Getting Started in Unturned for Noobs
By jiminywinkle
*super outdated but some info might still help*

The sequel to the popular gmod guide "Getting started in TTT (and multiplayer in general) for Noobs"

Hai, this is jiminywinkle and this guide will teach the average noob how to survive in unturned, how to get the achievements, and how to set up a basic server for other friends to play on (using Hamachi)

This guide is really meant to be a noob's swissarmy knife when it comes to Unturned and really just to help people who are confused in this game, thanks for the astronomical numbers on my last guide!

I try to keep my guide updated so check it out every once in a while for new notes and sections

(no random friend requests, sorry)

What is Unturned?
Unturned:

Unturned is a game focused on fighting off zombies, exploring, and creating bases and other useful things in order to survive the zombie apocalypse.

(2.0) This game is played on PEI (Prince Edward Island), right off the coast of fabulous

This game can be very challenging at first but with enough practice and skill it can be very easy.
Stranded
Just imagine that you wake up on a deserted island with nothing but the clothes on your back and knowledge that the world as we know it is coming to an end.

K?

Now take out the clothes part

BOOM You sir/ma'am are up to speed!

(2.0)

Now you have to survive on this large, creepy, zombie-infested island with nothing but a chocolate bar, a juice box, a flashlight, and a half-ton of health bars to look after (if any go too far you die :)).

Survival 101:

First, go out into the wilderness, admire the amazing sce- wait... nvm, try to find some sort of village to get some stuff from. This is a map of the island and the loot drops that you might find on it

Don't pay attention to all of it, try to look at the main ones: civilian, police, and military. These are the main types of areas in the game, each area has a different level of loot drop, each one is guarded by a different type of zombie (see "Zombies!"). It would be best to kinda "set up shop" by one place that has many different loot drops, this is the time you should look at the other types of drops. Basically just try to find a town with a large variety of different items and tools, i personally built up on the mountain left of Charlottetown, but don't let that stop you from going somewhere else. I built it there because it has a lot of medical supplies, food, gas, cars, etc; one reason you might want to go somewhere else is beacause there are not that many weapons in this area. A good idea is to just get some weapons from a military base THEN settle down by a town
Zombies!
These are the main types of zombies that you will encounter on your journies (police and military are currently only found in 2.0):

Civilian zombie
Main description - This is the weakest type of zombie in the game, found in most, if not all places
Health - Basic
Clothing - anything other than the other zombies

Police zombie
Main description - Fairly tough zombie found in police stations, fire stations, and other select enviroments
Health - Average
Clothing - A blue police outfit, a stereotypical canadian militia outfit (or whateves it is), or a yellow-tan or black-red-yellow fireman outfit

Military zombie
Main description - Toughest basic zombie there is, found in military outposts and tents
Health - High
Clothing - Green or Tan military outfits

Mega zombie

Main description - Toughest zombie in the game, just added in 3.0, currently found in the alley on the dev test map
Health - OVER 9000!!!!!
Clothing - Shorts (now has distinctive skin color)

How to fight a zombie:

Try not to fight them head-on, try to move backward while swatting at the head. Get a melee weapon, the melee weapons are OP, you can slay armies with them. Try to stay away from guns if you are fighting zombies, the bullets are hard to find and they don't do much, stick with shooting other players.

There are also "crawlers" which are the same as normal zombies except they crawl, this is deadly because they can hit you easier and can't be hit as easily.

All zombies do 10 damage (2.0)
Cars
Cars are a very unique aspect of this game and are very fun to use but can be tricky at times. Cars can be refuled by gas cans, these can either be empty or full, each full one can give a car 25% gas (though some exceptions might be possible with bigger vehicles). Empty ones can be filled by going to a gas station and clicking a gas refuling station with the can. Cars have different amounts of health depending on their size and go from healthy, to smoking, to on fire before they blow up. If they tip over just use a car jack on it, works like magic.
Guns
The guns in Unturned are unique because of how hard they are to use, these are the steps to use one

1. Look at gun description to find what clip they take
2. Get the type of bullet that the specific clip needs and craft it with the clip to transfer the bullets
3. Use as normal

