Campaign and Activities Guide
By Revmatek
This guide serves as a basic starting point on how to play the game in campaign mode. All of this information also applies to sandbox mode in regard to activities.

Campaign mode can be selected from the main menu as a game mode when you create a save. The main difference between campaign and sandbox mode is that you have limited shells (currency) and must unlock parts and requirements to start activities which reward you with more shells.

Each part has a cost associated with it along with the mass and type of material used. In order to launch a vessel you must have all the parts and materials unlocked and be able to afford the cost of all the parts along with fuel.

Unlockables
When you start a new campaign, you start with a limited number of basic parts and materials.

Parts
In order to unlock more parts you must search various locations (islands) for unlockable parts hidden throughout the world. You may also find certain part blueprints for sale on various islands.

Materials
In order to unlock materials you must purchase them (using interaction-mode) from buy shacks which may or may not have a material available nearby. Better materials may be more expensive.

Blueprints
Some buy shacks will have blueprints for various parts you can purchase with shells. Once you drag them into your inventory it will unlock like a normal part found on the map. It will not take up an inventory slot but requires at least one slot be empty.

Map
The number of unlockables per island will appear on the map once the island is discovered. This count will include Parts, materials, and blueprints.
Runway
In campaign the runway is not automatically unlocked and must be purchased. Purchasing the runway will also include some basic plane parts. Parts you unlock for aircrafts will not be accessible until you unlock the runway.

Vessel Recovery
In campaign mode vessels cost shells and the vessel in question must be nearby the location it was launched in order to get a refund for the parts used and salvage the vessel. You can still salvage a vessel that is lost at the bottom of the ocean, but you will not get shells back for the cost of the vessel (minus fuel). If your vessel is damaged or parts have been destroyed you will receive less shells for the refund based on what was damaged.

In order to recover a boat, you must sail it back to a drydock (or at least nearby). 🛥️
In order to recover an aircraft you must land it back on a runway (or crash it nearby). ✈️

Note: Mobile build areas will also count as recovery locations.

Note: There is an optional misc. setting to prompt for confirmation any time you salvage.
Nautikin Recovery
When you hire a Nautikin you pay a fee for their services (1000 shells). Recalling a vessel will generally ignore this fee unless you recall your vessel without returning the Nautikin. This allows you to test out your boat designs without a bunch of fees for hiring crew members.

When you recall a Nautikin their inventory will be refunded and destroyed. Anything you wish to keep should be removed prior. A Nautikin can be recovered as long as they are near a build area of any type. If they are in the middle of nowhere you can still cleanup the Nautikin, but you will receive a confirmation prior to doing so because your inventory will be destroyed and not refunded.

Note: There is an optional misc. setting to prompt for confirmation any time you recall.
Activities
Activities can be accessed from the warehouse on the dock. Currently starting these activities is the responsibility of the host of the game. Clients cannot start or abort activities.

You can also access activities at any time from the map using this button:

See further sections for information on different activities.
Activities ─ Deliveries
Deliveries are point "A" to point "B" deliveries which consist of either delivering a number of crates or shipping containers.

Setup trade routes
In order to setup a delivery route you must first reach the location and establish a trade route by right clicking on a buy shack with interaction mode:

Note: Portus does not require a trade route to be established.

Once you establish a trade route, you must wait a bit for the trade route to start posting delivery requests.
Source and destination
Aka point A and B, source (marked in yellow) is the location where the containers will spawn and where you need to load the containers onto your vessel. This location is not specifically marked, but rather indicated by a number of yellow HUD markers tied to the containers that need to be delivered.
If a container is lost at sea the marker will move to indicate its location.
The destination (marked in green) is the location where the containers need to be delivered.

Markers also appear on the map and will list your current distance from them in Nautical Miles (NM)

Note: Not all locations have a crane, plan accordingly.
Securing containers
Containers can rest on the deck of a ship, but this may not always be physically safe (especially at high speeds) and you wouldn't want to lose them at sea without a crane. Accordingly, containers can be secured (using interaction-mode) to the deck of a ship in order to assure a safe journey and unsecured on arrival.
Containers can also be stacked
Note: stacking containers will affect the center of mass of your vessel based on the mass of the container.

