Without spoilers, it's fair to say that it's a game of discovery, but here's how to discover without getting TOO frustrated.

Starter tips
They recommend playing this game with a controller. This can get a little frustrating, but stick with it, it falls into place and adds to the authenticity and experience!

  • For fast fast forwarding and rewinding, however, you'll get better control with your arrow keys on your keyboard - tap forward twice to speed up a playback, for example, or back twice to go backwards at double speed. The controller is not always consistent. As user Netstranger points out in the comments below, keyboard shift-arrow will give you frame by frame control.
  • "Image mode", where you select the hotspot to click on for your match cuts, appears to be a bit of a mystery at first. It's NOT. Here's a tip - the majority of the match cuts appear to be by shot/object CATEGORY, e.g. "Chair." If you click on a chair, it'll take you to another shot of a "randomly assigned" chair (I suspect that they are not that random).
  • In Image mode, if you hit LT, you can pick a picture icon (top left corner of screen). This will give little subtitles to each found shot where it TELLS YOU WHAT THE CATEGORY WAS for the hotspot selected shots. Very handy.
  • The tip that I would have killed to know earlier: in "image mode", when the film is frozen and you're trying to find hotspots to click on, if you USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT arrows on your 4 way controller, it will JUMP between the available hotspots. This very greatly speeds up selection. Like, a LOT. I found this at hour 10 of my playthrough and it made me grumpy that I hadn't seen it earlier.
  • If you have a haptic controller, you're going to get a haptic cue at times. Pay attention to it.
  • After a while playing, you'll begin to notice a white glow around clips that you may need to pay additional attention to.
  • Turn your sound up. Listen for unusual sound cues during scenes. Use the tools at your disposal to explore when you hear them. Yes, I AM being deliberately vague.

(very late comment) To do frame-by-frame control on a controller, lightly and partially use the trigger buttons instead of pulling them all the way, do it multiple times to gradually go faster or slower

I accidentally found some of the hidden scenes, but even after very carefully rewatching the scene in which I found them, I never noticed any "unusual sound cues".The sound was just normal talking or silence.

As mentioned below, pressing shift+arrows on a clip plays it even more slowly. Learning that this can be important really opened the game up for me after 6-7 hours of play.

If you have a controller (which is the definitive way to play this game) it will vibrate when near "ominous" stuff. The buzzing will give you which clip, where

Something I also noticed: the film reel will start giving a white glow if it has unviewed secrets.

So, here's a tip if you (like me) missed the shift+arrows tip like @netstranger, causing you to miss some of the secret scenes :
To find these, listen closely on the clip selection screen, you will hear a simliar-ish noise that you heard while playing the scene itself, it will increase the closer you get to a clip that has a secret scene that you missed.

The joysticks will often switch directions based on if you're watching normal footage or not. Using the d-pad to find secret footage worked way better than using joysticks. Also, reading the 'about' message helped me.

The thing I with I knew sooner is that using shift+arrows, or gentle mouse drags, you can actually switch to the secret scenes, and not see them overlapped with the main ones

I too wish I'd known about the hotspot feature sooner... Great tip!

Wanted to add that on keyboard, holding 'Shift' while using the arrow keys makes smaller speed increments possible according to the tutorial hints. But...pressing 'A' and 'D' for left and right instead of the arrow keys [something not mentioned in the game controls] also seems to do this. Tapping these keys you can fine tune the play speed without having to hold two keys.