You can press 't' to look at the gun and change its modifications, if you have a compatible modification it will be listed on the part of the gun it gets put on to. To put it on the gun all you need to do is to click the modification and it gets put on the gun.
Bases
I would suggest staying away from this topic, it can get very tedious and annoying to get everything correct and in its proper place. If you are not on a multiplayer server pretend this aspect of the game does not exist, all you need to do is go somewhere zombies don't spawn and set up camp, a mountain would do very nicely. Stuff that you WILL need for this camp is: a generator and worklight (for lighting, just put them by each other and turn the generator on), a campfire (for added light and a place to cook food, just hold the food over it), a cot (you can choose this to add a "home" option when you die, if you choose this option you respawn at the cot if you claimed it) and a small farm (if you find a rotten vegtable don't eat it, craft it to get a seed, then just plant it and harvest it later). That is really all you need for this, if you really, REALLY want to make a camp knock yourself out with this crafting list i got off the internet, it is really basic but it should help.

P.S.
Some of these items need skill points in crafting to create (see "Skillz")

To build a base you need to have a platform down first, and to place walls you need to first place pillars on the corners of the platform.

Corrections -
the chest recipe needs 3 wooden crosses, not 2

Crafting
(2.0) Crafting is a very simple thing that you can use to create clothes, bases, items, and otehr useful things. This works by having a 4-box crafting tab that allows you to combine items to create things. How this works: There are two boxes on the top, these are to combine the items that you will use to craft. Note - There are crafting recipes that only require one item to craft like the moldy tomato, which can be crafted into a seed for planting. The item that comes out is on the bottom-right and you can get it after hitting the craft button. The bottom left box is the tool you use to craft the item, many, MANY crafting recipies don't even need a tool to create it but sometimes a crafting level is needed in skills. Note Note - If you don't have the correct crafting level the recipe won't even show up, so before you go checking the wikis for the recipe make sure you have the correct crafting level. Another good thing to know is that if you are close to a fire you can use that in your crafting recipe, it can be used in the place of a tool if you click its icon next to the tool icon.

(3.0) It appears that you just need the right materials and click on the item you want to make, fair enough.
Skillz
(2.0) I don't really want to spend too much time on this topic just beacuse it is so straightforward so here it is. Go into your inventory (TAB) and go your skill chart at the bottom of the window. Here you can spend experience to get skills in this tree, they help you get buffs for each activity, and each has a description of what it does. You can get experience from killing zombies, chopping trees, other manual labor stuff, etc.

NOTE:
Every time you die you loose HALF of your skills and your experience, this is really the main penalty of dying in this game
Food
Food is pretty straightforward, just use logic in this case when you are looking for something to eat or drink. Rotten foods, as i said, can be used as seeds for new plants, rotten drinks can be crafted with purification tablets to cleanse them. Berries can save your life but can sometimes cause the eater to become high, you have been warned. Each food gives different amounts of relief from starvation or dehydration depending on their real-life counterparts.
Meds
There are many medical items in the game, some give health and some reduce your "radiation meter". Radiation comes from poison clouds and sometimes just sorta... shows up. Be prepared, use bandages, rags, bloodbags, etc. to regain health, use lots of the other pills, shots, etc to keep the sickness meter down

Bleeding - This is what happens when you get caught in some sort of trap, this causes you to slowly loose health and most, if not all times, causes you to die. How to stop it? Get a medkit or some sort of bandage, rag, dressing, etc. to stop the blood flow.

The more advanced meds are found in medical tents, in pharmacies, and in military outposts, minor stuff like bandages can be found in most places.

Remember

IRL OVERUSE OF DRUGS IS NOT GOOD KIDS!
Meters
These are also pretty straightforward.

Health - ..........

Hunger - The higher it is the closer you are to starvation

Thirst - The higher it is the closer you are to dehydration

Sickness - The higher it is the closer you are to dying of disease

Stamina - The higher it is the better, means you can sprint, jump and use strong attacks. Sprint (SHIFT) wears it down, jump takes it down by 10, and strong hits (RMOUSE with compatible melee weapons) take it down by 10 as well.
"Dude, put some pants on"
To get clothing all you need to do is find some, pick it up, equip it, and put it on
Setting up a server
Ever wanted to create your own private server on Unturned where you and your friends can play?

WELL NOW YOU CAN!

