Before starting, this is all the software we are gonna need:

With that out of the way, let's start with the quality of life improvements!

To change the FOV, we need to install a mod, not only to change our fov, but for removing the annoying bars from the top and the bottom, as seen on this picture.


To install the mod, you have to go to this page: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1494-call-of-juarez-aspect-fov-fix/

Click on the “download this file” button and click on “agree and download”, and download the file.


After you download the file, extract it, it will ask you for a password, the password is “pcgw”



After you extract it, you will see a few winrar archives…



We are only going to need “increased_FOV” and “Call_of_Juarez_BlackBars_fix”

Let's start with the fov

When you open the “increased_FOV” winrar, you will see a few FOV options



I recommend that you test the one that most suits you, be aware that putting a high value of FOV can result in seeing things that the developers did not intend you to see.

After you select your FOV, extract the two DLL files into your games main folder, and replace the two files, you can find your game directory if you go to your library, right click on the game → manage → browse local files.


To remove the black bars, go to the “Call_of_Juarez_blackbars_fix” folder and put the “data '' folder in your game directory.

This is how the game looks with a good FOV and the black bars disable.


As you can see, it really makes the game more immersive and lets you appreciate the visuals a lot more.


To enjoy this game's graphics at its fullest, you have to play on directx 10, since it lets you get improved graphics and it will make the game look a lot prettier.

To do this, when you enter the game, you have to select the “Run call of juarez - directx 10” every time you wish to play the game.


Also, this is how the game settings should look like if you are going to play the game at max settings:




If you have any problems with these settings, customize these settings until you see that it doesn't give you more problems.

(NOTE: if you want the directx 10 effects, you have to enable the “enhanced quality” option to see this effects)


The game only supports up to 100Hz, but you can put a custom refresh rate if you tweak a file.

Go to “%USERPROFILE%\Documents\call of juarez\out\save\”, and find the file called “video_DX10.scr” and open it with notepad ++

(NOTE: there are two files with the name “video” in this folder, one is for DX9 an the is for DX10, as far as i know, to make this fix work, you have to edit the one that you are gonna use, in this case, i used the DX10 because it's the version we are gonna use to play the game, but if you wanna use it for DX9, you have to apply this fix to “video.scr”)

Then, find the line called “MaxRefresh” (the one near the bottom of the file) and put your monitor's refresh rate in the parenthesis, like in this picture.


Then, click on file → save and close the file.

Now, you have a custom refresh rate!
