SS City of New York

Here is the SS City of New York (and her sister City of Paris) of the Inman Line.

These ships would be the last ships built for the Inman Line, and were built to be the largest and fastest liners of their time. They were the first liners built with 2 screw propellers. City of New York managed to capture the Blue Riband for fastest Eastbound crossing, but her sister City of Paris, which was faster, achieved both East and Westbound crossings. Their rivals, the Teutonic-Class of the White Star Line, captured the Blue Riband from the ships, but City of Paris managed to recapture it. In 1893, the Inman Line was merged into the American Line by the International Navigation Company, and the 2 ships, now renamed SS New York and SS Paris, were now US flagged ships and their port of registry was changed from Liverpool to Southampton. The 2 ships also saw service as troopships during the Spanish-American War, with City of New York and City of Paris being renamed to USS Harvard and USS Yale respectively. After the war they returned to passenger service, with Paris being renamed Philadelphia. New York gained her fame on April 10th, 1912, when she broke free from her berth in Southampton and nearly collided with the RMS Titanic, delaying Titanic's arrival in Cherbourg by a half hour. In 1917, after the United States entered WW1, the 2 ships were used as troopships once again, with New York being renamed USS Plattsburgh, and Philadelphia being renamed USS Harrisburg. After the war, both ships continued passenger service with the American Line until they were put up for sale in the 1920s. The Philadelphia was sold to the New York-Naples Steamship Company for Mediterranean service until she was beached and burned by her crew after a mutiny in 1922, her remains being scrapped the following year. New York served with 4 different companies before being scrapped in 1922.