Step 1 - Get LogMeIn Hamachi

Now you are probably thinking "greaaaaaat, now i go to this site and get a virus, thanks jim, thanks"

WRONG

This is a simple application that makes server creation as simple as watching saturday morning cartoons!

DIRECTIONS: (you AND your friends need to get this software btw)

1. Go to https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx
2. Download "Unmanaged" (i suggest this, but pick the one you think will be the best)
3. Download the software as normal (i would have given this more detail but i do not want to download this again, i already have it)

BAM, DONE

Step 2 - Use LogMeIn Hamachi

DIRECTIONS:

1. Go into Hamachi
2. Power on
3. Create a new network
4. Type in server info
5. Create Network
6. Open Unturned (LEAVING HAMACHI OPEN)
7. Host a server
8. Type in info (adjust accordingly but do not touch the port, that's the basic port)

Now it's your friends turn

1. Tell them to "join an existing network"
2. Tell them the info you typed in
3. Have them join the network
4. Have them open Unturned (LEAVING HAMACHI OPEN)
6. Have your friends connect to an existing server
7. Have your friends go back into Hamachi and right-click your username and click "Copy IPV4 Address", paste this into the IP slot
8. Have them type in the password
9. PLAY

(MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE GAME FIRST)
Achievements

Tips
Tip List -

1. Check item descriptions, they can be VERY useful, especially if it is a gun or mag

2. Always know where to get food and meds in case things go south real fast

3. Have a car ready with gas just in case you want to go somewhere or pick up a friend

4. Always pick up worklights, the more light in your base at night, the better

5. Eat berries, they can poison you but they can save your life if you are out of food

6. Try to have at least one of every tool (pick, axe, pocketknife, etc) for gathering and crafting

7. Try to get at least one good weapon (i suggest katana, it's fast and has a huge range)

8. Aim for the head when fighting zombies

9. Try to trust only people you know

10. Spend your experience, it can help a lot
Real Scenarios
(I add to this quite regularly)

Suggested by reader jeffreybaum2000 (thanks for the review!)

How to survive for more than two minutes -

First you spawn, you do not have many supplies, what do you do?

Good - Go out and find a town (military base if you're feeling ballsy)
Bad - Run around and admire the grass

You find a town, you see zombies, what do you do?

G - Try to avoid the zombie's field of range and get as many supplies as you can
B - Try to kill everything that's moving

You are running out of inventory space, what do you do?

G - If you are getting hungry/thirsty have some of the food to free up space, if consumable, drop something for a few seconds, use item, pick up item again
B - Drop useful items, leave them there and fill up inventory with crap

You are out of inventory space, what do you do?

G - Find a backpack, try to have only the stuff you NEED (flashlight, food, drink, and melee weapon)
B - Dump everything you have and come back for it later

You find a backpack, what do you do?

G - Use it and gain the inventory space
B - Don't pick it up, continue being the worst Unturned player ever

You have some weapons, food, and random supplies, what do you do?

G - Put the weapons in your top inventory slots so you can switch to them faster (using 1,2,3,4, and very rarely, 5)
B - Randomly place them around

You now are pretty decked, what do you do now?

G - Get a car and put some gas in it (check my section on cars), go around and create a camp
B - Go around and starve yourself to death

You want to settle, where should you go?

G - A place with varied loot drops and places that don't spawn too many zombies (check map)
B - A random field in the middle of nowhere

You have run out of space, again, what do you do?

G - Make chests and crates to store excess stuff
B - Make pillars and random walls and place them randomly

You meet a player with full gear and he is running at you with a katana. What do you do?

G - Run, your life expectancy just took a swan dive (if you have a good gun try to shoot him)
B - Try to kill him with your bare hands
*BONUS* How to get into the Unturned 3.0 beta
1. Go to your library

2. Right click Unturned

3. Click "properties"

4. Click "betas"

5. Type in "OPERATIONMAPLELEAF"

6. Switch versions (look above the text box)

7. Your welcome ;)

Btw, it saves your 2.0 profile (mine did anyway), so try out 3.0 without any risk! :D
The End
Thanks for reading, this is the end for now but i can add more on if there are new updates or you guys suggest new topics for me to cover. Also check out my other guide if you are new at gmod too (40th most popular guide EVER! i'm pretty sure, my math might be off)

THANKS!
