St John is the primary Ambulance service for most of New Zealand, other than the Wellington Region which is served by Wellington Free Ambulance. St John Ambulance is associated with the worldwide charity that provides first aid and medical care to 40 countries.

Patient Transfer Ambulances are used to shuttle patients between hospitals or medical centres without using an active ambulance, They are typically fitted with equipment for transport and have lights incase of emergency where they need to travel fast to the receiving hospital