Using cranes
Cranes are covered in detail in another guide. But for the purposes of deliveries, cranes are used to load and unload crates and shipping containers. The cranes have 2 types of lifts which you can switch between using the [X] key (see controls for platform). Far enough along, delivering containers to locations without cranes may require a large boat with a crane mounted on the deck.

Difficulty
The difficulty of a delivery is determined by a few factors:
  • The type of container (e.g. crate vs shipping container where crates are easier due to size)
  • The distance from point a to point b
  • The number of containers that need to be delivered
The reward for the mission is directly tied to the difficulty and number of containers. If for any reason the delivery cannot be completed or otherwise desired you can abort the delivery at any time without a penalty (except for any fuel you may have used).
Activities ─ Treasure Hunts
Treasure hunts involve hunting for treasure at islands that have been previously discovered. The reward for the treasure will be based on the size of the search area with larger areas being worth more. The physical size of the treasure will be based on the reward. Treasure may be on land or underwater anywhere within the search area.

In order to recover the treasure you simply need to grab it with a Nautikin. Once recovered the activity will be complete.

Difficulty
  • The size of the search area
Activities ─ Rescue
Rescues can occur in a couple of different ways,
  • Rescuing overboard Worker Nautikins
  • Putting out fires
  • All of the above

Indicators
  • Green, the port where rescued Nautikins need to be transported.
  • Yellow, Worker Nautikins to rescue.
  • Red, fires to put out
In order to put out a fire you need either a vessel with a fire monitor part or a Nautikin with a fire extinguisher item.

Workers Nautikins
Worker Nautikins are Nautikins who work for your parent company, but they are not always competent and may need rescuing.
If a worker is incapacitated, you will need to revive them with a medkit before you can complete the activity. Once they are shipshape you can rescue them with interaction mode.
Rescued Workers can be controlled the same as your Nautikins, however they will disappear when the activity is completed (but you can steal their items if you want!).

In order to complete the rescue you must put out all fires and return all Nautikins to their desired port.
Difficulty
  • The number of Workers to rescue
  • The distance from the port
  • Whether or not you need to put out a fire
Activities ─ Monster Hunt
Monster hunts involve traveling the ocean in search of a dangerous sea monster of some sort. Similar to a treasure hunt, you are given a search area and must locate the monster.
Giant Turtle
The giant turtle is an elusive and gigantic sea creature. These turtles are aggressive towards vessels and will attempt to sink anything they see in a misguided attempt to protect their territory from a competing turtle (which is actually your vessel). You can choose to attack them from the sea or air, but beware of their extremely dense shells. If you are not interested in harming the turtle you can observe them with your vessels from a far and swim up close with a Nautikin. Giant turtles will attack Nautikins if they feel threatened, but are otherwise peaceful unless their territory is threatened.
Difficulty
  • The size of the search area
Activities ─ Seek and Destroy
Seek and destroy involves building vessels with weapons to take out pirates! Pirates will appear in various sizes and threat levels. You will have to search for them so plan accordingly for they will manically try to sink you!
Pirate Weapons
Pirates have a range of weapons depending on the threat level and may include the following:
  • Deck guns
  • Deck cannons
  • Missile Launchers
  • Torpedo Launchers
Pirate Treasure
All pirates like treasure! Your goal is to destroy the pirate base or vessel but you can also steal their treasure if they have any, which may be worth a little extra in campaign for the risk involved.
Note: Pirate treasure will sometimes have part blueprints. That means you must raid the pirate ships if you aim to collect all the parts.
Pirate Health
The pirate health bar which will become active when selecting the activity will non-intuitively show a cumulative sum of both the current pirate vessel(s) hull integrity and the health of any pirates on board. The health bar may be more affected by attacks if said attack kills a pirate or seriously damages a vessels hull, otherwise it may appear more incremental, but this is intended vs having separate health bars for each threat.

Pirate Disguise
If you manage to get yourself a pirate outfit, the pirates will think you one of the crew. Be warned though, any suspicious behavior such as pulling out a weapon or operating something you shouldn't will likely result in combat.
Capturing pirate vessels
If you eliminate the entire crew of a pirate ship and take control of it, it will then become yours to use as a normal vessel. You can complete the activity by stealing all of their ships. If a pirate ship has no driver outside the seek area, it will self-destruct, so you must capture it inside the area.

