Purpose
This is meant to fix various texture issues (backgrounds, magic, etc.) and dialog speed back to the Dreamcast version. ...Or close to.
Reason?
After playing the game for so long, a lot of the issues started to become an eyesore. So, if the developers have no interest in fixing the easy stuff, then I'll just do it myself. You're welcome, GungHo (and Sickhead Games). :)
List of fixes:
Texture Related
  • Fixed UI border textures. Now both textures are shown.
  • Fixed the textures used when the characters use magic.
  • Fixed Roan's "Golden Hammer" textures not displaying properly.
  • Fixed Roan's "True Dragon Rise" texture.
  • Fixed Roan's "Vitality March" texture.
  • Partial fix for Mareg's "Beast King Blast" textures. Still mostly broken. Needs patched.
  • Fixed Valmar's Core "Destruction Light" texture.
  • Partially fixed the textures used when restoring SP. One move is fixed, the rest are still incorrectly assigned. MP restoration move(s) textures are all correct (thank the blade). HP restoration moves all have one texture incorrectly assigned.
  • Fixed textures used in the scene with Millenia and Valmar's Body.
  • Fixed textures used in the scene after arriving back from Valmar's Moon.
  • Fixed the dust textures used in Ryudo's Past on Grail Mountain.
  • Fixed multiple transparency issues with NPCs, enemies, and main characters. Endgame Elena and Aira are still broken. Needs patched.
  • Fixed background used in Grail Mountain.
  • Fixed background used in Valmar's Moon.
  • Fixed the end screen background.
  • Restored Melfice's "Demon Horde Slash" texture from the Anniversary Edition.

Dialog Related (En, De, Fr)
  • Various typo fixes...when possible. (English Only)
  • Partial animation fix in the scene where you first meet Millenia.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the opening scene where Ryudo talks to his client.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene with Ryudo and Skye when they "have another job".
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where Ryudo and Elena first meet.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where you first meet Roan.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene regarding Elena after you crash on the Granacliffs.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where you first meet Selene.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where you first meet Zera. Note: Timing of this scene has been slightly altered to match up with the music more. The music should start when the scene fades in, but instead starts when Ryudo spawns on the field. Needs patched.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where Tio awakens.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where you first meet Melfice.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where Roan gives his speech.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in one of the scenes regarding Ryudo's past.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene with Elena and Millenia after the final Melfice battle. Note: May need to be slowed down a little more in spots to completely match the Dreamcast version.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene where you meet Selene at Valmar's Body.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the final scene with Selene.
  • (All Languages) Fixed dialog text speed in the scene on Valmar's Moon after the boss battle. This corrects Ryudo's animation where he is hitting the barrier. (He actually stops when the sound effect ends now.)
  • Fixed the dialog desync in the Birthplace of Gods scene. (Japanese version is completely broken.)
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the "Ryudo's Awakening" scene.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene before you fight Valmar's Core.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene after the fight with Valmar's Core.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene after the fight with "Millenia".
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scene before the final boss battle.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the scenes after the final boss battle.
  • Fixed dialog text speed in the final scenes of the game. Note: The 24FPS lock hinders this fix. Need to find a way to restore it back to 30FPS.

Audio Related

  • Fixed/corrected the sound effect used for the gate when leaving Cyrum Kingdom by boat.
  • Fixed the Japanese audio to where it will be of the same quality as the English version...minus the voiced audio. Still cuts out early... Needs fixed/patched.

Here's a link that shows some of the fixes (and a preview for my upcoming upscale mod): https://imgur.com/a/JlegN5Z
Things I couldn't fix (but tried)
  • Textures/effects that fail to appear properly (or half render) in the game, but are (mostly) in the game files.
  • Geometry failing to fully load.
  • Bad UV mapping.
  • Ruined text spacing introduced in the "HD Remaster" version.
  • Broken/incorrect animations in important scenes.
Installation
Download the fixes from this link (remove the asterisks) : https://*www.*mediafire*.com*/file/*k9ky2wcxznkh3d3/*Grandia_2_Fixes.7z/*file

Unpack the files and move the "content" folder into your main game directory, let it replace the files, and you're done. There is also a folder named "original" which is used to restore the old files in case something goes wrong.
Optional, but recommended
This isn't required, but something I use to help mitigate some lingering issues this "remaster" brings.

Special K: https://wiki.special-k.info/en/SpecialK/Tools

Benefits
  • LAA patch. Helps lessen crashes with the port. Allows the HQ Music Mod to function properly and not randomly fail to play the tracks.
  • Allows you to hide the mouse cursor. ...Something the developers couldn't be bothered with.
  • Independent Flip. Generally can help with game performance.
  • Framerate limiter. I don't use it in this game, personally. But it is there.
  • HDR. Again, I don't use it. But a lot of people do.
  • Graphical mods. You can find mine here: https://www.nexusmods.com/grandia2hdremaster/mods/1

If you choose to use Special K, be sure to activate "Ignore Textures Without Mipmaps" in the menu and restart the game. This'll stop the game text from bugging out.

And that's after removing all the asterisks? If so...that's weird. It still works for me. But if you're having issues with the link then go to the nexus page and download the fixes from there in the "mirrors" section that uses google drive instead.

Just to let ya know that the link you provided for the fix now shows it as malicious and wont let me go to the website.

If by "slowed them back down to the original time wasting values" you mean "restored the game text back to how it was meant to function to avoid/fix bugs", then yes. But then no one is making you use this now are they? :)

when you say "fixed" text crawl speeds, dont you really mean "slowed them down back to the original time wasting values"?

I'm sure it is 100% possible. But it isn't something I've figured out yet. You're right, though. What you see now is the speed the videos were suppose to play at back then. I'm surprised you speeding up the video didn't affect it in-game...

Can I adjust the animation playback speed that comes out when I use the Manag skill?
In the 2000 Korean release (4CD) version, playback speed was very fast, but in the steam version, it was very slow.
Or I wonder if it's because it's the original speed of the game.

I tried to replace the video playback speed of Mana Egg technology in the data folder very quickly (x2.00) and encode it..
Output was still slow in real in-game.

God, years ago I had an old pirated copy way back for dreamcast when i'd try out random games to see if they peeked my curiosity, but due to cutscene/text desyncing I actually went to hunt down and bought the original on the dreamcast and it quickly became a good old favourite of mine- so when the whole anniversary/remaster came out on steam I was super excited to play it again, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw the SAME type of audio/text desyncing once more.... on an official version and with no sign of any update fixes. Super defeated me. So seeing this mod fix when I felt like booting up the game again (and seeing no official updates to the errors and bugs even after all this time) I thought... why the heck not and gave it a try- DOOD, 2 minutes into the game and seeing the cutscene in the church not be out of whack has made me so so happy- the game is truly back again! You have seriously done some blessed work here

Glad to see these fixes getting some use. I did just recently update this page with more fixes (now the file is the same as the one on nexus), but now the download is significantly bigger due to a lot of it having to do with the Japanese audio.
