Playing Borderlands GOTY in [Insert Current Year]
By Chromatic Kiss
Borderlands GOTY feels borderline unplayable for most widescreen users thanks to its age, and knowledge on how to make it better isn't particularly common. Most guides are written using hacky methods, using keybinds to change the FOV on bootup, or binding your new FOV to all your movement functions. While these were sufficient back then, there are better methods today, and I would like to share them with you so everyone else can enjoy this game.

Step 1: Configuration
Configuration is just as important as the FOV, if your game looks like ♥♥♥♥ then it's just as headache inducing as if it looked great with improper FOV. Now would be a good time to boot the game up, generate your config files, and tweak the baseline settings to your desired effect. The main menu renders the actual gamespace, much like BL2 and BLTPS, so your FPS on the main menu should be indicative of your FPS ingame. Be sure to explore every option! Bind your keys, your video settings, and in the game options there is an aim assist option which is somewhat clunky, so if you aren't into that then turn it off!
Step 2: The Configuration Editor Program
Now that you've (hopefully) edited your initial configs, now is the time to go under the hood a little and start making real changes.
This section is dedicated entirely to the Borderlands Configuration Editor. This neat little program lets you modify settings you can't modify in-game, like the font size for stat cards or if volumetric fog should be used.

This tool can be downloaded here.[community.pcgamingwiki.com]

My configuration settings look like this:

Most of these are personal preference, and are entirely optional. You are not required to follow these settings exactly. HOWEVER IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE (IMPORTANT) THAT YOU DO NOT CHECK ANY OF THE FOV SETTINGS. These will be handled by a later tool and enabling FOV changes WILL cause weirdness.
Step 3: Widescreen .EXE
Hopefully you didn't change the FOV settings at all because now comes the part unique to this modern guide. The Borderlands Ultrawide and Multimon Hack is a modified .EXE (executable) file that physically modifies the game to display a proper FOV without using hacky config file edits. This means the FOV will ALWAYS properly display even on startup, and will not snap back to 70 FOV (game default) whenever you melee or enter a car, making for a marginally less disorienting experience. Additionally, it means that sprinting will also be less jarring as the multiplicative FOV modifier is toned down with this edit.

You can download the program here.[community.pcgamingwiki.com]
The 7z file is password protected and the password is: PCGW
Keep in mind it is CASE SENSITIVE so typing just "pcgw" will not work.

To install it, you will need to find the game's original executable! To do that, follow these instructions:

- Right click Borderlands GOTY in your steam library

- Click on properties.

- Click on local files.

- Click browse to local files.

- Open the Binaries folder.

- Drag and drop borderlands.exe into the folder, replace when asked.
Step 4: Enabling dialogue scrolling with the scroll wheel.
This one isn't tied to any downloadable programs, and is instead tied to your configuration files! To enable this you'll need to locate your WillowInput.ini file at C:\Users\[your computer profile name]\Documents\my games\borderlands\WillowGame\Config

Once there, right click WillowInput.ini and click on Edit.
This will open up Notepad, or Notepad++ if you're especially awesome. You'll want to find these lines and replace them:

InputKeyName="MouseScrollUp",ModifierKeyFlags=42

replace to

InputKeyName="MouseScrollUp"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

InputKeyName="MouseScrollDown",ModifierKeyFlags=42

replace to

InputKeyName="MouseScrollDown"

You will need to do the above two for every instance of such in the document.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(AliasName="ShiftUpPage",PlatformInputKeys[0]=(InputKeyData=(InputKeyName="PageUp"),ButtonFontMarkupString="PAGEUP"))

replace to

(AliasName="ShiftUpPage",PlatformInputKeys[0]=(InputKeyData=(InputKeyName="MouseScrollUp"),ButtonFontMarkupString="PAGEUP"))

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(AliasName="ShiftDownPage",PlatformInputKeys[0]=(InputKeyData=(InputKeyName="PageDown"),ButtonFontMarkupString="PAGEDOWN"))

replace to

(AliasName="ShiftDownPage",PlatformInputKeys[0]=(InputKeyData=(InputKeyName="MouseScrollDown"),ButtonFontMarkupString="PAGEDOWN"))

You will only need to do these two once.
Finale: Examples
That should be it! You're free to add mods or other changes based on whatever you feel is fit for your game, but my work here is done, as a last hoorah I just wanna post screenshots from the WSGF on the differences the Borderlands Ultrawide and Multimon Hack makes.

Questions are good, my guide isn't and will never be perfect. The widescreen hack actually does help with FOV using a method called "Hor+". Vanilla BL1 the FOV is always at 70, even on 16:9 resolutions. Hor+ means the game will autoscale the FOV based on your resolution, meaning a game that runs 90 FOV will have its FOV matched for 16:9 at 106.26 FOV, likewise for BL1's default 70 to (i think based on the calculations) 86.07. The effect is a perfect 1-1 scaling of the default FOV, so you'll get the same effect 70 FOV had for 4:3 resolutions on a 16:9 monitor, as the example screenshots showcase.

Some people prefer playing on higher FOVs despite that, which unfortunately I am limited in my knowledge there. However most people mod their FOV not because they enjoy high FOV but because they feel the default FOV is cramped, and it is because it's meant for 4:3, but most would usually settle on the Hor+ method provided they know about it.

Yea, theres no dedicated hex editor like there is for BL2 and the BLTPS so that kinda sucks.

Sorry about asking the questions, the guide didnt really elaborate on how its supposed to help with your FOV and that got me confused

Dialogue scrolling is scrolling through quest dialogue, in vanilla you're only ever able to do it using the page up/page down keys, the section is so you're able to do that with scrollwheel in exchange for using page up and page down.

For true FOV you could do it with hex editing as was how it was done with the WSGF .exe replacement, there's guides on how to do it within the WSG forums, but I'm not technically adept on it to guide you through that, but it's important to note it is possible. An easier method is to use the configuration editor to change it but that reintroduces the same problem.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help in regards to the FOV, but like I said looking on the WSG forums you'll find a hex-editing guide on how to replace it with your desired FOV.

Also, you never really explained how you change your FOV just using this guide. Widescreen hack does not include any FOV settings as far as I know, so how are you supposed to change it w/o binds or the old, super glitchy configuration editior?

What is dialogue scrolling?