Capturable pirate vessels will appear white on the map (when they have no driver). Once you take over a pirate ship (enter the driver seat), even if you have not killed all of the crew, you will be able to use other seats to observe the vessel. You cannot capture pirate bases or vessels where you are incapable on entering the driver seat.

Difficulty
  • The size of the search area
  • The type of the pirate vessel

Threats
See below "Threats ─ " sections. These are separated because the Steam guide seems to not generate links with more than 10 links per section.
Golden shells
In the event you sink all your ships as any good captain would, you may be out of shells. In this scenario you can salvage your operation by hunting for golden shells on various islands. Golden shells are valuable goodies that spawn automatically at random locations (land and underwater) that can be sold at the buy shacks for an infusion of shells to get you back on your fins.

It may be easier to stumble across them when you are not in need, but they are out there! These will only spawn in campaign. You can also collect and sell these even if you don't need the shells.
Hunting
Sharks
Sharks can be hunted for meat which can be found in their inventory and sold at buy shacks, occasionally they will have eaten a golden shell as well.

You can also hunt other sea creatures for meat like Giant Turtles or Whales 😱. Large sea creatures will likely not be cost effective if you are low on shells though. Giant turtles for example have meat that you can harvest as a bonus to completing the monster hunt activity, but this may be dangerous if sharks are nearby and require a lot of fuel and weapons to defeat.
Fishing
Fish can be found in great numbers near islands and in groups out in the ocean. Some fish can only be found in certain locations and each type of fish is worth a different amount of fish meat.

Catching fish with a Nautikin
You can swim up to fish and the fish will not be alarmed by their fellow sea creature. Right-clicking with interaction mode will give you the option to catch the fish. You can also quickly catch a fish using left-click. Once you catch a fish, the remaining fish in the group will perceive you as a predator and will flee, which will make them harder to catch. They will calm down if you return later. Fish will re-populate when you are not around.
All caught fish result in the same type of fish meat but result in different amounts. Eating fish meat will restore a small amount of health but cannot be used to revive Nautikins. You can also kill fish with the harpoon launcher. Fish meat spawned from killing fish with harpoons will not be saved and de-spawn after a while if not picked up.

Multiplayer note: Catching fish with a Nautikin is client side, because fish movements are not synchronized in multiplayer due to the extreme amount of fish (saves a lot of time/network messages). Though this will likely not be noticeable unless 2 players are fishing in the same location and discuss the fish they are fishing. In any case, when you catch a fish you receive a fish regardless of if other players are catching the "same" fish in a similar location. Groups of fish are synchronized to the point where they will be nearby relative to other clients.

Note: When fish are not loaded in an area you will not be able to catch them. This means that if you leave a fishing boat running and then leave the area the fish will be unloaded and you will not be catching fish. Similarly, if you have the fish turned off in the settings when you are above water or otherwise you will also not be able to catch fish.

Fish container
Fish containers can hold any type of fish-like meat (i.e. Fish, Shark, Turtle, Whale, etc.), but will not allow any other item type. This part is available in build mode and can be placed on any vessel. You can sell the fish container inventory when nearby buy shacks using interaction mode. You can also check how many slots are filled with interaction mode. Each fish container can hold 1200 kg of fish which will affect your vessels center of mass. You can put fishing parts on structures, but they will not do anything (except for passive fish storage). The fish container can be used without the fishing net.

Fishing net
Another part available in build mode is the fishing net. Catching fish with nets only requires the boat be moving and nearby fish. The fish do not have to go into the net physically. The orientation of the net relative to the fish does matter. The more/larger nets give you move coverage but will only increase the amount of fish to a certain point. The fishing net will not do anything without a fish container.
Note: Fishing nets do not have collisions for performance reasons / limitations of the physics engine.

Fishing indicators
When fishing in a ship with nets, you will see a UI fish indicator in the bottom right of the screen that will change colors based on the amount of fish the net is aligned with.
  • White - Some fish detected (small fish)
  • Blue - Many fish detected (medium and possibly smaller fish)
  • Green - Lots of fish detected (large and possibly smaller fish)
Tip: The slower you go without stopping the more fish you will get when you see an indicator.
Achievements
Steam achievements can currently only be unlocked in campaign mode. The reasoning behind this mostly being the ability to build any contraption to instantly unlock an otherwise noteworthy achievement.
