea to trade elsewhere.
  • Up the steps behind the dock is a Restaurant selling cooked Sunfish and Salmon, Buns, Crab Cakes, Bottled Water and Rice Beer plus a barrel of beer.
  • I'm told that there is a Tobacco Merchant on top of the other uninhabited island (I've not been there since that update).

Sightseeing

A pretty tittle island for a stroll around, mostly covered in Tea Plantations. Nothing spectacular to
see though there are lovely sunsets when (if) the weather is fine.

Serpent Isle

Not much to say about Serpent Isle, quite a nice harbour, a few houses, a lot of rock and a dozen trees. Two islands actually, one to the south west and the other, the actual Serpent Island, the northeast one of the pair.

The Harbour

Pretty easy, big bay on the southwest side of the island with a wide entrance from the south and a pair of rocks guarding narrow entrances from the northeast and the southwest. No particular reason to use those two entrances unless you absolutely want to.

Serpent Isle from the southeast, ignore the island on the left,

Straight in from the southwest. There is a sandbar on each side, not really a danger but be aware of them if you are coming in at night.

Serpent Isle from the northeast.

Approaching the northeast passage.

The Market

The market, such as it is, is on the beach to the east of the dock.
  • A stall selling cases of Sunspot Fish, Seafood and Bananas.
  • A stall selling Bottled Water, Rice Beer, and singly, Sunfish (uncooked) and bananas.

That's your the lot, if you want cooked food you are out of luck here!

Sightseeing

Forget it, its a boring rock with a few houses. Well ok, a nice beach I suppose.

Sanctuary

The Harbour

The tiny harbour is on the north side of this tiny island. It looks like an easy place to dock but there is one big problem. The tiny dock has very shallow water especially a few meters beyond its western end. This is really not a place for the bigger boats.

Whatever boat you use you really want to come in from the west at as sharp an angle to the dock as you can and even then, in a big boat, you will almost certainly scrape the bottom as you dock.

If you come in from the east of course it's easy to dock but leaving presents a real problem. All you can do is lock the wheel hard to starboard and manually push the bows round as far as possible (and then hope for the best).

The Market

Only two stalls....

  • Water by the bottle, Energy Elixir.
  • Raw Salmon and Tuna.

But i believe there are some new islands not covered in the guide.

Looks good to me. As there is bulk trading now from each trader office, I do not need the shop information (which may or may not be outdated). I care only about geography and the information on where the harbor is located on each island, best approach directions, sandbanks to watch out for etc. & that all still applies and saves a lot of time and discovery effort.

@murdockwan Thank's. It's a bit out of date I suspect, I've not played Sailwind for a while.

@Dynamiez Thanks for reminding me, I decided it was actually yellow lanterns in bad light! Forgot to correct it :-)

Hi. Is there a differences between the "clear" lantern and the yellow lantern?
