Description
Update: As of June 14, 2025, I have rewritten the code of the mod to allow it to work with Medieval Kingdoms, Ancient Empires, Vanilla Attila, and most other small scale overhaul mods without the need for separate versions. This means that going forward, you will no longer need the other versions of my mod. Make sure you put it at the top of your load order for it to work properly. Please read the compatibility section of the description for more details.

As requested by many of you, this version of my Attila Ultimate Animations removes all secondary attacks, or heart-attacks from occurring in matched combat. For those of you who are unfamiliar with secondary attacks, they are the animations that play between two units that are not synced. These animations allow units to "gang up" on each other adding more balance and realism to battles. However, secondary attacks frequently result in units dying without playing a cinematic, matched combat animation. By removing secondary attacks from occurring, all kills and deaths in melee occur with a matched combat animation, thus making battles look more cinematic.

However, there are a few caveats to be aware of when using this version of the mod:

-Naval battles will be UNPLAYABLE due to the nature of this mod.

Unfortunately, the game prohibits matched combat on ships, and as far as I know, there is no workaround for this. Since naval units can only use secondary attacks when fighting, units boarding ships will stand around, awkwardly looking at each other. No killing will occur. However, once ships make landfall, matched combat works again. Missile and artillery ships are unaffected by this unless they are in melee.

-Battle balance may be impacted when using this mod

Based on my testing, battles are a little slower on average, which could be a positive or negative depending on your preferences. In addition, higher tier units are more powerful and take less casualties when fighting lower tier units. This is a result of melee combat being restricted to one on one engagements.

-Two handed spear, one handed sword, and falx units may have strange or out of place animations when fighting cavalry.

Two handed spear, one handed sword, and falx units currently use sword and shield as well as spear and shield animations when fighting cavalry. This is because CA never added any matched combat animations between cavalry units and two handed spear, sword, and falx units. This results in some animations looking strange.

Compatibility:
As for compatibly, this mod should be compatible with most other mods that don't mess with animations. It should also work with any overhaul that doesn't add completely new unit types that do not use vanilla presets (a dual wielding spear unit for example). I cannot guarantee compatibility for the overhaul mod that you choose, as I have only built in compatibility for Ancient Empires and Medieval Kingdoms, so proceed with caution. I may over time manually build in compatibility with as many overhaul mods as I can if I have the time to do it, however this process is time consuming and tedious.

@KaiserAxt I agree that 2 handed axe fights vs cavalry is boring, you can thank CA for that, as they never gave two or one handed sword/axe units any matched combat animations for fighting cavalry. I had to give them sword and shield kill and draw animations otherwise they would only use secondary attacks. As for your second point, this is actually untrue. All animations that exist in the game files do play, but I have adjusted duels to be shorter on average to maintain a front line, meaning some dueling animations are more rare now. It looks very goofy to me when a trained soldier who values his life penetrates deep into an enemy formation to kill an enemy soldier, only to die right after because he is surrounded. Also the "quitting mid fight" that you are referring is actually hard coded into the game. To my knowledge, when two units enter matched combat, the game predetermines an outcome and combines a set amount of attack/defend/counter animations to reach a kill or draw outcome.

I wanted to point out some things:
Axe vs Cavalry fights are boring due to Axe units just hitting them with blunt secondary or heart (idk) attacks and killing them instantly.
Some Sword VS Sword fighting animations are missing. (In particular those where they are going/walking forth and back while fighting)
I can't stand it when the units just quit the animation in the middle of the fight. IDK if this is even possible to fix
