"At the age of 17 he was drafted into the austrian army and fought against the italian army in the Dolomites.
A grenade shrapnel shredded his leg. In the hospital they wanted to amputate it, but he refused.
The leg was saved, but he was never able to walk properly again.
Throughout his life he needed a walking stick because his right leg was stiff.

But that didn't stop him from living his life. He had modified a bicycle so that he could ride it with one leg.
After the war he opened a cinema and married my great-great-grandmother and had 2 children.

Unfortunately, his wife died early of tuberculosis. After a few years he married a second time and adopted his new wife's child.

During World War II he lived in Slovenia, which was once part of Austria-Hungary.
When the Italians marched in, his situation worsened.
The Italians were paranoid about the partisan issue. Anyone could be arrested and deported for no reason.

My great-great-grandfather Franc his brother and his two children were arrested and sent to the Italian concentration camp in Gonars.
Until the end of the war they had to try to survive under the worst circumstances.

The fact that he once fought on the Austrian side against the Italians was not an advantage in this situation.

All 4 also survived the 2nd World War.

Here you can read the full story with pictures.

That is great! It would be very nice if you finally would find it.
Please load it up if you find it. I would realy like to see the picture.

Also thank you very much for the website tip!

I could find him and his brother "Johann".
Franc was wounded in 03.01.1917 and Johann was wounded in 29.03.1915.

It also seems that he had another relative which was also in the war.
He is called "Josef". He was captured by the Italians in 23.23.1915.

The surname is quite rare and only 3 people appear under my family surname.

I'm back with something new. My Czech friend Samwe send me a list of IWW victims from Austrian index and I found there my great grand father Anton which fought on Alpine Front in IR 31 and he was taken to captivity 8th May 1917 to Sulmona. Probably was in Campo 78. Still haven't picture, but is a chance. My older cousin said, that in great grand mother living room always stand a big picture of Anton in uniform. We'll must find this photo in family. Anyway here is link to search of Verlustlisten Österreich-Ungarn 1. WK. Maybe you can find your grand fathers? Link is safe, I promise for my 18 years old stage in Steam. http://des.genealogy.net/ou1wk/search/index For me last name was enough, cos I thought that name is other... Ofcourse on this service is many other lists (mainly germans), maybe helpfull for you. :kuktrupp::alpen:

Feel free. Spam your Habsburgs era photos. :steamhappy: Unfortunately I haven't any photos of this great grandfather. In KuK Armee uniform I saw only my grandmother uncle, which came to Bielitz from Lemberg. :kuktrupp: I'm over 40 years old and I remember some 'Austrian atmosphere'. I found similar in Oscar movie, Czechoslovakian 'Obchod na korze'. In few moments I felt that what I felt when I was walking with my grandmother to her old dressmaker. He had then ca 90 years old. That was 80's, then time ran slower.

I am also in the fortunate position that as a child I collected old photo books of my family so that what is still available stays together.

I have also started to scan the pictures so that they will be preserved in the future.
It would be sad that they would be destroyed by fire or storm damage.

Also I can make a guide post in the days where I upload the of the photos from the ww1 era of my great-great-grandfather in an orderly way so that they are in context and don't fly around loosely in the artwork area.

So I don't spam the artwork area and others have the opportunity to share their pictures also there.

Thank you :)

Also thank you for telling your story.
It is sad that he passed away that early after the war.

Maybe you still have a picture of him.
You could also upload it here, so that he and his story are not forgotten.

Especially with games like this, I find the artwork-area exciting when the most diverse people share their family history in the form of pictures.

You have a different understanding of history in this way, because it's more personal.

Story for movie. :alpen: My great grandfather was from Galizien and fought on Italian front to. Don't know exactly where. He stay in Italy (I suppose as a POW) and die there shortly after the war. His wife, my great grandmother lived without him (a other man) some sixty years and she die two months before my birthday.
